As you've seen over the last two digs, there are many crucial roles on Time Team – but one of the key roles that we rarely get to see is the Director of the episodes. So, without further ado, let us introduce Emily Boulting.

Emily is no stranger to Time Team and has been involved with the show for many years as both a Director and Producer. She directed several fan favourites featured on Time Team Classics, including 'Gold in the Moat' at Codnor Castle and our Cornish adventure on Looe Island.

Emily brings this wealth of experience to our new shows, and while it's a new adventure for us all, we're in safe hands! The digs may now be over, but as Emily explains, her work is just beginning as she begins the task of shaping the footage and data into the final episodes.

Emily explains the next stages in the process and we'll be providing more detail on this in the weeks ahead.

In the meantime, look out for more Dig Watch interviews and insights coming your way!

Nice to the point quick start straight in and Passionate

Diane E. Englot

Very interesting! Really liked this...hope we will hear from her again on how things are progressing...although it sounds like she is going to be VERY busy!

Jack D Stout

Can't wait to see what's in store. And very excited about the potential for "cutting room floor" bonus material. Awesome stuff!

Paul Brekke

I've missed this perspective - thank you for making this video! And very tantalising info regarding all the cut scenes; I'm already imagining "bonus episodes" around both (and future) digs with 3D models, on site interviews and perhaps also post-dig analysis on classes of finds, etc. I'm definitely pitching in for more of that! :)

Zoe Propper

Hello Emily. Loved hearing the process and timescales for reviewing and editing the footage into an episode. Fingers crossed for getting some of those cuttings onto Patreon 🙂

bil Jeschke

Since this will be on-line, will the 1 hour per episode format stay, or will the shows be a bit longer?

Ann Wagner

It’s exciting waiting to find out what those story lines are. And I do hope some smaller stand alone features will be made. This does sound like a very different process than the original shows must have been. Right now, while you are still figuring out the new shape of things, must be quite a creative time.

Jackie Craddock

Thank you to Derek and Lawrence for providing these background snippets. Really enjoying hearing from the whole team and the behind the scenes footage. And..really looking forward to the episodes and hopefully the extras!

Thomas Nyvell

I love what you have produced so far and cant wait until the shows are published. I really hope the comming episodes will bring a lot more people onboard the patreon ship so we can sail towards many more digs together.

Diane S Ratliff

So good to hear more from Emily. Wow, my head was starting to spin just hear all she has been doing and has yet to do. Once again so glad I get to be a part of this wonderful adventure. Great job everyone!

Doug Mackey

So many little clues to assemble!

Donna Holt

Can Emily give us a weekly recap as she is editing? Would love to know what she is taking out and why... without giving anything away ;)

Steve Mikre

I love when Emily said to the guys "I'll see you at the next dig"...

Steve Mikre

That's a great idea. To learn about the editing and narration process would be fascinating...

Derek Thom

So much more to look forward to as well. Well done everyone.

Robin Charlton

It has been great following along so far, and I am looking forward to the two finished shows, but with so much footage available I would love to see some other threads developed. They would not have to be so polished as the Time Team originals, but I am sure that there is plenty of informative and entertaining stuff there.

Fern Wilcox

Again, these behind the scenes snippets, hearing about the "jobs" so many people are doing who don't get into the final programs has been so illuminating and enjoyable. Thank you once again Derek and Lawrence for your part in the programs! Well done all of you. It will be great if a separate show could be put together with some of the finds that don't make the final cut. Of course I see the need for more financial support and we are here and some might just be able to step up to help...Cheers from Minnesota

Helen

Its been wonderful to watch these little snippets and cannot wait for the finished programmes to be shown. Thank you so much

Robert Wise

Good to meet you Emily, and I look forwards both to the final story you assemble, and, hopefully, to hearing something about how it came together in your mind. Thank you Derek and Lawrence … in my mind at least you two are now an essential part of Time Team … and I very much enjoy what you do!

widget brittle

You always know that there are tonnes of people behind the scene doing things, but I really appreciate hearing more about their roles and what they do. And thank you all for the extra time to explain it all!

Mark Lund

May not see the end product until Nov/Dec...Jan!! I cant wait that long...its going to seem for ever. Maybe in time for Xmas. It'll make mine! (as would half a tank of Diesel for an early present!)

Dale Wilson

Oh yes this is going to be good, looking forward to it and for Christmas! wonderful

bil Jeschke

For all the extra footage of the dig, could there be a choose-your-trench type of format, where you could watch a 'best of' selection of footage from just one trench at a time?

