Phil Harding tells the Time Team podcast about a remarkable discovery at a site just five kilometres from Stonehenge. Holes thought to have once contained huge wooden posts were discovered which date back 500 years before the stones at Stonehenge were erected. The posts at Bulford line up with the summer and winter solstices, in the same way they do at Stonehenge. It means this new discovery could have been an early prototype for the solar alignment seen at Stonehenge.

In this podcast you'll hear Phil talking to Helen Geake and Martyn Williams, alongside Fabio Silva, an astroarchaeologist, who helped to confirm the findings. There are also details of how you can contribute to Time Team's future research by suggesting sites for new digs.

Phil's love for archaeology is so contagious. How great to hear from him again!

I once dug up a post on a wetland preservation site. Coaled all the way through, oak, more than half a meter thick. Cutting this thing for dendro was an absolute pain but I can't imagine the size of that original post hole.

Happy Birthday, Helen!!!!

Jen Collins

So excited you’re going to dig/evaluate people’s local finds!! That was one of the very best aspects of the original series.

I hope this isn’t a silly question, and perhaps it’s in the sphere of astronomy, but some of the stone came from the north of Scotland and I wonder - does the solstice occur in the north- and if so, then are there more stone henges in different locations across the UK?

Lovely to see and hear Phil again, we've missed him! Fascinating to hear about the sky side of archaeology, it's not something we often hear about. Happy belated birthday Helen!

How does this relate to the ceremonial way towards the river, that was discovered not too long ago?

Elsie Colin

So fantastic to see Phil and hear his passion is still there!
