What could the mysterious circular anomaly be?

Time Team geophysicist John Gater has scanned an area near the iconic neolithic site of The Ness of Brodgar. An intriguing circular pattern has revealed itself in the data, but what is it? Helen Geake shares her theory with co-host Martyn Williams. Time Team's Jackie McKinley also has her own idea of what might be hidden beneath Orkney. She shares her thoughts as she prepares to travel to the site herself. Also on today's podcast; you'll learn how AI is helping to unravel ancient scrolls, find out more about the skeletons discovered on an ancient Wars of The Roses battlefield and you'll hear what happened when Martyn visited Time Team's Meg Russell on a site in Dorset where archaeologists of the future are being trained.

Good podcast, thanks to all involved! I haven’t seen any Dig Watch episodes appearing yet for the current ongoing dig (mentioned on the podcast) - has anyone else?

I'm just happy as soon as I hear the TT theme 🤗

I rejoice that ~400 Hurculaneum scrolls may be revealed. I weep that ~1400 are lost.

While the almost complete circular anomaly looks like a stone circle, especially because of what might be a central stone, the incomplete circular shape below it could be a stock enclosure? Adjacent to that is a partial rectangle: could that be another building? Is it thought that these shapes are all contemporary or are they from different eras?

Brilliant and so well deserved

Where exactly is the dig in Shetland please? Would love to know more about that.

Oh my. Has //john done it again? Another 20 years of work. It looks very convincing. What remains in the ground though is another story. To discover an unknown monument after Phil's big find at Bulford would be an amazing double for the "team"

Martyn mentions several times that Time Team are digging on Orkney right now and that we can "follow along" on Patreon but I don't see any updates about this new dig yet. Will there be dig watch posts or something similar?

I see more than one circle. There seem to be hints of a few even older circles. Is my mind playing tricks on me?

SallyMum

I'm sad to say that my thinking about this is that the large one is a large roundhouse from a later date, esp. with the other two circles nearby.

Yay More Time Team digs!!! Orkney is such a marvelous place. It looks very plausible on the GeoPhys, but yes, its time to go DIG!!!

So excited to hear about continuing progress on the Herculaneum scrolls!! Incredible what technology is doing. ❤️

How long was it taking using the ai method to review each scroll, is it days months or years? Great podcast as ever

Another jam-packed podcast, all very interesting. Hear hear for an entire podcast on Towton, and would also be very interested in the longer interview discussing the Herculaneum scrolls (if there is one). Regarding the new dig at the Ness of Brodgar, is the excavation only for the 1 week TT is there, or will it be longer? I will be in the Orkneys Aug 1-3 and crossing fingers I get to see the new dig. Apologies if this info has already been given.

The AI scroll-reading sounds really too good to be true; I'd love a follow-up asking more questions about how this research is being done to get an accurate, not merely predicted-text plausible reading of each scroll? I love the idea of recovered works, but my personal experience of AI is that it's not actually that reliable at giving correct answers vs. believable answers.
