Also in today's podcast you'll hear from Richard Osgood ahead of Time Team's return to the village of Cherington, where excavation of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery continues. You'll also meet some of the military veterans working on the site who are part of Operation Nightingale, an organisation which uses archaeology to help former and serving military personnel recover from psychological injuries. I have always wondered, is the face closest of the three in the logo modelled on Carenza Lewis? At least to my eye, I have always thought I have seen some resemblance there, but I might be imagining it.

Rhonda K Hageman

Well, that was fascinating! I had somehow always imagined that the three faces were representing Tony, Mick, and Phil… Apparently not!

DOOBAT

Got so caught up in the history of the logo, I nearly forgot to eat my porridge! :'D

Wessex-Wyvern

Oh that is such a great story! The logo has always reminded me of a coin or some kind of token.

Alan McMillan

I always was intrigued in the logo, now I know. Thank you!

Peter Gore

Could have been four but John was down the pub!

Robin Whitehead

Interesting story - I have always wondered about the logo's origins. It is a very distinctive image and immediately recognisable. One thing that hasn't been mentioned about its symbology is that the multiple faces do give a sense of history in that they may represent different time scales of human occupation.

Paul Bivand

Before the Nebra sky disc was found, so there's no influence there.

As someone who went to art school, and designed logos as part of the curriculum, it was interesting to hear how the logo was born. Like many famous logos it is strong for its' simplicity. To me it does not stand much jigging with. The logo like the show, is enduring. I kind of equate it to a football team badge. The badge tells all you need to know. A last thought on a related issue. Time Team has legs because we love the presenters as much as the content. It makes a vast difference when you have characters on the show, a bit of banter between the cast and wry humor. We surely miss Mick and Phil for this reason.

Helen talked about how flexible the logo is, how you can substitute the faces, and said "it lends itself to endless jokes..." I am now very curious to see those examples!

Debra Kyle

I always thought the three faces were references to the dig being three days

As a graphic designer -- I just geeked out so hard on this podcast! I sometimes think of logos as being a kind of heraldry, and I enjoy designing them (but they are really, really difficult). I've loved the TT logo and it was wonderful to hear its history. Thank you all for this. Truly made my day.

Janie Waters

Having been a graphic designer for 40 years, it was so nice to watch these two talking about the collaborative process in the design world. Logos were probably the most complex projects I ever worked on. Oh and the ultimate whooopsy - losing the logo files. LOL A really nice interview :)

Christopher Samuel

That's wonderful! I've often wondered about the logo so really nice to hear this about it. On Neil's point about shows with identifiable logos the only other one that occurred to me is the class penny-farthing logo for the original series of The Prisoner by Patrick McGoohan. I'd love to know what the OS map is in the titles for the later Time Team series. 🙂

Michelle Cailes

What about Richard Osgood? I was so wrapped in the podcast and then it was over.

Autumn Teeter

Thank you for sharing the story of my next tattoo! 😁

Jenny Wright

Very interesting. Now we need to learn about the music - please 😃

Dr Richard Mellish

"The unforgettable theme tune". Do you mean the drumming, for which I turn down the volume in advance unless I forget?

Hove Steve

Very interesting 👍 Can we have a podcast about the theme now?

Leanne

Thank you for the answer! I didn't expect such a history.
