May's Riso print line art ~ Bug Fairy / And Demon Print preview for Giant Robot! (Patreon)
Content
Hey everyone! I'm almost finished with the line art for the bug fairy! I'll be starting on color for the Riso tomorrow and hopefully printing early next week. Can't wait to send this one out to May's patrons (aka anyone who paid on May 1st). Will share all the Riso process as I make proofs and edits!
Here are some little close ups and the inspiration board I've been referencing while I work.
My intention is to print this in blue, fluorescent pink and yellow so I can have a full range of colors with my 'faux cmyk' palette. I drew this line art in blue so I could get a sense of how light the blue line art would look and where I needed to make the line art clearer if it was too light.
I've been super into these Matijila poppies that have been popping up around my neighborhood. They look like giant eggs that are made of crepe paper! And there are always lots of bugs surrounding them so I had to give this fairy some little buggy friends. I like that this fairy has antennae- I originally gave her little demon horns like the winter/chestnut fairy but after some redrawing I decided it was more fun if she felt like a little bug too. half-bug/half-fairy!
I wanted to draw the flowers in various states of blooming to really get a sense that this is a Springtime fairy scene and the world is just beginning to be filled with flowers and lush green again. Really excited to jump into color and make these eggy poppies come to life.
UMMM speaking of eggy poppies...I'll be a part of the Demon show this weekend at Giant Robot and they asked me to submit the hat I made with a little devil on it...so I made a tiny print to go along with it! These will debut this weekend at Giant Robot and then I'll have them up in my shop. They'll also be heading out to the ++Support tiers for May as well! Excited to be able to share this new print with some extra special patrons <3 thank you!
This guy is printed in fluorescent pink, yellow and federal blue to make a JUICY deep neutral purple that I'm very VERY obsessed with. It shows the Riso texture so well, and some imperfections in the drums as well! It's a lot of ink cover so the rollers are a bit unhappy with me right now. That's where that dry kind of texture comes from. But I'm happy with a little variety in this print, it feels very tactile.
I also LOVE the chromatic aberration in the eggs and how you can really see the colors I used within the whites of the eggs.
I mean look at that. So cool. I want a massive print of just this. You can also really see how Riso makes those dots to create full pieces in the image below. Pretty cool!
If you're in Los Angeles and can head over to the West Side, Giant Robot will have the show at GR2 so it's a special little exhibition! We'll be dressing up a little bit, costumes encouraged! Should be a good time. Here's the flyer if you'd like to attend!
