This year, we're going to be dropping in on various archaeological projects that Time Team's friends and family are involved with.

Earlier this month, Dani Wootton paid a visit to Dartmoor National Park, in the county of Devon in South West England, where a team from Plymouth University are digitally scanning an historic farmhouse to create a 3D game environment.

Higher Uppacott is a Grade I listed, thatched Medieval longhouse, with origins dating back to the mid-14th century.

The Plymouth team includes Matt Clark, who joined Time Team's recent digs to create 3D models of finds and features at both sites (you may have seen some of his amazing Sketchfab models here on Patreon).

This technology is increasingly playing a crucial role in recording historic structures, while enabling a wider audience to experience them remotely.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be following the story of Higher Uppacott, including progress on the 3D modelling exercise, and a tour of the longhouse with Time Team's historic buildings expert, Dr Richard Parker.

Special thanks to Matt Clark, the staff and students of the University of Plymouth, Dartmoor National Park Authority and Gareth Allen.

Great stuff! It’s like Time Team, but not exactly Time Team! Keep them coming!

Thanks for that Dani! Did the Romans build in Dartmoor? Dartmoor brings Holmes to mind … but in his later adventures with Mary Russell as written by Laurie R. King.

Thanks Mike, more to come on this as the project develops, including our own chat with Dr Richard Parker.

Thanks Jon. We think that's one of the great things about today's approach. The team have always been involved in a range of fascinating projects and specialisms in their day jobs. As well as the traditional 3-day digs, there's much more scope now to share these wider complementary activities that are already ongoing throughout the year. More on the way!

Thank you for that link! Sounds like there were at least a couple of Roman roads built, a lot of probable river traffic, and at least one villa! I’d love to see Time Team add a new chapter to this Dartmoor story!

Caroline Borduin

I will totally play this game! Hoping we get all the info on it as time goes by.

An interesting project, even though I am not a game player. Well done, Dani and the Plymouth Team.

Jenna Tomlin

I am really excited to see this game when it comes out. Please keep us informed when this goes live?

What is that handheld scanner he's using? I have a Leica BLK and Matterport Pro 2... but that thing would be useful!

Shop Dog

If you where to upload the scanned farm house into a game like VR chat a free game platform currently found online it would allow people to visit the house in vr.

David Boon

Excellent use of technology to make history accessible. It would be great to have this applied to archaeological sites to allow people to explore them. The fogou site springs to mind as one that might be able to utilise this technology.

Robert Boudreau

Thank you Dani, very interesting. Besides the look at what can be done these days with modern technology, I found the bit about burning bits of the structure to try and ward off fire fascinating. It adds such a human element to the structure, that in it's survival it also contained a glimpse at the beliefs of the people who once occupied it. A great reminder they aren't just buildings, they were homes.

Andrea Sutton

I love seeing projects like this. One of these days I'll get a VR set so I can visit sites like this virtually without being a disruptive tourist.

Marc Steenbergen Netherlands

VR sets are still pricey but really cool and get better all the time. For example the hand recognition improves with every occulus software version update. => Hardware stays the same but on account of Machine learning the sortware gets better! :-)

Ken Simpson

All this is great and as a distant friend in Canada I love getting these updates keep up the great work

Matt Cummins

Yes, they are fantastic the burn marks, aren't they?
