We recently previewed a snippet of Carenza Lewis discussing the upcoming Roman villa dig on the Broughton Estate, Oxfordshire. We’re pleased to now share the entire conversation.

What you are witnessing here is a rare insight into the process of preparing for a dig – the kind of strategy conversations that go on behind closed doors in the lead up to a shoot.

When the villa was first discovered, the Broughton Estate commissioned Oxford Archaeology to carry out a small-scale preliminary evaluation in order to confirm its presence. A key figure on the team was leading Roman Oxfordshire expert, Paul Booth, who will be joining us on this year's dig.

In this dig strategy discussion, Carenza and Tim refer to the findings in that original evaluation report. While it's not necessary to read the report to follow the conversation, suffice to say here that it highlighted a few anomalies on the site and raised some fascinating questions that Carenza would like to get to the bottom of...

(You may also wish to rewatch our interview with Paul Booth, in which he discusses that original evaluation in more detail.)

Can't wait to see how the dig develops

Edward Catalano

This is going to be great. Having Carenza back is amazing!

Robert Wise

Thanks to both of you for sharing these insights! So now I’m curious … did the cross-channel trade diminish significantly following the Roman withdrawal from Britain … and could this have had an effect on the villa owner’s life style?

Eric Tottman-Trayner

These 'Dig Strategy' conversations are allowing the team members' expertise to be demonstrated much more than previously and, consequently, the whole exercise is becoming much more informative and enjoyable. More please; both pre-dig and post-dig.

Stephen Walls

I agree, it's great to have Carenza onboard.

Robert Wise

It was a serious question with unintended humor-ocity… but now that you mention it …

Kieran Gane

Great insights. It will be a fascinating dig. Thanks Carenza.

Eggs Ackley

I think we can now consider the early 5th century as the “Roxit” period.

Susie Stockton-Link

I DO hope it's not been disturbed and that the Team CAN find some of the answers to some of the questions posed! Ooooh, can't wait!

Laura Ann Flynn

I love these conversations because they make us even more excited for the shows to air. It’s wonderful to be a patreon. Thank-you, Carenza!

Donna Oglesby

I would Love to, as Tim stated in this conversation , to see if there are any other burials, on the site to dig up, wondering if there is any mosaic flooring anywhere, that have been found at other sites. I wish Phil could be there and be able to do more digging since he was there before...BTW, Great to see Carenza, and that she is back with time team, have always enjoyed her, and her insights on digs. Will miss Tony not saying the famous " And we got just three days to do it"...

Anthony cotton

I don't live to far from broughton Castle, will we be able to visit or even volunteer some how when the dig is on?

Don Cook

Francis Pryor has some interesting/compelling insights on this much misinterpreted time.

Mik Firestone

Please keep doing these. I really enjoy the "behind the scenes" stuff, and is exactly what I was hoping to get access to as a patreon.

Sarah Holloway

Great discussion ! the excitement is growing for us all .

Kevin

Really enjoyed this "behind the scenes" insight.

Janet Sutton

This sounds like a fascinating site. Is the original site report available anywhere for us to read?
