Paul Booth is a key authority on Roman villas in the Cotswolds – the region in central England (which includes Gloucestershire and parts of neighbouring counties such as Oxfordshire) could be said to have witnessed a ‘Golden Age’ of villa building in the later years of Roman-occupied Britain. Many of the largest and most lavish villas are concentrated in this area, including the villa on the Broughton Estate at the centre of our upcoming dig.

Not only did Paul Booth write a landmark text on Roman Oxfordshire, he was also one of the principal archaeologists directly involved in the original evaluation of the Broughton site by Oxford Archaeology that established and confirmed the presence of the villa. Simply put, his local expertise is second to none, and we are delighted that he will be joining us at the dig.

In this extensive chat, Tim and Paul take a deep dive into the subject, firstly discussing the wider context, before taking a closer examination of the Broughton villa in the second half. It’s a heady conversation, but one that provides some invaluable insights into the specific site itself and the wider perspective. (If you want to jump straight to our upcoming dig, start about 20 minutes in!)

A really interesting conversation thanks for sharing

Donna Oglesby

I found this conversation very informative and interesting as well in dealing with the Roman Villia found at the Broughton Estate, It was a dig that when I first saw the show, after stumbling on Time team a few months ago, and have become a digger supporter along with getting a Tshirt, and TWO of your Time Team Books Now, Tim...Can not wait to see what else they have found. Though My personal interest in is anything from the Vikings, since I am 28% Scandinavian.:-) . Thank you so much for sharing this bit of a chat with Paul.

Plans for North Leigh? Great stuff. If I can help out, I will. Love the place. There's a whole unexcvated or re-covered wing there, worthy of a dig I'm sure.

Mike Lowndes

And Stonesfield should be a future Time Team!

Robert Wise

Wonderful to hear so much of Paul’s perspective! Thank you both! So now I’m wondering, is there a distribution of villa sizes from small to gargantuan, or do they all tend to be roughly large?

Doug Mackey

The excitement is building!

Martha Berryman

Tim & Team, in this fascinating discussions, if there is a "Zoom" audio lag or video problem, just TURN OFF THE VISUAL!!! The audio LISTENS just fine and we're not distracted by tech tangles.

Eggs Ackley

Great conversation. Let the digs begin🏺🏺🏺!

E Anna Johnson

Fascinating. Thank you. And of course like Martha, there are always way round "tech tanges"

Jeanne Peskett

That was a really interesting conversation, and I will look forward to hearing more from Paul, who it has been my pleasure to excavate with on several occasions at Dorchester on Thames. What he doesn't know about Roman Oxfordshire probably isn't worth knowing 🙂.

For anyone interested in a walk through of a Roman villa it’s useful to read the Younger Pliny describing his place in Laurentum in one of his letters. It really helps to flesh things out to envisage the sort of thing that might once have been there if you had the sort of wealth Pliny clearly had anyway.

Susie Stockton-Link

Quite fascinating: always such a pleasure to listen to the real experts on a site and its locale. SO looking forward to seeing the techie sub surface results and the interpretation of them on our screens!
