Join us as author and historian Alistair Moffat shares his incredible knowledge of the Border Reivers.

Filmed at the beautiful Abbotsford House in the Scottish Borders, in this fascinating interview, Alistair gives us an insightful look into the history of the Reivers, bringing the period to life with stories and tales from this turbulent chapter of the Anglo-Scottish Border.

We recently headed to Kielder to excavate a site connected to this period, helping to build the archaeological record and deepen our understanding of the Border Reivers and the world they inhabited.

THE REIVERS: THE STORY OF THE BORDER REIVERS - ALISTAIR MOFFAT

From the early fourteenth century to the end of the sixteenth, the Anglo-Scottish borderlands suffered one of the most intense periods of warfare and disorder in modern Europe. The story of the Reivers is one of survival, stealth, treachery, ingenuity and deceit.

If you would like to hear a special edition of the Time Team podcast where Helen Geake and Martyn Williams chat to Alistair Moffat, to discuss his recent book you can LISTEN here!

A huge thank you to Abbotsford House for hosting us at such an incredible location. Abbotsford is a historic country house near Galashiels, on the banks of the River Tweed, built as the home of novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott between 1817 and 1825. It is also open to the public and you can find information about visiting here: https://www.scottsabbotsford.com/

Wonderful to hear this interview with Alistair. I read his book The Sea Kingdoms many years ago.

My family name is on a Manor House and a Toll Booth outside of Lockerbie. We rode with the Johnsons against the Maxwells. It's great to hear from whence my people come.

Fascinating interview. I am descended from these Scotch-Irish and have always wondered about their history as it was never spoken of in family lore….. more research to be done 👍🏼
