Dr Newton has landed... and so has our final Site Walkabout of the dig, direct from the field!

Unfortunately, word got around the site that Derek and Lawrence are genuine, actual archaeologists, and so they got coerced into opening a new trench. But that didn't stop us from delivering our Site Walkabout courtesy of the new roving mic!

What you've seen so far is just a small fraction of the amazing footage we've captured over the weekend. We have lots more antics, interviews, mini masterclasses and other insights to follow in the weeks ahead, so please stay with us as the action continues.

This is amazing coverage! Can I pay £100/day next year to fill in ruts and cart wheelbarrows around?!?

Priscilla Reeve

That was really great! Please do it like this more often. I could have done with translation from Sam, though.

Jill Bray - Author

Great to see Dr Sam Newton again and love the Anglo-Saxon lyre playing to start the footage. Also, so nice to see Helen looking and sounding more happy and positive - did she give a small spoiler about finding the burial of a rich lady? 😊

Cathy Martichenko-Grilz

Excellent coverage! It is so nice to be introduced to other people on the dig. Greetings from Canada…

Mike Darby

Wow! .... what a brilliant Site Walkabout, you can feel the buzz! Sounds like we have another blinding episode to look forward to, I can't wait .....

Jakub Jůzl

This format was actually surprisingly great, just letting the people talk. 🤔 Props to roving mic guy! I was very pleased seeing Dani again too. Wish I could visit the dig sometime...

Robert Wise

Love the floating microphone! Is there a translation of Dr Newton’s masterful presentation? (That was a lovely new twist!) I enjoyed hearing from the crew members: Jimmy - What’s useful software for imposing Geophys data onto a map of the topography of a site? Emily … the dig watch episodes are getting better and better! Congratulations Leah! Did they put you to work? Matt is exceptional at describing his trench to a "T" in the vaguest possible terms! Go Matt! Steve the DOP, how do you cope with the shadows? You’ve been with TT from the start? Holy cow that’s awesome, congratulations! John … umm, that had to be the briefest data presentation I’ve ever seen! Naomi … do major climate episodes like drought ever show up in your work?

Ann H

Love the moving mic. Has its own "life" now. Needs a name. And congrats to contest winner Leah from VT from me, Ann, on Cape Cod.

Ann Wagner

This is so exciting! Looks like it will make a great story!

Kate

Dr. Sam Newton - Britain's Got Talent! One of my favorite things about TT is the unabashed joy of letting rip with your expertise, whatever it may be. Maybe Sam's efforts should be called experiential archeology. Totally charming. (Once, my daughter who teaches 19th century melodrama showed up to her class as Snidley Whiplash of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame. Her students never forgot the content that lecture...)

Sandy Mccrone

I’m glad Sam was introduced. I thought it was John beguiling us with his hidden talent. Love this format. Great fun!

gary hipkiss

always a pleasure to see and love the work these ppl do to bring us a great history insight. Amazing what you can find in a field and how much history can be gained from it. Can't wait to see the episode come to us. Thanks guys

James Leighninger

Now that was great! Derek and Lawrence, take note! More hints leaked out this time, too!

Ann H

It's a girl. Patronia because she speaks to us.

William Butler

I’ve noticed Helen has been giving us the most info. Great to see the contest winner there.

Julie Siefke

Brilliant alternative format! And Derek and Lawrence got to hold trowels instead of mics. Win-win!

Susan Strangman

I love these site tours. Now to rush and, hopefully, I won’t be late for work. 😜😜

Matthew Rice

Helen seems much happier today! No doubt that bodes well for the final show! It’s gonna be hard to wait for the episode to come out!

Steve Mikre

I loved every minute of this dig watch vlog...👍

Graham Stokes

Well done! Rewarding to see people introduce themselves and give us a taste of their interest, background, and activity on the site. We can tell you are busy. Quite lively and well paced! This builds enthusiasm for the more that is to come!! Thank you , all!

Don Cook

Brilliant video!!! And; thank You, Sam--loved it!! any chance You could give us a translation, or a link to one???

Stitch

Always exciting on the third day. Stewart most likely found a depression somewhere that dated from the Stone Age.

Christopher Samuel

That was great, thank you! Someone needs to tell John that YouTube lets you pause the video. ;-)

Kay Theriault

That was fun and different! Sounds like there's going to be a lot of exciting finds and data coming out of this site and that means I can't wait for the epsodes to be released in the spring! <3

Kerry Hennigan

Terrific... I certainly envy the competition winner from Vermont. Congrats!!!

Conan Mills

Based off of the last few episodes, they have been using qGIS to overlay data. I use it too and it's fantastic once you get used to using it. The best part is, it is open source and free to use. I have used it to build 3D models of sites overlaying total station and magnetic gradiometry data.

John VanAntwerp

I liked the format of passing the mic. Nice tough!

Eggs Ackley

I’m ready to hear Sam’s cover of “Aethelred’s Blues.” Paul can accompany him on the pots.🪘🪘

Jon Zephanius

Now THAT is an INTRO. Where's Paul Blinkhorn though? I know he's there but haven't seen him featured anywhere!

Alan

The Anglo-Saxons liked a good riddle. Let’s hope Time Team find the solution.

Pamela Brotherton

Great site walk about! I really enjoyed hearing from everyone!

Lorna Dryden

I adore Helen and am always happy when I see her at a sight!!!

Donna Oglesby

LOVE Dr. Newton, and OMG so great to see him again.. Remember he spoke this language once before on on e of the older Time teams, when he had Phil and Matt argue about which shovel was better! I hope we see more of Dr. Newton, he is a real treasure and a walking book of history!.

