Did you find a villa in the last model?

Here's another model captured this week, zooming in to the specific area and with the crop removed. We reckon there might be something in there...

Is it my imagination, or do I see a vague rectangle in the middle of that field? if yes, then it is suspicious that the surrounding field boundaries seem to be parallel to it. Brian.

Martha Berryman

Are those Wall Lines discernible in lower middle?

What software is used to collect the data points and create the 3D view? Brian.

Rachel Greenham

oh there's definitely something rectilinear going on there, as i can almost hear someone saying...

David Thorndike

I can just see something in the first model now. Very interesting.

Can I see what looks like a H shape in the centre reminds me of turkdean

Gill Palmer

A ghost of a possibility….I keep trying to tilt it to see shadows but of course that doesn’t work. Looking for higher contrast.

Gill Palmer

Loving how the visual representation of this data is so intuitive: ‘I see a villa!’ or ‘I don’t see a villa…(yet)’.

Richard Yoast

this view is much clearer than the full 3-D model - pretty clear rectangular shapes in the field with a lot of suggestive right angles

Hillfort Games

Feels like you can see the courtyard right in the middle, so that’s a good sign for sure!

Pat Szastkiw

Just noticed trucks in bottom right-hand corner. Gives a good idea of scale.

Hrm. The parch marks seem like they're still there, so I think TT might be right, there's something there to investigate. I wonder what it could be? (To paraphrase Sir Tony, we're looking for a roman villa, let's hope it's not another cow shed...there's three days to find out!)

Matthew Adams

My eyes are probably a bit dim, but where is the water supply for the villa? Those all look like regular boundary hedges rather than watercourse. Or is it the boundary at the top of the image?

Elaine P

Whatever it is (of course it's a Roman villa!), it's massive. Darned exciting!

Allegra Carlton

If the paler shapes indicate a building range or ranges, then the place must have been a palace!

Michael Green

Call me, I know where we should put our first trench. (Lol BTW).

One topic that I find fascinating is spolia: the re-use of building materials. While I understand that the Roman buildings in the site below were built almost 1700-2000 years ago the fact that every stone above ground level has been “robbed out” is fascinating. When did the majority of this activity occur? Was it an organized effort? Can any of the building materials be found in existing buildings in the area?
