Time Team's Phil Harding speaks to Helen Geake and Martyn Williams about a remarkable discovery near Stonehenge.

(Photo: Wessex Archaeology)

Today, archaeologists announced the discovery of a remarkable 5,000-year-old ceremonial site near Stonehenge that may represent the earliest known alignment with the summer and winter solstices in the Stonehenge landscape - predating the famous stone monument itself by around 500 years.

Phil led the excavations, and we were incredibly fortunate to sit down with him to hear the story behind this extraordinary discovery which, as Phil says:

“Is probably one of the greatest finds of my career.”

Time Team members get exclusive early access to the full interview with Phil, which is part of extended coverage of the announcement on the Time Team podcast, out on Tuesday.

Fabulous to see you Phil!!, such exciting news....

Love to see Phil, please tell him he (and of course Time Team, which I discovered only three years ago) is the reason that I am an active volunteer here in Bavaria for the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation - I'm forever grateful he and the team showed me the fantastic world of archeology. Stay safe and healthy always, Phil!!

Liz

It's so good to see Phil Hardinmg again. I do have an idea, and that is to try and find evidence between Stonehenge and the new site by carrying out a search for the possible datable finds along the route between the 2 sites.

Denis Oliver

As always, you have produced a great and informative podcast. Also, it is great to see Phil again!

Leigh Batten

Steve Gunning

What a delight to see and hear Phil Harding talking history and archaeology with Helen, AND on such an incredible subject! My heart is full to overflowing for Phil and his marvellous discovery. I’ve often wondered if my Wiltshire family roots stretched back to this period, and I’ll probably never know, but this gives me goosebumps. Bravo and thank you all. 🦘

John Boudewijn

Magnificent, both the discovery and getting to hear from Phil! <3

Jane

Thank you for all the great questions from Martyn and Helen, they were the ones I would have asked the great Phil Harding. You really know your audience.

steve

I seem to remember three large post pits being found not so long ago near Stone Henge. Did they also pre-date the stones? Long range travel would have been possible by boat of course. Not proven, but possible. People were more connected, and more able than we give credit for. I think the term "stone age" is too loaded with implication that does not convey the sophistication of that culture. It is really only tool culture that is what separates it from those who first used metals

Anne Carpenter

OH Phil, it is so nice to see you again and Bravo to you for your discovery.

Rick Doner

I have always loved the passion, and excitement Phil has for that area and period in history. I could listen to him talk about it for hours.

Mark Ford

Phil's always been a star! This excellent discovery is a fantastic capstone to a brilliant career.

Kathy Bryan

Is it easy to become a volunteer, I live in Bavaria and would love to volunteer too

Gillian Smith

Amazing, still finding stuff at the ring, eh!😁

Mary Soper

My basic question to Phil- when he spends his life digging in the earth, how does he keep his nails so nice?

Marcus Mellåker

What a great find! I now remember a thought I got while watching the Time Team special. Journey to Stonehenge in which it was stated about these hengemonuments that the ditch is on the inside as to keep someone in. I wonder if it could be a way to keep the dead dead by making sure they would not leave the henge. Could it have been a belief that the dead could walk again before the ”journey to become a spirit” as theorized in the episode.

Cecilia Lenk

So pleased Phil has experienced this discovery of a lifetime.

Garry Matthews

How great it is to see Phil is still active and what an inpact this discovery has had on him. It would be amazing to see him involved in a new time team dig at some point. Alway the character, long may he rule

Joanne Kellam

After all of the years of applying his passion and expertise to so many significant sites across the UK and the mentoring he’s provided to up-and-coming archaeologists as well as to all of his fans, no one deserves this more than Phil. A less seasoned archaeologist may not have recognized what the details meant. Well done, Phil!!

Lian Higgott

What an accomplishment. Time team is my favorite show. Thanks to Phil I started my own archeological discoveries. I live in Arkansas USA, next to a creek, I knew was occupied by Native Indians. My brother found tens of flint arrowhead, & from time team discoveries, im finding grindstone, sharpening stones, stone axes, flint blades. You all are great. Keep up the discoveroes!

Helena McGinty

Muslims travel from African, Britain Indonsia on Pilgrimage to Mecca. Chrstians travelled from all over Europe to Palestine on pigrimages Hindus travel to their festivals. It seems that it is an ancient thing.

susan Hanson

I was disappointed to find this podcast doesn't have CC for the hearing impaired like myself.

Jakub Jůzl

It does for me, if I click the icon in the lower right. They are auto-generated but the quality is decent.

Donna Shelton

I am delighted to see Phil. I miss him on the new TT. He’s an amazing archaeologist.

B. Ross Ashley

Phil's enthusiasm and love for the field has always been one of the best parts of the Team, especially expressed in his accent (which I presume is Wiltshire?) Shows us that not all knowledge is contained within RP! I know at our age we slow down a tad but ... All I can say is keep it up, Phil, lad, keep it up!

Shannon G
