A look ‘behind-the-scenes’ with some of the graphics work from Bear and his studio Shadow Tor, who create the graphics, animations and interactive worlds for Time Team.

Bear works alongside production, with film shoots, researchers and archaeology site partnerships, all packing together information used for the digital reconstructions appearing on screen - the aim: to illustrate and highlight features discovered in the trenches and described in episodes, to help show the viewers what’s been lost to time.

At Cerne, we follow Bear’s adventures to several historical places, from the Abbey at Sherborne to the top of Abbots Lodge/Porch or 'wizards tower' as he called it, at Cerne Abbas. 3D capturing surviving and comparative remnants of the past, collecting texture references, drone captures and landscape mapping are all part of a mission to re-build the 'lost abbey'.

Whilst the team from diggers, archaeologists, scientists, directors and editors assemble the program and information, Bear's biggest challenge at Shadow Tor is to bring all that different information together to help tell the story.

This involves merging technology and artistry with photogrammetry, texture captures, reference scans, 3d modelling and the benifit of peeking into places very few get to see.

Appreciated the behind-the-scenes narration. A lovely walkabout and reconstruction. Thank you Bear!

Janie Waters

most excellent program. And Bear has .... bears! (I have four ...)

Charles Mason

Bear, I will add you to the invite for drop box on the images taken this summer. I will start processing several items soon to include some architectural stonework that I think was part of a window. Chuck

Very cool documentary, and I love the glimpse of what already exists of the digital reconstruction. One thing that surprised me a bit was the inner part of the reconstructed cloister being shown as a lawn. Was that the usual setup in English monasteries? At least here in Germany I would expect to find a garden for medical plants in this location if the soil in that place allowed it. Maybe testing soil samples from the cloister area for pollen and seeds could reveal if a garden was in place there.

Very interesting, thank you. Those delicate iron chairs on the roof of the tower were a surprise!

This subject is so interesting. The finished results are really top notch. As per my previous comment on the scanns. A master class with a more technical in depth session, where you can show the different steps from taking pictures of an item to the finished 3d scan, would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I’d love to help process some of the photogrammetry items if you need. As with all digs, and ongoing projects, there is so much more to learn and discover.

Matt Bear Clark

For now, until there is more information, I kept the internal area quite simple, but can imagine it could have contain herbs and medical plants beds, bee hives and work spaces.

Matt Bear Clark

I certainly could do - ask TT - I do teach those with live streams as masterclasses - archaeology teams and art students alike. I’ve done some for budding archaeologists in Australia for example, as well as guest lectures at uni, involving a range of media capturing methods, software, technology and more importantly… budget.

Wolfgang Zenker

For the low budget variant you could have a look at the OSM4HistoryBuffs YT channel. They had a video about two years ago showing the creation of a 3D model of a milestone using a mobile phone photogrammetry app.

Thanks, it makes sense to keep it simple in the absence of information. Let's see what we'll find out in the future; the nice thing about digital models is that they can be improved upon in light of new information without starting from scratch all over again.

Andreas Brunath

Amazing digital recreation of the abbey Thanks so much

Mark Lund

Hi, also Digventures have an online tutorial showing the basics of Photogrammetry. Ive been meaning to give it a go but it requires a fair amount of computer 'power' and my Mac is a bit tired and slow just now. I do love the look of 3D models.

Michael Sperry

Magnificent! And I envy you the opportunity to climb up that tower and look out from the roof. Amazing!

Gastromoped

...my mouth just fell open again & again of aaaaaaw & wooooooow! :o) Thank you!!

Lynn Marsh Freeman

Excellent work and a very welcome addition to our knowledge base regarding the lost abbey. Thank you!

Toria Grace

amazing! i'd love to learn how to do this! Going around exploring and photographing everything, down to the little details and then making accurate 3d models O: seriously seriouslly where should i start to get into this?! Maybe i should post this as a question in the chat xD

Doug Mackey

Fantastic! Bear is a treasure. My Patreon dollars put to great use.

Meg

Absolutely fantastic!!

Emily Spencer

Absolutely wonderful! Thank you! ❤️

Matt Bear Clark

I’d happily train up an army of photogrammetry experts - sort of like a Charlie’s Angles team for History and Heritage 🤔

Matt Bear Clark

I love my job. I’m very lucky to be able to help ‘bring to life’ on screen some of what has been lost to time. I’m just part of an amazing team - from those that dig these sites, research, film and the many who put programs together.

Matt Bear Clark

My little teddy bear Patsy, has been hidden in every reconstruction I’ve done 🧸

Janie Waters

I had best start paying closer attention. Bears rock. So do you. Thanks for being who you ARE 🧸

Tony

That is stunning, both technically and visually with a lovely empathetic presentation. Thank you

Toria Grace

omg that would be amazing! I bet there are loads of people out there dotted around the whole of the British isles that would be totally passionate about that! thank you for the reply!

Dinah Sanders

Has me thinking about the heritage vandalism problem and the potential to mobilize a Bear Force to do local documentation that can be used for future comparisons and address damage.
