He seemed like the type of guy we would love to have as an instructor.

Daniel Sini

He seemed such a great guy <3

Sarah Corrigan

Stripes.... I need to get knitting some jumpers eh?

Tanis Sugden

Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt perspective

Wendy Clare

Mick had a wonderful gift of explaining things simply to children and adult site visitors, making them enthusiastic.

Matthew Kirsch

Didn't Mick fall down a well in the mid 90's and break his leg? #legend

Matthew Kirsch

There's a market for his jumpers. Start with that on their merchandise website!

JUDITH COOKE

Thanks John. A great tribute to launch the new era of Time Team. Fond memories.

Lady of the Leaves

I can’t wait to see more from you and all your associates!

Todd Gillespie

Enjoyed the interview John and Tim. I do miss Mick and Robin.

Carl Johnson

I found out about time team after it had ended, and then I found out Mick had died just as I had started to enjoy his knowledge and what I could learn from watching him. I'm so glad Time Team captured these 20 years.

Dafydd Balston

Mick was such an important character. His skills were subtly obvious (he always seemed to choose the right course of action, even if he playfully used his team as a foil), and his ability to communicate complex ideas to us laypeople, in his soft Midlands accent, made what had traditionally been seen as a dry subject come alive. I have often wished I had had someone like him as a teacher at school, because then his kindling of my interest might have led me to get my hands dirty!

Amy Quinn

A wonderful tribute!

Steve Streeting

Lovely tribute. Lovely to see JAG again!

Duane Howard

Great tribute for a great man

Stan Hughes

Wonderful to hear from John and wonderful tribute. Now where can I get a mug like that? :)

Irene Daly

I miss the Time Team so much. I’ve always said they should be a staple part of every school curriculum. They are invaluable in giving us a genuine , fact filled glimpse into the lives of our ancestors.

Goijaart van Dijk

As John says, Mick always made an effort to involve everyone and to have stuff properly done as well as properly explained. Was this perhaps because he originally was picked as presenter on Timesigns?

Bart Remeeus

amazing tribute to Mick. He was an amazing person for sure.

Loretta VanHaasteren

Thanks for remembering a really wonderful guy—-all TT fans miss him!

Katy Dunn

Lovely to hear your memories of a remarkable man

Ian Rudd

Mick was Time Team. You can see how much John admired the man. Great tribute.

Rob Sykes

John gave a wonderful tribute to Mick. My wife & I discovered Time Team long after the series ended. Each member of the team brought their unique gifts and Mick was the prime example. His knowledge & understanding was so broad & deep. Yet, he asked excellent questions instead of stating what he already suspected or knew. A very fine man, excellent archeologist, and obviously a cherished friend to his friends & colleagues.

Daniel Defoe

Guys! You're missing out! I would buy SEVERAL stripey Mick Aston mugs! Put 'em in the shop! Oh, and Mick's stripey caps and Phil's grungy hat too. So wish I could have met Mick.

Eggs Ackley

I’ll echo loudly all you’ve said Daniel especially about meeting Mick.

Kathi Kiley

Other site managers would make bold claims but be wrong. Mick was much more careful and thoughtful with his speculations. He left us far too soon.

Conan Mills

I first watched Time Team in 2005 when I lived in Hawaii and was immediately hooked. When I had the chance to live in the UK in 2012 we would drive by a town or village and annoyed my Wife by saying "Time Team did a dig here". Mick was truly a national treasure.

Gary Mortimer

This is a good idea! No writing on it, just a grab of one of Mick's jumper colour sets, those that know, know.

Elaine

Absolutely lovely to hear some info about Mick. Such an inspirational man. I’ve loved time team for many many years and am a proud owner of a time team trowel that I won through the magazine for knowing what a Roman spear was called. :) proud to support the effort for a return :) x

Nicholas & Elizabeth Dyer

So pleased to hear this, we have just signed up. Started re-watching Time Team during lockdown 1

Michael Huffaker

Mick always seemed to look for the silver lining, this is important since you frequently don't make major discoveries on digs but you find out subtle facts. This attitude keeps team members balanced I think.

Larissa Spiker

Very nice words from John Gator. Mick was larger than life. I love his stripey mug!

SEAN STANLEY

I so miss Time Team. It's my favourite program and have all the dvd discs available so far. I have many episodes on disc that I recorded when they where first shown. I am so happy that the cogs are now turning towards a return.

Raymond J Hindle

I have been addicted to Time Team since the very beginning! Very happy to see the return of this entertaining, and educational series!

Christopher Samuel

Thank you so much John for sharing your memories of working with Mick. Very much missed.

Mark Cooke

Thank you John, love the mug

Tommy

Agreed, would love to see that mug in the shop!

Andy Cockerill

Nice to hear from you John, always the gentleman and often under the cosh during the digs.

Jenna Chanthavisay

Some of my favorite memories from Time Team episodes was you, Stewart, Mick and Phil “discussing” the geophys! Always funny yet I learned quite a lot from those little squabbles.

JIm ford

Well done John your so right

Moshsolo

I’m not an archeologist, but if I had been exposed to people like Mick Aston and the crew of Time Team at an early age in life, I’d be digging trenches some where in the world today.

Futrettamer

I wouldn't be digging trenches - I hate mud!- but I'd probably be an archivist

Duane E Massung

John Gater: you pretty much identified all the places for Time Team to dig through your surveys. Congrats! You are the unsung hero of this show.

Paul Convery

While Tony was the gateway for the audience who was willing to ask all the questions non-archaeologists would have, Mike had the knowledge and the ability to explain it in a manner we could all understand. Mike clearly had a real gift for educating people, and he really did bring all the different techniques together that made Time Team so special.

Colin Paterson

I think they only used Tony because he was a well known face, before Time Team Mick and Phil were in another programme that was really good without the whinging of Robinson.

Christopher

When I heard the news about Mick, I felt, emotionally, like a favorite Uncle had died.

Roxy Schoen

I gotta be honest, when I was deciding whether to join this Patreon idea for Time Team, I asked myself very carefully "would Mick Aston have approved of this whole idea?" It's hard to not see him as so fundamental to the whole thing that the impossibility of it without him isn't right there, all the time. I'm giving it a go. I hope he would have approved.

John Potter

Dear Mick, resonates perfectly with me, shall always miss him, forever remember his backyard explanations to the owners as another fence comes down....

Joel Murdoch

There is no better way to honour someone who has passed than to continue their work. Their passion should not die with them.

Pleased Pete

Thanks John, that was wonderful. I think Mick would approve of this new set up for Time Team

Paul Middleton

Not many people make a lasting impression on your life but Mick was one of those people.

Michael Schneider

I agree - Mick mugs with the TT logo. John’s heartfelt tribute is so touching because you could see how the whole team loved working with Mick. Loved watching him explain it to us through Tony. But man those shots of him leaning out of the helicopters till makes my heart jump a beat.

Will Chapman

I was drawn to the series by the team under Mick and it was his presence that kept me watching despite my irritation with Tony's style. The loss of Mick was tragic but the concept is so inspired and informative that you deserve my support through Patreon.

Maria O'Leary

Mick was some storyteller with each new dig he did. Thank you for your tribute to Mick. John see you on the next TimeTeam adventure🥰

Kevin

Mick made the show for me, the way he interacted with everyone and would actually listen to what they were saying. His banter and cheerful disposition and those colourful jumpers and hats suited him down to the ground.