Anja Adam

I'm quite sure Dr. Newton gave us the full story in Old-English ;)

JUDITH COOKE

YES! That was absolutely fabulous. I loved it. So exciting to see all the people giving us the benefit of their experience.

Charles Weager

Hi All, I must be a trifle thick but I am not getting a feel for the site in terms of layout, and seeing more of the activity. The snippets I am seeing aren't giving me much of a picture more of two blokes saying silly things. I appreciate the Gus Heyford interview segment but surely the overview of the individuals should have been earlier in teh weekend. So what am I missing?

Derek Thom

Nice to see the new mics and improved sound quality on the various walkabouts. Much appreciated.

Kerry Neal

The main programme is yet to be edited that’s all. It’ll be a few weeks before the main programme I think.

James D Speckart

Charles, I understand where you are coming from, and I don't disagree that these little pieces could be helped with a bit more narrative/instructional framing. But the Time Team crew is focusing first on making a traditional TV program about the dig, and they are thinking about preserving the narratives and surprises for when the edited programs are released in a few months. So these tidbits can feel a bit limited. I suppose they could also go completely the other direction on the Patreon offerings and try a "new media" approach of raw, unedited 24/7 access to the whole dig, but that effort would require resources that they'd rather put into the edited program. I agree that these pieces could be more open and expressive, but I'm glad Time Team is spending some of their time giving us bonus material during their digs. It's really 3 days of little teasers for the edited programs to come.

Jude Edling

This is the best site tour so far. From the musical introduction to the hilarious follow the microphone to hearing so many people talk about their Time Team experience. Thank you!

Ian Cade

I agree to an extent, Charles. I appreciate that the communications of the finds and information from the site have to be very carefully managed . However, there has been almost no content on anything that has been found. Surely something of a less sensitive nature could have been included as a taster. Here's geophysics that you can't see and a trench that you can't see and finds that we can't tell you about does wear a little thin. Disclosing some sherds of interesting pottery, for instance, aren't l likely to blow the project open. Where I disagree is that I thought the two blokes did very well given their constraints.

Mike Lowndes

Agree more Paul please! Not heard his new voice yet... (will miss his dulcet tones - but being alive is good).

Charlotte Humphreys

Great video! I really enjoyed hearing everyone's take on the site. More Sam please!

Ingrid Mayer

That was a great walk about very interesting and tantalising. I think it great if Derek and Lawrence would be the presenter at the next show! They do a wonderful job.

Hunt

Brilliant mix in this one. Really nice to see Sam back, and to hear from Steve about his work on the cameras.

Sharyle Doherty

That was really fun! Lovely to meet so many of the people involved.

Paul Brekke

I was surprised, after having watched the other videos where everyone's been really cagey and circumspect about what's going on, to hear Helen talk rather openly about some of the major aspects of the dig! This video should possibly have a "spoiler alert" attached to it? That said, I LOVE the site walkabouts, and this latest video format was a fun, fresh take! :) Can't wait to see the finished episode(s)!! :-)

Charles Weager

I understand, this is my first Time Team with Patreon and I feel quite flat and I dont feel that I have seen or been involved with anything. I dont even feel teased. I would have expected some meat, sorry veggies, and as I am sure that a lot of the filming will end up on the cutting room floor some could have been issued. I thought that these communications were to make us feel part of what is taking place as it happens, a form of involvement. While I dont mind the light hearted banter that is all I got. As I have an interest(Mynchin Buckland) I hope the Knights Hospitallers will make me feel happier.

Mark Baker

One hopeful fun fact. Modern (non organic farming) uses non plough techniques. Weed control is undertaken using glyphosate which is safe. Ploughing releases carbon into the atmosphere and destroys archaeology.

TimeTeamOfficial

We'll see if we can get a translation from Sam. If we remember correctly he was performing an extract from Beowulf.

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Charles, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Joining us on Patreon brings you into a process that is ongoing, and we still have much, much more behind-the-scenes coverage of the dig to share. For a range of reasons (logistical, editorial and otherwise), there are limits on how much can be shared immediately as it unfolds in the field. Certain sensitive details (the exact location and other key locators, for example), can only be revealed after the shoot, in order to respect the confidentiality and security of the landowners/tenants, the smooth-running of production for the main episode, and in order to do full justice the archaeology. What the insights so far have hopefully illustrated is what a large and complex operation it is conducting an archaeological dig and producing a film production. This is the start of the excavation journey, and the really exciting prospect is what lies ahead as more of the story emerges. Over the weekend, we've recorded a wide range of interviews, mini masterclasses and other insights, including the progress of our community test pits, which are still all to come right here on Patreon, in the lead up to the completed episodes. Thanks for joining us and hope you enjoy everything that follows. Best wishes from all the team.

Donna Holt

After the interview with Gus, I spent this episode noticing everyone's fashion!

Carl Johnson

Those where some great interviews. It was great to see all the people working on making Time Team a success.

Leah Kotok

They did put me to work! I got to clean off one of the trench surfaces, scrub some finds, and I even did a bit of flotation with Naomi.

Leah Kotok

Thanks, Ann! It was a thrill to be there!

Ann H

Hah, I wasn't jealous until "flotation with Naomi" surfaced. Fascinating stuff.

Ann H

Anglo-Saxon Cemetery on Halloween? What fun that would be. Music by Sam. Always hopeful.

Jo Donaldson

What a great bunch of people! So interesting.

Elaine P

Thoroughly enjoyable, as always, as are the intriguing hints we get...

Rosemary Henderson

Loved hearing the DoP's comments - that's real behind the scenes stuff.

Kara Cunningham

LOVE the roving mic. Love seeing all the different perspectives while it is happening. Love that an American won the contest! So jealous. But it shows that the colonists love Time Team!
