Nobody wants this dig to end!

We arrived onsite thinking that Thursday was going to be the last day of digging, but we rapidly realised that with the changeable weather, the dig would most likely spill over into Friday.

We had hundreds of visitors today dodging some pretty hefty showers but the day began and ended in sunshine. There’s a few questions still outstanding and the team wanted a chance to consider the findings tomorrow before the site gets backfilled again.

Today Ben worked rapidly to remove the blocking stones at the entrance way and we now have a clearer understanding of how that might have looked. It seems possible that there were orthostats lining the entrance way and a possible porch outside it, so it could have been quite an impressive looking building.

But we still need to understand how the newly discovered structure 45 and another wall relate to 44. And any more dating evidence would be very welcome.

So all in all there are some burning questions still eating away at the experts and the team want another crack at a few areas tomorrow morning. So we’ll be back tomorrow after all!

I love your curiosity that won't just let go.

David Austen

Do we think the building was stone-built, like others on the site? Alternatively, was it timber-based, more akin to an Iron Age roundhouse? The former seems suspicious, with the uniform level of the remaining stone circle, whilst the stones could form pads for timber uprights?

Just to say that it is one of the highlights of my day to catch up with Dig Watch. I am really enjoying this dig. Thank you everyone

I’m on the other side of the world in central Victoria, Australia. I’ve been waking each morning in anticipation to see what you’ve uncovered whilst I’ve been asleep. It’s been an exciting and interesting few weeks. Thank you for sharing the journey.

Many more than three days, but never long enough. Dig Watch always makes me thirst for more!

Fiona Ducrey

Only one more day! It's been great...

Too much to do -too little time. Thanks Team for a really insightful demonstration of Archaeologists at work. Good to see all our money being well spent. If I can ever get on a dig then the drinks are on me!

Inez

mine, too!

Bob Kingsmill

I was amazed at how straight the edges of the slab in the hearth was and again this threshold slab. How did they make such straight cuts? Did they have some sort of saws? Maybe they had figured out that a string plus sand would make a straight cut?

Michael Sperry

I think we'd all like to see a Dig Watch installment from the pub. I keep seeing John comment that he'd like a pint, so let's see it! :D

Luke T Jacobs

Yes, would love to see them all chatting at the pub with a pint!!!

Sigurd Towrie

Stone built. Typical Neolithic construction.

David Austen

Thanks Sigurd. So has the building been robbed to a consistent level? There doesn't appear to be much other residual stonework around. Maybe they were respectful of it's previous life?
