Day One of our Roman villa dig in Oxfordshire is off to a great start. Here's Tim, Derek and Lawrence this morning discussing a key aspect of the dig: data gathering.

Over each weekend, we are amassing a huge amount of data using a range of techniques, which will ultimately be pulled together to provide an immersive experience for both sites.

We are already sharing a small taster of this through the 3D models on Sketchfab, and we'll be delving into this further as the project develops.

More pieces of the puzzle will be revealed in due course, and we hope to show you Tim having a go with a virtual reality headset in the not too distant future!

In the meantime, look out for today's Site Walkabout and Spoil Heap Q&A sessions coming very soon...

Ooh— I do have an Oculus (which I have used to do a walk-around of Gobekli Tepi and Petra in the past)!

Michael Lyons

A fly on the screen. So you had a buggy system. Only needed fly spray to debug this one.

David Duncan

Tech sounds awesome! Can't wait to experience it!

Lacy Oden

The tech we get to have for this is just amazing! I really enjoy the 3D maps. The photos and behind the scenes info is really a gift as it is, but the fact that some folks will be able to use VR is just so incredibly cool :)

niels lammers

Beautifull. Lovely 3D's, keep them coming. Also, any chance Guy de la Bédoyère is going to pay you guys a surprise visit? Loved him as specialist and Enfant Terrible of Tony.

Mark Bousfield

Somewhere there's a fly saying to itself.... "I tried to point it out to them, but they just wouldn't look...."

Robert Wise

Loved the fly story … and the jokes! I think this dig’s gonna be good! I like the effort to bring us digital folks as much onto the site as possible! Is there a trick to viewing the 3D models in SketchFab? The first 3D model from the Fogou site loaded fine, but neither one from the Roman site wants to finish loading. I’m in the U.S. using an iPadPro IOS 15, and the downloads begin, but seem to stop part way through.

Aaron Albright

Nice to see the presenters skulking around in the background

JUDITH COOKE

Great intro. Is it possible to have an “X marks the spot” on the 3D maps? I am having some difficulty in identifying the exact location.

Kathryn

So Exciting! Love feeling like we’re there listening in on these conversations :-) Keep it coming, guys!

Cheryl Kurucz

Learning to use a touchscreen it’s definitely a big learning curve for me lol! Very frustrating when I started it! Only the fly doing the Congo dance was my finger lol! Awesome first interview on the different types of tech can’t wait for next peak!

Ann H

In U.S. it loaded fine on Windows 10 over cable and wifi if that helps with diagnostics.

Ann H

TT can you/yours add a few minimal comments on English Roman villas versus those in Italy, France, etc. Not the imperial ones or Armerina (exceptional) but just as a quick comparison? From the States we often lack the bigger picture from you field experts.

Kieran Gane

Very exciting, but with the description of spatial and temporal layers I thought I was watching an episode of Dr Who for a moment there!

Steve Jeffery

When the show's been put together and "broadcast" can we get a look back at the stories that might have been? You're so keen not to give away too much due to "spoilers", which I get up to a point but your Patreons are hardly going to not watch because they know the ending, it would be nice to see how the eventual story grew out of what I assume are multiple contenders.

Ian Thomson

A problem has occurred regarding my Macbook. apparently 3D VR is not possible with MAC, Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ian Thomson

Otherwise it is a brilliant programme and old and new participants are blending together as a TEAM. The very essence of Time Team. the bounce ideas and opinions off one another and everyone benefits.

Olivia McGerty

I am so completely impressed and grateful for the way that all of you make us feel included in this venture! I live very far away and the archaeological methods used here are different from yours so it is fascinating for me to watch all that you do! Thank you, thank you!

Andy H

I can feel an Amazon search for VR headsets coming

Alex Schultz

oh man I have to figure out the VR now I see this :D :D

Kathryn Phelps

Oh good lord, its all just so....exciting!

Patti McCarthy

Nice intro to an exciting second dig!! Many thanks! Go, Time Team!

David de Groot

Well that all sounds pretty exciting :)
