Time Team's Giselle Király takes you to Ilkley Moor where artwork that's thousands of years old can be found right across the landscape. You'll learn about the different types of rock art, how they're created and how they compare with other examples from around the UK.

There are conversations with rock art specialist Tom Bell and Dr Antonia Thomas from The University of The Highlands and Islands.

What examples of rock art have you come across? Let us know in the comments! You can also contribute to a worldwide database of rock art finds at https://www.megalithic.co.uk.

Loved the video. If I found rock art where would I upload the position of the rock to?

James Leighninger

Nice job, Giselle! You are a rising star in the TT family! Looking forward to more!

Nina

Me too….

Saw some beautiful examples in Northumberland too. Already recorded, so no claim as a new find!

Will

Wasn't there a study that showed that some of the cups were used for cooking, grinding and fermentation?

Alan McMillan

I Love rock art. Made by people from the pages of History.

Peter Horsam

I did see it, maybe it was part of a potcast.

Peter Horsam

It was in a podcast 3rd March 2026.

Jay Kirwan

I saw a show with similar rock art in Norther Italy I believe. Very similar to these, some of those had spirals as well. So amazing and at the time they probably just did it to pass time, not thinking one day people would be so excited about them.

Menetho

Thanks. Glad I wasn't having a Senior Moment. :-)

The ones in the clip where at least in part on an inclined surface, I think those wouldn’t be practical to use for that. But maybe at different places different uses?

Carrie Hartley
