What an adventure the last few weeks have been! We may all be feeling a bit weary as we draw towards the end of the 3rd day on site of our 2nd dig, but the atmosphere is electric amongst the crew making the final push to answer so many questions of our Roman Villa Site in Oxfordshire.

We can't wait to share the final shows with you all in more detail (details and dates TBC). In the meantime we hope you are all enjoying an exclusive glimpse behind-the-scenes as we follow the journey of Time Team back in the field. You can even take a walk about the site as Derek and Lawrence give you a tour of the trenches and catch up with old and new faces!

Don't forget that this is just the start of a long process with so much more to do on both the film and archaeology elements as Carenza mentioned in yesterday's 'Spoil Heap' session. We will be sharing some more of the post-production and post-dig processes with you soon, as we dive into what happens after Day 3!

Not to mention backfilling it all! Great work everyone, and the quality of this "on the day" material is getting better and better. Everyone is (re-) learning quickly it seems. ❤️ I love Carenza's idea of putting the draft reports up somewhere (read-only) while they are being created. In my day job I spend an inordinate amount of time helping people draft technical documents and the evolution of thinking (what's important, what gets bumped to a footnote, what gets changed as new data arrives; should we commission a bit more analysis here?) really helps with understanding the final document. I often think the revision history should be published with all academic papers these days to help with understanding, avoiding wasting our time on comments and critique that were dealt with implicitly in the drafting process. It may be "the boring bit" now, but don't we love the marginalia and deletions in historic documents for exactly this kind of insight? 😀

James Leighninger

You might remind everyone that support from all of us must continue for future digs! These two must NOT be the end!

Andrey Martovskiy

And ain't it great! I missed live shows of the original Time Team (Would you believe it was airing since I was 5? That's a long journey!). I discovered it only in 2014 when it was already over and a couple of Russian cable channels translated and dubbed several seasons.

Carole Cox

Thank you! So excited for the end results!. Having shared in these two digs really puts the process in perspective!

Hillfort Games

Really glad things are going well with the team! My assumption has always been that these two episodes would serve as pilots to measure interest from the public to use as a pitch for either Amazon or Netflix to fund full series, so I’m really curious to see what’s next.

Simone Fritzen

Honestly, I think that they could kind of "destroy" the creativity and the spirit of Time Team. Of course they do have the money, but I am not sure, if these companies share the values and passion that makes Time Team so special.

Terry Cox

I very much hope that it remains successfully crowd-funded and can freely experiment with advancing new forms of community science. It was the formulaic demands of TV networks that killed it previously, so we really don’t want to end up back in that spiral.

Kevin Mc

I understand what you're saying, but I think these two digs are intended to serve as proof of the viability of Time Team as a series, & hopefully to get the backing of someone such as Amazon or Netflix without losing creative control. Or am I being too much of an optimist ?

David & Ruth Samuels

Great stuff so far — thank you all for letting us be part of it! Lovely to see some old friends and to meet some new ones. We do miss Phil, though — how’s he getting on?

Richard Barnes

Loving the behind the scenes action again team. Just a thought from me, following the discussion about crowd funding activity, what about offering up specific sponsored activity to individuals. Maybe auction activity off, so that an individual can claim ownership to funding a particular activity and be shared unique insight into that activity in return.

Robert Wise

I have that worry too! I hope Time Team can become mostly self-funded (?) so control can stay where it is!

Elise Norwood

A bit off topic, but I never heard the story behind the design of the TT logo. Three profiles and a radiating sun…? Designer, symbolism?

Caroline Borduin

I've been thinking along the same lines. Been thinking about the enormous expense of this work and how much money we Patreons are providing.

Debbie Williams

I can’t wait for the programs…… the on-site bits have whetted our appetites for MORE 🤓

Melinda Nagy

I feel like I have missed so much with the seven hour time difference but am very excited to see the end result of both digs. Will you be showing out-takes at any point so we can see more of the archeological process? As a Classics and Medieval Studies graduate I have always wanted to go on an archeological dig but my health gets in the way. I am working to fix that too. Is there any opportunity to join a dig for patron supporters?

Max Hale

I really can't take to the new presenters. Their style is too casual and lacks an seriousness

Roger Mills

What would be the point? You know what would happen to it. Creative control would be promised but never really granted. The suits would want and get their way. As it is the Team can fit things into their main careers - just how TT started out in fact - and can run things just the way the way they want.

Rowena Sweeney

I realky like them Max, but each to his own ! I have loved this series always. I first heard it when I was lying in bed ill. My 7 year old daughter was watxhing tv in another room. Suddenly I heard this " ooh, ah, jugs, I luv these ! " and thought " what on earth is she watching ?" Well that was 23 years ago and have watched it ever since. I do miss some of the characters in the team, but it's always onwards and upwards. Of course, I never had the privilege of meeting Mick, but I am sure that this 'new' type of presentation is all he could have wished for.. Back to basics, and is the Team and us Patreons who control a lot of this.

Martin Packer

On crowdfunding I thought the point was to have an annual fund that might allow some number of digs, depending on the level of funding. But the finished programmes have to go somewhere - so presumably sold to some TV company. (This assumes the audience is to be broader than just the patrons.)

