Dig Watch is on site at a Time Team x-crew dig. We're spending three days in the picturesque Dorset village of Mapperton. Will Time Team uncover evidence of Roman activity here? Follow along on Patreon for exclusive daily updates from the excavation.

Ex-crew is our small team who, with limited resources, set out to answer one archaeological question in just three days. Led by Derek Pitman and Lawrence Shaw the team are opening their first trenches on site. Martyn Williams speaks to the archaeologists and metal detectorists who are hard at work on day one.

What do you think the mysterious features on the geophysics could be? Let us know in the comments and join us tomorrow for another Dig Watch episode from site.

A crossover for me. Long time follower of Time Team and a follower of Mapperton.

sheilaellen

Thrilled to discover that you're carrying out a dig so close to my home town, Bridport 🎉

Welshboy007

It must be a Medieval Roman, Anglo Saxon Villa 🤣🤣

Conan Mills

When you all announced this dig a Mapperton I thought it sounded familiar. When I saw Julie it instantly clicked. I have watched her YouTube channel quite a bit.

William Rome

Bringing the excitement! Love it!

Andy Gabriel-Powell

Hmmm. Assuming no tesserae, I'm going for Roman farmhouse rather than villa. However, since you've revealed some medieval coinage too, maybe the site has a longer history. Knight's Templar? A medieval hostelry?

Elisabeth

Wow! Dating coins right off the bat! And walls. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Ian Holmes

I really enjoyed this. Martyn is a great presenter, working to get as much information as possible out in a short time. This really felt like classic old Time Team.

DIANA R NELSON

Looks like it's going to be exciting. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Brian M

Just a great snippet and taster and so well produced and presented !

Liz Smith

Looking forward to this!!!!

Laurence Batchelor

Be good if Stuart could visit to walk the landscape and put whatever Roman building it is into context.

Alan McMillan

Goodcto see what is going to emerge, from time forgotten!

Lilli Haicken

OOO....Possible Roman villa, mansio? Maybe a Roman farm? Soo great!!!

Gin

I shall not-so-patiently await future updates! 😁

Brett W Walters

There is something in the air this year so far, Brancaster and now Mapperton and you can feel that old TIME TEAM camaraderie through the lens. I cannot wait for the X-Crew episode to air... What do I think it is? Maybe an old Roman Farmstead that went into the medieval period.

Karen Quanbeck

How delightful to see the stewardess of Mapperton at a Time Team dig.

Barbara B.

Looking forward to seeing more! But the question of the hour in our house is if detectorist Emma is wearing Time Team earrings? :D

Robin Kark

I'm a Patreon of only 2 accounts. Time Team was the 1st and Mapperton Live is the 2nd. My two "virtual worlds" have collided and I couldn't be happier!!!! So stoked here in Colorado, USA!!! Cannot wait for more to be revealed......

Michael Sperry

Strange (for this American) to hear that Illinois accent coming out of an English Countess' mouth. I love her enthusiasm, though. How exciting to find Roman ruins in one's backyard!

Chef Tess

Sadly, I can honestly say I learned absolutely nothing new on this Dig Watch. It was so spoiler free, it sort of spoiled it.

Samantha England

It would help if we could see more of the trenches!

Leitchy

Brilliant! Can't wait to see more.

Difort

Looks promising and very green!

Jill Sorel

Roman Villa! Martyn you are doing an amazing job filling Tony’s shoes.

Stitch

Thank you for the update. I am enjoying following along

Jay Kirwan

John, back off buddy, Hilda is my dream wife!! I don't like the way you were looking at eachother! 🤣🤣😉

Melissa Rybb

Please please make these youtube-available.

Feathered Herring

Look up Mapperton or American Vicountess on YouTube. Julie has about three or four channels about restoring the estate, her pied-à-terre in Italy and her life as a mid west girl transplanted into the English aristocracy

Julie Siefke

It’s American Countess now, as her father-in-law has passed away.

Larry Besel, Jr.

Martin is a great Precentor! His enthusiasm exceed Tony!

Mary Lu

Thanks to all for the ongoing reports. I’m enjoying the experience vicariously😊!

Andy Quick

I hear you. We have to remember that these are Dig Watches, though. I suspect that they have strict instructions not to give anything away :-). I shall look forward to the release of the episodes.

BevCapeCod

I love the new show, but I miss the individual characters. I wish they weren't all such serious archaeologists. I miss Phil's quirkiness and Mick's sense of humor.

Anne

I was just thinking the same thought.

Anne

Im beginning to like him, he does add a bit of humor and is a TRUSTED colleague.

Todd R

Jon Milward sounds exactly like Timothy Dalton (Actor)

Todd R

the Earl over on the Mapperton Live video when Derek was doing magnetomatry was so excited, the best host since Tony

Roy Kilpatrick

Martyn Williams is doing such a great job hosting dig watch. He also works on Rob Words on Youtube and is also a very good watch.
