Day 2 is well underway and great progress is being made across the various trenches. The weather has taken a turn for the worse, although, to be fair, we probably should have expected that! Thankfully, spirits are still high and the team are cracking on.

We all know how much Hilde enjoyed presenting Dig Watch back at Mapperton, so we thought we’d hand her the trowel mic once again.

Stewart and Lawrence take the opportunity to share a little more about the site, what the team are hoping to uncover, and why this remote location is proving so fascinating. We also take a quick look at a couple of the trenches to see how the expedition is progressing and, most importantly, there are already some finds starting to appear!

Tomorrow, we’d love to take the opportunity to answer some of your questions about the site. So, get your questions into the comments and we’ll try to answer as many as we can!

Yes - mike holder is awesome! Such fun!

So maybe the buildings are not that old given the ploughing underneath them

Jakub Jůzl

Gotta say the close captions really struggle with the words "Dig watch" in this one. :) Thanks for the update!

I'm so impressed by the dedication and fortitude of this team! The conditions as well as the logistics in it all look really really tough. They are amazing!

Bob Greaves

Clay + turf + burning + pottery sherds = could they have been firing pots up there?

Kristin Hartnett

The curvy "tails" could they be a trench for garbage? I missed seeing the graphics of what the trenches cut. across

Just some Border Mist, right?!?! :D Thank you for preserving in those weather conditions!

My guess is a little wall to block the wind somehow, just like the indigenous homes on the coast in the Nevis episodes. That's pure guesswork, tho, based on the conditions of this actual episode. :)

Love your thinghimygig, you talk into! Does it talk back?

I love the trowel mic! So chic

Is this a protected site?? Why are utility carts not allowed? Is the land too friable for heavy objects like cars or even carts? Or might it endanger some of the archeology? As part of the research, does anyone talk to the people still living in the area to find out any stories handed down about this particular land about who lived there and when?

DIANA R NELSON

Thanks for bringing us up to date in the rain.

Stewarts knowledge and insight never fails to fascinate. Hilde, if you don't want to host you should pretend to be bad at it! Hope you all got your hot showers.

Thanks everyone, especially Hildi, you showed us just how uneven and tricky the terrain is to work in. 🤞for better weather for the rest of your dig. My question is, are you able to find evidence of what crops were being grown there yet,?

Eggs Ackley

The ghosts of my borderer (reiver) ancestors are loving this, as am I!

Sir Tony has mentioned in the past that the original Time Team concept was in part inspired by shows like Challenge Anneka - I've never understood that comment as well as I did watching poor Hilde make her way across the landscape in the rain holding a mic on a trowel! 😅

Larry Besel, Jr.

Always a treat to watch a Time Team broadcast! Such an incredible assembly of experts and special characters!

"I'm a sleepy dumpling after lunch." Hahaha!

Hilde may not enjoy the 'presenting' side of things, but she always does a great job! Trowel mike is the best! Thanks X crew.

The amazing Brilliance of everyone who has ever been associated with Time Team is beyond tear inducing, it actually does something strange to my dogeared Heart. Thank you.

Stewart really is exceptional. Not only skilled, but wise. His insights always feel like they could only be discerned by him. And Hilde, you did a great job!
