As we look back on our latest excavation, we wanted to share a short video featuring some fascinating insights from Professor Carole Rawcliffe of the University of East Anglia.

In this video, Carole explores how people in the medieval world understood and responded to leprosy, offering a glimpse into the experiences and attitudes of the time. She also shares how she first became interested in the subject and what led her to dedicate her research to this important area of medieval history.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse into the history behind our latest excavation!

Very interesting. That is how history and archeology should work hand in hand. Thank you.

Professor Rawcliffe, Thank you for sharing your insights and knowledge about leprosy from so many different perspectives. I would be most keen to hear you speak at length on the subject. I also appreciated that you concluded by encouraging empathy for those with disease.

How interesting to hear. I used to visit the Lazar House in Norwich as a child when it was used as a library so I became aware of leprosy quite early on.

It never ceases to amaze me how the things we think we know about our past history, is in fact nonsense and myth, only perpetuated recently.

So interesting to learn about leprosy and to realise that in the past the term included a variety of illnesses and conditions.
