It's time for another 3D model, on this occasion of the beautiful Halston Chapel, created by Adam Stanford using aerial photogrammetry. The trees around the chapel have been removed digitally, giving us a closer look at the building and its immediate surrounds.

This chapel is the only building currently standing on the site of the possible Knights Hospitaller preceptory - but is it a later addition to the landscape or is there a direct link to the Order that once resided in the area? Maybe Time Team's investigation will help to resolve that question in due course...

Ooh, I like that one. You can really see how the boundary ditch works to create a parcel of land that has a specific function.

2026-09-08 22:00 wow, Adam you are a digital master! the photogrammetry shows the detail great, ...the history of the chapel should be fun to unpick, a load of different construction styles, methods and materials. Is the haha contemporary,.. is the stone fly bridge contemporary to the haha, is the tower contemporary to the chapel.. so many questions!!

Is the 21st century word for a 'haha' a 'LOL'?

Is there still going to be a 3rd dig this year??

Wulf Corbett

Can we download files to print these ourselves (without the textures, naturally)?

I was always facinated by the Hospitallers. I had visited many Hospitaller places in the UK and Europe. Then I found out that my ancestors helped fund them and after, helped create the Teutonics (another Hospitaller order). Genetic memory? I was quite shocked. So I am facinated by this work.

Yes, and the retaining wall I find particularly elegant; it must have been a tremendous amount of work.

Graham Stokes

A worthy construction-and much appreciated.

It looks like the bottom of the wall adjacent to the tower is different from both the tower itself and the rest of the nave. Looks to me like remains from an earlier building phase, possibly without a tower and with a wider nave or with a connecting cloister.

I didn't realize they'd put a brick bell tower onto a timber building. Were they built in different phases?

We've actually produced a series of images from this model looking at the spectral values of the material captured within the imagery. When false colour imaging is applied to such data the varied structural components of the chapel really stand out - it would be great to post some of it up here!

I was just wondering about that, do you know if ditches like this had a practical function or are mainly symbolic?
