It's Day Three of Dig Two and (finally) Derek and Lawrence have been coerced into actual digging!

So, we've gone for a little Site Walkabout without them. Here's whats happening in some of the trenches today.

You must have discovered a lot of exciting things that you need all hands on board today! Can’t wait to see the finished show. Your behind the scene clips are very entertaining and make me feel involved in the project. I am recovering from some minor surgery, you are giving my day some highlights. Thank you guys.

Philip Stack

This report makes the scale of the excavation clear, both in terms of the land area covered and the span of time involved. I imagine making sense of it all will be challenging. Time Team clearly made the right sacrifice to the weather gods: two excavations and no torrential rain storms!

Terry Cox

Just a thought, but as general content that could be used to encourage more people to become patrons, it might be worth recording some general background tutorial footage explaining some of the basic techniques, like the sequence of digging operations, the process for recording of trenches and the production of site reports.

Amy Fisher

Thank you for giving us more tantalizing tidbits on this dig and bravo for for cleaning up the sound issues. The JOY of the discovery is really coming thru. Thanks Derek and Lawrence for the tours. A truly worthwhile subscription.

Mik Firestone

I really would like to see a bit about how the recording is done, how the site is cleaned up and restored at the end, etc. It could be done as a master class. It's a thing that I have wondered about since I started watching TT.

Fern Wilcox

Thanks again for another tantalizing glimpse behind the scenes when everything isn't neat and tidy. And a Viking raid possibility? WOW! Great job everyone! Cheers from Minnesota!

Mac Whatley

This was great. I’m glad to see Derek and Lawrence are gainfully employed in a hole! I think it worked wonderfully to have the team explain themselves, like they have always done on the regular shows. Once Derek and Laurence have done the overall site set up, there’s no need for them to constantly insert themselves as interlocutors. And it was a treat to see Neil Holbrook, looking and talking like old times. I’ve been wondering who was in overall control of the dig, and of course he would be there in his own area.

Dave Decker

Very good to see Neil Holbrook! Great update and thanks again for a great experience.

Stephen Southworth

Yes, it really does show the amount of hard expert work needed to do it properly. Great effort everyone!

Alisdair Artymiuk

Wow, so they've excavated a lot of stuff that isn't villa. Interesting.

Trish Murphy

Happy to see Neil Holbrook. I appreciate you bringing us deeper into the process & progress✌️💚

Amy Singerle

What is a bio archaeologist? I am so interested!! Can you do an interview to find out more?

Marjorie Gillet

Out of all of that, my take-away is that I LOVE Matt's T-shirt. I wonder where he got it. Also, it's so good to see Neil. As commented above, it's very eye-opening to see the vastness of the site. Thank you so much for these videos.

Jeanne Peskett

I wouldn't have needed coercing..... 🙂

Robert Wise

Ohhh look! Derek and Lawrence are digging! Good on you guys! Way to go! Wall! I see a wall behind Matt! Hmm, that looks pretty substantial? It is so good having him back again! Naomi … really curious to see what you found! Neil’s back! This is getting better and better! Thank you Time Team one and all!

Steve Mikre

Can't wait to hear more from Neil and Matt... P.S. Matt's t-shirt is very cool...😂

Steve Jeffery

I thought I spotted Cat in the background in an earlier video, great to see her involved. Anyone interested in archaeology and the Viking age would do well to pick up her book, River Kings. Fascinating stuff.

Robert Boudreau

Love Neil, 1/2 hour left of day three and what does Neil do? Put in another trench! So many times in the past Neil went down to the wire, but got results. So glad to see him.

Pat Szastkiw

I am interested to hear how a villa the size of Buckingham Palace could completely disappear from the surface and from history. How long did the disappearing process take? Are there any historical records mentioning the villa or, later, its ruins?

Graham Dombkins

Time Team, famous for those last day pushes.

Hilary Meehan

Well done! I'm just catching up and it's exciting!

David Boon

How quickly those three days went. Now for the wait for the release of the two episodes. Thanks for all the marvellous updates.

Mark Lund

Yep, great to see Neil, and any of the other regular pros...is Guy d la B. likely to pay a visit?

Andrew Hingston

I think this was very successful piece. It was clear from the first dig that having Lawrence and Derek doing their own recording didn't really work, and once they had their own 'crew' then liberating everyone to do the thing that they are there for makes a deal of sense. If Derek and Lawrence are there as archaeologists then they need to be presented as active members of the TT team rather than spare parts (we know they aren't, but the Dig Watch style rather gave that impression). On the other hand the spirit of Dig Watch is to have a roving camera encountering participants and letting them speak for themselves. Aside from anything else there will be people and activities that do not make it to the final TT production but are integral to the experience. This week we have heard something of the challenges of Dig 1, including the lavatories and the frustrations of poor network signals. A lot of us are very interested in the practicalities of TT. A roving camera can portray these, though some editorial discretion may be needed in what can be shown. I don't think we are too sensitive to not cope with a bit of mild swearing though.

Kathryn

So many more teasers to whet the appetite for what is to come!

Cassista

That was great! Thanks for showing Naomi's setup. Can you provide any photomicrographs she might get for we bio-geeks to enjoy? I would absolutely love to see the documentation of the flotation archaeology and the bioarchaeology. I don't know how many other bio-geeks and barn-geeks are in this Patreon, but you have at least one (me) and I want access to that!

Cassista

Would absolutely love a masterclass with the bioarchaeologist and the flotation archaeologist!

Jude Edling

So pleased to see Naomi's flotation system!!

Karl Miller

I always liked Neils Arms when he spoke.

Kathryn Phelps

The stone was often nicked to build the local Manor house or village. Or in St Albans, for example, the Abbey Cathedral

Jonathan Eisen

Neil hasn't aged a day since the last time we saw him.

Doug Mackey

That is one OLD t-shirt, Matt! I remember it well. And a joy to see Neil—who has aged quite well, I must say! Thank you!

Levy

Yeah that shirt is fun and very lived in.

Levy

Naomi always seems so strict about her work but also good humored. I enjoy her explanations.

Jeanne Peskett

The three days has given us an inkling about the size and scale of this project. Now the initial excavation is finished is there any plan to return, or are any of the local universities( Oxford, Warwickor Birmingham, not Worcester sadly) showing any interest in picking this up for summer school excavations?

Dinah Sanders

Matt's been repping the entirely silly online game Kingdom of Loathing since the original program. I'm delighted by the report overall, but grinning widest at seeing that shirt. An adventurer is you! 🍸😉🗡

Patti McCarthy

Nice teaser! Haha! That is ONE OLD tee-shirt on Mark--anyone have any idea what episode he was wearing that in? lol.