Wolfgang Zenker

The finished programmes are supposed to be published on youtube, and hopefully will convince more people to support time team on patreon.

Martin Packer

YouTube works for me also. I suppose there will be many people who won't or can't become patrons but that their interest in archaeology will be spurred on by the revival of Time Team. So job still done.

Wolfgang Zenker

I assume you are talking about Derek and Lawrence. They are not the new presenters going on the final show, but instead they are kind of an avatar for the patreons, to keep us informed what is going on at and around the digs. Presenters at he final show will be Natalie and Gus, whom we have so far only seen for a few moments. That said, I'm very impressed with the work of Derek and Lawrence, and I also love what I have seen of Natalie and Gus so far.

Christopher Samuel

I have to say that as well as satisfying my cravings for more TT content I view my participating in this as investing in archaeological education/advocacy for the future so to have them public on YouTube is perfect, especially with the supporting materials and data online as well for those who get intrigued to know more. What I get to see now is really the icing on the cake. So excited to see how these programmes turn out!

Diane S Ratliff

Derek and Lawrence are awesome!!!! I'm sure Natalie and Gus will be amazing. I enjoyed the interview with them. But hopefully Derek and Lawrence will stay around too.

Diane S Ratliff

Yes, great question. I'd like to hear that answer as well.

Diane S Ratliff

Please, please keep TT independently funded as long as possible. Love Amazon and Netflix but all they care about are ratings. What TT does is so much more important. It's not just entertainment. It history, science, archeology presented in a very entertaining way.

Elizabeth Perry

Absolutely loving all that has been shared. Excited to see what more is to come.

JUDITH COOKE

Thank you Tim for masterminding the enterprise. The minutiae of organisation required for getting Time Team up and running again is mind boggling. Deep appreciation for everything you have done. Profound gratitude to the members of the original Team for their commitment to the programme and returning to provide their time, humour, invaluable experience and knowledge. Their presence is absolutely necessary for maintaining the character of Time Team. The programme has enriched our lives for decades and it is so exciting to see it developing a future. Warmest thanks and congratulations to the new members of the Team, in front of and behind the cameras, for their enthusiasm and unique contributions which are essential for succession planning and the long term future of the programme. I wish all of them every success as they find their place. The outcomes have greatly exceeded expectations so far and it is highly desirable that momentum can be continued. It is important that Time Team is inclusive of anyone with a passion for the discipline. Hopefully this will send a powerful message to academia and others that archaeology is valued as the foundation of human culture, history and heritage and should be supported, not sidelined. It has been an amazing privilege to be able to contribute and participate in the resurgence of Time Team. The experience of the last few weeks has been extraordinary and unforgettable. I would feel bereft without occasional bulletins outlining progress over the next few weeks and look forward with joyful anticipation to the presentation of the finished episodes.

Jennifer Giddins

Very much enjoying the footage and all the information. very excited to see the programs

John Riddell

I think I owe you £5 per month after 20+ years of education and entertainment. Happy to see it back with old faces and new - keep on digging.

Hillfort Games

There’s a lot of assumptions being thrown around in these replies about suits and drive for ratings. Amazon already has time team and funds a lot of none-American things without intervention so I’m much less cynical.

Mark Lund

And you can guarantee that if its well received, again, (which means well patronised by us,)it will be bought/funded by a TV company. I hope so as long as they remain committed to stick by Tim's vision. I guess thats all for the future, assuming there remains one.

Noel Bell

I think I deserve a prize for self control and patience for staying out of the way and letting the team get on with the job. I only live a couple of miles away from the dig and am continually driving past on route to my daughter's. The temptation to meander along the local footpaths was almost too much to bear. Thanks a lot team for your efforts in all that you do both on the dig and keeping us informed. Can't wait for all the rest of the details to be released over the coming months.

Lacy Oden

Community involvement was always a big thing… is that not happening anymore? How much more funding do we need to get the community involvement back!?!

Lacy Oden

This is not the show… it’s just a casual behind the scenes look. They are not presenting just showing us around. There is no need to be super formal for a 3 minute video.

Charlie Wood

Where are we supposed to watch the New digs on YouTube. I am a Patreon Member ?

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Martin, Thanks for your question. As explained in previous posts. These first 2 digs that have been funded by Patrons will be available to watch for free on YouTube worldwide. Plus we have a huge amount of extra content to share over the coming months so stay tuned!

TimeTeamOfficial

Yes the final new shows will eventually be shown on YouTube for all to watch for free worldwide. Details and dates are still to be announced.

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Noel, Thank you for your self control and we hope that it will pay off you'll enjoy the final show even more for doing so. We understand it's frustrating but in these current times we have had to take extra precautions to keep the production happening and as safe as possible for all involved. We wish we could invite all our fans and supporters to come and have a look but its just not practical or possible at this current time.

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Lacy, community involvement and the legacy Time Team leave after a dig is so important to us, and we are making a huge effort to prioritise that even more so now! We will be sharing more on this soon, but we had several local groups involved in both of our sites, as well as a visit from a local school too. If possible we hope to continue further investigations at the sites too, working with those that are locally connected and involved in the sites supporting them to discover the most we can about the locations and finds.
