In this week's Time Team podcast you'll learn about an exciting discovery at New Hall School in Essex, home to the Palace of Beaulieu which was once owned by King Henry VIII. Workers repairing a ha-ha (sunken wall) came across what are thought to be Tudor tunnels, once part of the original palace building. The site was once the subject of a Time Team dig back in 2009. Martyn Williams revisits to see the latest discovery for himself.

Also today, John Gater speaks to Helen and Martyn from Orkney where Time Team's dig at The Ness of Brodgar continues. Time Team members can follow it as it happens here on Patreon. You'll also hear about Orkney's unique rock art from expert Tertia Barnett and Derek Pitman and Lawrence Shaw check out a historic festival at Butser.

Ha-ha walls and ard marks. Archaeology just keeps getting sillier and sillier! 🤪

Simply Nancy

Could they be old service tunnnels? For servants to move back and forth quickly

Chef Tess

I was thinking service tunnels or maybe drainage mains.

Simply Nancy

That makes sense too if they ran all the way to the wall

Cath

Sounds like another possible time team dig !!

KL Sweet

The brodgar butterfly almost looks like an infinity symbol

Lynda

So fabulous

I can hear Mick... 'what a cracking podcast!'. Also, please don't forget the late Peter Reynolds, Time Team's experimental archaeologist on many episodes. He was the soul of Butser Ancient Farm.... Time Team today stands on the shoulders of giants.

Michael Shore

Do you have the Ness carving the right way up ???

Carl Johnson

If anything, the Henry VIII dig shows us how close archeology can be to finding something and just miss it by pit placements. So exciting. I still want to know which bottles John buys Jackie. We remember the bet, John. 👀🥃

Howard Wetsman

I’m getting the impression that the school is running an excavation without an archaeologist. Am I wrong?

Marcus Mellåker

Have we any idea of how the ness might have looked when these structures where constructed? Might more buildings been lost to erosion and ended up on the bottom of the lochs?

Catherine A. Martin

This isn't the same site where there were supposed tunnels from the kitchen to the main house is it? If not, which site was that? I can't remember.

Eelco Kruidenier

I am glad that after 11 minutes into the podcast Helen finally explained what a Haha is. I am sure everybody in England knows, but I did not have a clue.

In South Africa we distinguish between rock art (painting) and rock engravings (pecked). Who studies the finds to see if it's just art or a form of language?
