Time Team recently spent several years researching the stunning Medieval town of Dunster in Somerset for our ‘Dig Village’ project. We enlisted the expertise of buildings archaeologist and illustrator, Dr Richard Parker, who helped us strip back the layers of history and find some of the earliest buildings in the town. Many of the houses turned out to be hundreds of years older than originally thought, with ancient structures hidden behind more recent facades.

In this video, community archaeologist Dani Wootton catches up with Richard to discover more about his role and share memories of their time crawling through the attics of Dunster. Richard gives us a unique window into his craft and shares his insights on the importance of reconstruction drawings in helping to bring the past alive.

Favourite anecdote of the interview? Ours has to be Richard’s description of “an absolutely banging cloister!”

The details that he highlights are amazing. They are almost too much to take in. His interviews too are so compelling I could listen to him for hours. To time team.. thank you for arranging this interview I really enjoyed it.👏👏👏👏👏

Patricia Amero

My goodness, how did I miss this video 3 years ago? This is wonderful... thank you so much, Time Team, for the heads-up.

Robert Wise

I enjoyed this interview! Dr. Parker has a quite lively video presence! Thanks to both of you and I hope Dr. Parker chooses to bring his knowledge and artistic skills to TT2. Bringing the past to life in this way is invaluable! Drawing an object is a great way to get to know it and it’s details!

Ann H

Post the name of the paper used here. He dropped his voice and I missed it. I do some drawing and am considering doing some so materials information is most useful.

Ann H

Ancient attics of Britain! A series.

Christopher Ledger

Another great informative interview with a gifted expert. Thank you again for sharing this with us.

Richard says he uses plastic drafting film because it's a stable medium and you can make corrections

Ann H

Thanks so much.

Ann H

Would be lovely to see a subset (one of the background comparative rambles) of Time Team on the surviving medieval/early painted walls and ceilings. Not archaeology per se but it is how the walls were articulated and interacted with the populace. Hard to light so a challenge.

E Anna Johnson

Absolutely fascinating interview again with a gifted expert. Thank you for sharing . We really do appreciate it.

Eggs Ackley

Enjoyed Richard’s insights and drawings very much. Dani now needs to get a throne (or at least a somewhat more engaging backdrop.)🎑

Punished Brains

Oh I looooooved this! He's exactly right with seeing the plans and not really grasping what they mean volume-wise. Beautiful.

Susie Stockton-Link

Very impressed with Richard. Vernacular architecture was my post grad subject: my tutor, Ron Brunskill, always said "If you want the hidden history of a building, go right up - or right down. No-one alters the roof space or the cellar". He was right! Richard's a man after my own heart. I love characters; Richard I should love to meet!

Justin T Donie

A Kickstarter or other crowd-funded book of Richard's illustration work and perhaps of his processes seems an absolute MUST😊! Whether a paperback volume or a glossy coffee table number, I truly can't imagine this not getting funded very quickly. Outstanding work which deserves to be shared with the countless enthusiasts who would derive so much learning and inspiration from these insightful master-works. 📖

Kevin

Really enjoyed watching this. It was great to see and hear the enthusiasm of Richard, it was infectious. I think he needs to speak to a publisher as a book would be brilliant and may engage with a new group of individuals. Those who in the first instance would be drawn by the art to the subject matter and then become interested in the narrative of the history.

Sarah Holloway

This was a great interview . It was very interesting and looking forward to hearing more in the future.

Mark Lund

Wonderfull drawings/illustrations. Please bring out a book of them all! I'd buy it..for genuine 'Coin'.

This man is a gem - yet another example of the high standard of expert embraced within the Time Team family. Also - Dani is a great interviewer - really listening to Richard's answers!

Fern Wilcox

I want to "play" with both of you! I could listen to you two for ages. This was fantastic!

Chris Hutton

Can someone clean Dani's camera lens. It doesn't do her smile justice.

Chaz Lockett

What a lovely person, he clearly has such joy for his art! Can't wait to see more.

Amy Singerle

Great interview. It makes me want to learn more about architecture of different periods.

Ann Wagner

What a wonderful man! I’m a curator of drawings in Arkansas and I’m in love with Dr. Parker’s work. I surely hope he will do one or more books. His renderings are fascinating and deeply involving. And his figures are a hoot! I totally agree that art history and archaeology are closely related disciplines. So often, art historians are also trying to figure out what is under the surface, how things used to be, what is gone now, and how works were done. I would add art conservation as a field closely akin to archaeology.

Karen Kelsky

Where do we find these drawings??

TimeTeamOfficial

Thanks for these Karen. Perhaps we can persuade Richard to crack on with that book!

SEAN STANLEY

This man is a must for his knowledge and character. Those drawings are so good. They provide such a rich content and insight to any building.

Mme R

Great interview, thank you. I hope we will see much more of both participants. The enthusiasm and knowledge and the desire to communicate both is so pleasing and admirable.