Anthony cotton

Just an idea, when the shows are ready for release, why don't you rent a theatre somewhere and have a Premier lol, red carpet the lot lol, maybe sell tickets to patreon members to fill the seats, would be awesome :)

Nina Surr

Since you're doing this for us Patreons rather than for a production company, will you be tempted to scrap the time limit for a televised show and just give us the story in however many minutes it takes to tell the story? There's a tension between making it too slow and detailed for the casual viewer and making it too superficial for the diehards, I know, but I'd argue that you should be able to escape the 53 minute episode length constraint if you have 75 minutes of gripping story and cool finds and fun interactions.

Amy Singerle

This was so interesting. Thanks for sharing with us!!!

Richard Yoast

Seems like time and resources permitting, and supporting finds, one could develop more than one total story line -that would be an interesting attempt since it would also show viewers how archaeology isn't a simple uni-directional effort. sort of a combination of the story of what you were looking for and then found vs. what you found and how that shaped what you were seeing and would want to look for in the future.

Elizabeth Nickless

Has been great to see the behind scenes action, and although we realise lots of effort has gone into every episode of time team, it is great to see how it all works in more detail, can't help but think that Mick Aston would have loved everyone seeing this extra info. It has been exciting to know that while we are here in NZ that exciting things are happening in archeology in the UK while we sleep.

Kathryn

Excellent to meet Emily - especially since she is “old” TT but we didn’t know it then. This whole process has been just fascinating and truly wonderful to be a tiny part of for my ten odd bucks a month! I’m looking forward to the snippets from the cutting room floor and for all of the background pieces ( hopefully) yet to come before the final programs are ready.

Jon Colcord

That was a great little interview! Even with the little self-promoting John Gater video bomb! She had all the answers! (is John now perhaps looking for a quasi-presenter/comedian role?)

Chris Healy

We need "Time Team - The Movie".

Graham Dombkins

Thanks for wearing the various bits of Time Team merch guys. Having seen the bag on an adult I'll be getting one and a few shirts etc as well :-)

Robert Boudreau

As a suggestion, if time and finances allow, perhaps take the scenes that don't make the final cut and do something like "Time Team Villa Dig Outtakes". Or break an episode into two parts. The advantage with YouTube over a network is you really don't have time constraints. I'm sure there's been many times in the past where good bits have ended up on the cutting room floor due to having to fit an allotted time. That's not a concern on YouTube.

Eggs Ackley

Very nice interview! I have suggestion for a brief “how it’s done”. I don’t think TT has ever exhibited the exact process beginning with the initial survey of a site, through the geophys layout/scans, to the marking of a trench. It would be great to see each step that leads to “X marks the spot.”

Patti McCarthy

Great to meet Emily! And learn that TT has always supported women directors!

Kieran Gane

I think we have met the real brains of the operation at last in Emily.

Mark Horn

Great to hear from Emily hope we hear more from her in the future as it’s very interesting seeing how the program is put together. Great short and interesting post 👍

John Matthew IV

This sounds like the opposite to how a movie is written. There you write a script and then film it. Here you film lots of scenes and then write a script. Looking forward to the "Scenes from the Cutting Room floor."

Justin Freeman

Great film, nice to see the bag I use daily modelled on screen!

Jean Buckley

What a charming, competent seeming director! If you need funding to edit some stand alone pieces, you know where to look.

Martha Berryman

To videographers and "scene setting" for interviews. Again, you have our Significant Archaeologist in the shade, with sun on Derek and Lawrence. At least Prof. Linscomb is not in the back of a trangle shoot in Fougou! But I'm baffled at these obscured videos! Photography 101?

Donna Oglesby

The question raised about what happens to what is left on the cutting room floor, I think, is a great idea to maybe make Part 2 of the dig site and put what you can of all that together, for a part 2:-) Not like you don't have a LOT of footage:-).

Donna Oglesby

Will Dr. Phil Harding be coming back at any point??

Peter Hawker

Having followed the posts, clips and conversations. I decided while changimg from monthly to annual subscription, to increase my pledge after seeing all the great work from behind the scenes and in the hope of getting more footage into use, rather than filed away and not used.

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Peter, thanks very much for your ongoing support. We really appreciate it!

Thomas Bougher

Just hearing Phil's comments will be welcome, even if he isn't able to dig, as in the past.

Carl Johnson

Something I'd love to see in the "EXTRAS" is the director's thought process... why did she pick that video of this other one

Joanne Kellam

So didn't I hear Emily say "see you on the next one" at the end? Does that mean there will be more digs, not just these 2?

Michael Prior

I would imagine that as long as this funding continues there should be lots more.
