another black and white classic nice always wanted to give this a watch ,,..can i recommend my favorite black and white movie ,seven samurai ,one of the best movies ever ..other excellent black and white movies that im not sure if youve watched is the first sin city ,raging bull ,ed wood,the hustler ,cape fear (the original from 1962) and i was gonna say schindler's list but i do have a vague memory of watching that with you i believe that was one of the first movies that got me into your channel

The movie is not about a real story but is a lose play on Icarus, who flew too close to the sun. Think of it like. The lighthouse light = the sun Pattinson = Icarus Ending = what happens when you touch what you’re not meant to

Leo! You’re putting out some top notch h content lately. You’ve also come a long way in terms of understanding movies on a deeper level. You were right about the Greek mythology in the film. Wake and Howard are supposed to symbolize Proteus and Prometheus. Recommend looking that up if you don’t know too much about it. You should check out more Robert Eggers. The Witch (2025) and Nosferatu (2024) would be great for October, if not before.

It pulls from mythic sources like Icarus, but it’s not a strict one to one. Dafoes chacacters is read as a mix of mythological characters/archtypes, a couple examples: Proteus. His character directly references Proteus, the old sea god who Guards knowledge of the sea, Is shape-shifting and elusive, Must be wrestled with to reveal truth. Others see him as Poseidon, his curse monologue sounds like a divine punishment speech, he exerts absolute authority over the sea and over winslow. When he curses Winslow, it’s framed almost like a god condemning a mortal. Also like Filby says Prometheus

Very dark... always love B&W Films. This reminded me of an old classic by Ingmar Bergman called "The Seventh Seal", twisted with Alfred Hitchcock and The Outer Limits. The cinematography in this was well done to give you that feel of the film being much older then it actually is. It also felt as if it was pulling from a few different mythos's of the old world. Great performances.

The first Wes Anderson film I saw was The Grand Budapest. Its one of my favorite films, I just love everything about it. Then I saw The Phoenician Scheme, expecting to love it. It's one of the worst movies I have seen. This fits perfectly with what I have heard, that some love W.A while others do not. Split right down the middle lol.

I recently heard a story about lighthouse keepers and how arduous the job is. Solitary, isolated for extensive periods of time, have to go up and down the stairs several times a day to keep the light lit, maintenance of and around the lighthouse, limited food supplies. It was wild and I see why people went mad.
