It’s the final day of our Kielder X-Crew excavation, and what an adventure it’s been!

It’s been a truly fascinating and challenging dig, but that’s the beauty of X-Crew!

We hope you enjoy this quick Dig Watch Q&A, featuring some of your questions, along with a short site tour with Stewart as the last trenches are backfilled.

We’re really looking forward to sharing more content and behind-the-scenes footage from this dig and will, of course, keep you up to date with the planned release of this episode.

Thank you so much for joining us for Dig Watch over the last three days.

We look forward to sharing more about this site with you all very soon!

Trowel mic has grown up into mattock mic.

LadyBracknell

Talk about ‘lumps and bumps’! Thank you for taking us along with typical Time Team enthusiasm to such a remote and beautiful site! Much appreciated ✨

Jo

And thanks to all of you for all the on site info.

Mikael Larsson

Thank you all, for enduring all the hardship and midges, to get us all the great content. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Jane Parker

Would the Border Rievers whether recognising themselves as Scottish or English, have taken over and built upon structures captured

Gin

Ah, the rewards of being a Patreon member bring happy returns again and again. I relish having a front row/behind the scenes tour of these incredible archeological journeys! Thank you!

Adrian Murphy

Well done x-crew! I'm looking forward to the episode.

Michael Crouch

I’m enjoying these updates, it looks like quite a tough dig. A question: Can Stewart recommend any useful books on how to read a landscape, or has he written one?

steve

so different forms of investigation will tell you different parts of the whole story of this landscape

Bob Greaves

Thanks very much for answering my question. I can't wait to see the finished episode!

W Pierce

Great job team, despite all the challenges! Love the trowel mic has graduated to a pickaxe mic!! :-)

Kev E

What a gorgeous place....really looking forward to finding out what it all is there. Keep up the stirling work team 👏

Chris

Dangerous looking mich. Please don't stumpfe 🤠

Alexandra

I wonder if you're allowed to post a map pinpointing where you are? I've looked at Kielder Forest, but would love to know where the site actually is.

Fiona D

I feel like I must have missed something. But how *do* we know the site was only used 5 months of the year?

Ali Spencer

X-crew marks the spot!! Good on ya. Looking forward to seeing the episode now and hearing about the results.

Cheryl

Thank you for answering my questions! I hope three wet, midgefilled days with long treks in and longer out (uphill!) was long enough on the site to answer the questions you originally had and the other questions the site itself raised. Thank you so much for this very interesting exploration.

S D

Are those tree plantations on the striped hills behind the site, and have plantation workings affected the site? And how far did the residents there have to travel to trade for new pots or metal goods? If perhaps tinkers came by once a year, or because it was seasonal, they just did without during their stay?

sheilaellen

Maybe you need some literal pack horses.

Kathy Calmejane

And I thought Trowel Mic couldn't get any more iconic!

Michelle Cailes

Mic 🎤 has grown up overnight. I love the use of tools; less intimidating for the archeologists than an actual mic shoved in their faces. 😂

Carol Buchan

Looking forward to finding out more

Good question - here's a few from Stewart: Old but still a good starting point... THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE by W G.Hoskins UNRAVELLING THE LANDSCAPE edited by Mark Bowen (with a contribution by Stewart Ainsworth) Hillforts: Prehistoric strongholds of Northumberland National Park. By Al Oswald, Stewart Ainsworth, Trevor Pearson, Interpreting the Landscape: Archaeology and Local History By Mick Aston

Kerry Hennigan

the variety of Time Team head gear is entertaining. Nice one, Lawrence!

Kristin Hartnett

Thanks for entertaining my question. Can't wait to see what hard won answers you all come up with in the upcoming episode.

Dr Richard Mellish

There was some discussion of earlier work here and a map from that time shpwing structures. What was done, when, what was found and what was the rationale for a new round of excavations?

Drew

The audio could do with a bit of compression.

Julied123

Great update , thank you💜

Lord John

at least Stewart can use a mic correctly. enough of the micplay
