Our second site in Oxfordshire has two distinct strands, with the Roman villa located on the estate of an equally grand building that dominates the landscape: Broughton Castle.

Derek and Lawrence spent much of Day Two at the castle, carrying out some high-tech archaeology and catching up with historian Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. We'll be sharing more of their adventures around this stunning building in due course. Until then, here's a Spoil Heap session in the grounds with Suzannah.

I know they say all this extra footage will end up on Patreon but why does the program need to kept to an hour? I assume the finished product is for publication on YouTube and not the telly so making a program run an odd length wouldn’t be an issue I would have thought. Anyway great to hear from the brilliant Suzannah Lipscomb as always. 👍

Jack D Stout

I agree with you about the run time. There's no reason the presentation cannot be whatever length the production team deem appropriate. I hope they do that.

Elise Norwood

Such a grand sweep: “recent history…since 1300.” Now that really does put things in perspective!

Robert Wise

I’m glad Professor Lipscomb is back! Her knowledge, ability to find information, and her interpretive skills are a very positive addition to Time Team. Several interesting stories here! The manor, the villa, one ancient and abandoned / one still in use, the dig itself, why this site was chosen for both homes … Maybe the manor and villa deserve an hour each (at least) … and, since it will be on YouTube … why not? I like the contrast between the two forms of archaeology … unearthing and vertical!

Diane S Ratliff

I imagine it has a lot to do with budget. Nothing about making a program is cheap.

Mark Horn

This is just in reply to Diane S Ratliff who commented to my original post. I suspect you’re correct about the cost of producing extra run time. I should have probably added to my original post that I didn’t mean to infer adding more than say 5 - 10 minutes if it improved the overall quality of the finished product.

I would love to see Directors' Cuts!! - maybe with Commentary? Hopefully at the level I can afford! Might I suggest a "wish list" of products that Time Team need that supporters can buy directly and donate? ( i.e. memory cards, wireless mic covers, ring lights, tripods, etc...) I see this often on YouTube channels and it's a popular way for fans to see what they've contributed in use, maybe even hear or see their name. I loved seeing us on the site, and waving on the flags!

Ann Wagner

I am wondering if there is a connection between the villa and the house . How did this place come to be so wealthy and important twice?

John Matthew IV

Broughton Castle does not look like a Roman villa to me.

Trish Murphy

Well this made my day. Confirmation that we will see archeology & video that doesn’t make the 1 hour official, episode. 👏👏👏 I needed that boost today ✌️💚

Mark Howell

Why the 1 hour limit for the edited program? Why not 1.5 or 2 hours? There's no TV time slot to fit into. Would a longer program be more expensive?

Jon Colcord

I imagine that it could be to keep it in line with what you actually see on television. I heard buzz early on that if the opportunity to have Time Team picked up again in that way came, that these shows might act as the audition for such a thing. I mean, Patreon is fab, but will it go on forever? Will the big network money man come calling again at some point? It could happen, and if the opportunity to have that kind of big budget again came, I imagine Tim would jump at it.

Peter Lee

Perhaps we could have everything? 1) the standard 1 hour show 2) Patreon stuff online for members only 3) a dvd version with extended footage, extra contents, interviews and bloopers. I would totally pay for the dvd. Just a thought.

Matthew Hauck

As if I needed incentive to watch a TT video, you put Prof Lipscomb's name in the title, and you have my full attention.

Don Cook

Nice! All of this is dream come true!

Fern Wilcox

I feel like I spent and hour with my favorite professor as Dr. Lipscomb's enthusiasm comes shining though and leaves me with even more anticipation for the upcoming programs, (as if I could be any more excited). Well done. Again. I loved Peter Lee's comment about a pay-for DVD. - see above. Cheers from Minnesota

Fern Wilcox

Peter, I love your DVD suggestion!

Elaine P

I second (or third?) this combo idea, especially the addition of a DVD.

Rowland Willets

It’s 2021 - I’m pretty sure they are filming in Hi-Def video (which more suitable for a Blu-ray. release)

Rowland Willets

It would probably be easier to have three episodes - one per “day”. Each could easily be up to, say, an hour long (even without any of the Patreon extras)

Bron Lloyd

Brilliant! Suzie is one of my favourite historians and I was thrilled to hear she would be part of this :)

Dr Richard Mellish

I echo the "Why the 1 hour limit" comment. But also, why stick to the fixed 3-day period for the actual excavations (even granted that there is additional time before and after)? Is the limit finance or are there other logistical reasons for the three days?

Andy H

All these people have full time jobs

Mechanical Muse

It sounded to me like the final presented product will be 1 hour, but there is an expectation that they'll share a good amount of the additional content with Patrons. This seems like a decent approach to me.

Debbi Stott

Loving all this background insight, and can I say thank you for moving from phone cam to something a little more robust and less prone to wind! I really love watching your Spoil Heap, trench visits and snap interviews and don't want to miss a word of the wisdom you are able to share with us.
