We've made plenty of progress on site over the past few days, but one thing has the team scratching their heads. Finds have been few and far between, which is a real surprise considering previous excavations just a few feet away produced such a wealth of artefacts.

As we dig deeper into the trenches, we're starting to reveal more of the ard marks that first appeared towards the end of last week. It's slow, careful work, with Dani and Jan patiently trowelling and probing away as they try to piece together what's going on beneath the surface.

Ard work to say the least!

Thanks, Dani. I did enjoy the Ard dragging demonstration.

jason

Thank you for the information. I never knew what an ard was. Good luck on more finds

Dorothy Africa

How do you date ard lines? One would not expect pottery sherds with such activity, though it would be great if some showed up. I think Jackie thought the marks were older than the stone work nearby, so dating the stone work would help?

Bob Greaves

Thanks for all your ard work :)

Peter Horsam

Aardappel -Dutch for earth apple.... or potato as we English would say. ie, aard is a very old word indeed.

Melissa Lawrence

Ards and Aurochs… would there have been a link?

Alan McMillan

Intriguing to see Is it modern, or far older?

Peter Horsam

Great name for a band! Cant see a link, but someone could tell us. Aardvark is earth pig.

Will

I'd seen the wooden hand-plows in Egypt. It's really nice to see a stone one.

If it's a cultivation site under a later robbed out kerbed cairn (or other type of burial feature) you wouldn't expect the same level of finds as the Brodgar settlement, particularly if midden material is being reserved for use there as house insulation. You would expect something though!

DIANA R NELSON

So great to have Dani back. She's a great explainer.

Marj Roul

Are the marks going under later laid stones or have they disturbed laid stones.

Gin

Thank you, Dani. I always enjoy your explanations!🪏

I am very curious about the other features in this trench is it a some kind of circle. Or perhaps a wall or building, I am dying to know.... :)
