Lestat’s complete unravelling/breakdown at trying to rationalise his relationship with Gabriella to Louis - when he himself has only just started to come to terms with the abusive aspect - was genuinely one of the most heartbreaking and uncomfortable moments of television I’ve ever seen ☹️ Lestat literally throwing up when Louis explicitly spells out their dynamic made me tear up, and that panic attack was so visceral “You’re being very judgey.” HE IS! The writing on this show, how you got me siding with the guy sleeping with his mum? Obv not actually taking sides, it’s two incredibly complex characters with so much love for each other but also so much history and baggage. Louis’ extremely reasonable initial freakout vs his apology and attempt at actually understanding why this is happening after he sees Lestat breakdown (and get called on his on sh*t lol) 😮‍💨 WRITING!! SOMEBODY better be starting the Emmy campaigns because there should be a LOT of nominations, like… need And the term you’re looking for is “Star-crossed lovers” 😅😭

1. The revenge porn scene was so hard to watch for me! Not only is Lestat barely coming to terms with his mom’s abuse of him, now the entire world and Louis know about it. And the way he looked so small in that video too. Louis was essentially victim blaming him but it is very in character for him. Lestat having to defend himself (even though he’s the victim of both the SA and the revenge porn)mid panic attack was also heartbreaking. Liked the growth of Louis comforting Lestat and not centering someone else’s trauma around him. But yea that entire panic attack was a hard watch, still can’t see that entire scene cause once again Lestat’s rape is being told without his consent, only this time with video proof 🫠 2. The other hardest scene was Claudia’s scene… Delainey Hayles deserves every award for that scene she absolutely killed it. With Claudia, S1/2 and even this season made it explicit how much Louis sees her as an extension to him (him letting Armand rip pages off of her diary, letting Daniel read her diaries, killing Bruce and reading her diary to him, and then paying a lookalike to play Claudia). He stripped her off her agency in his narration because he never handled her being her own person well. 3. Claudia got to hate Lestat without abandon (also an interesting call back to Lestat asking Gabrielle “why wont you let me hate you?” To Lestat saying “bring on your malice” to Claudia). She got to humiliate and murder him and take a lot of her anger out on him. As an audience, we saw 2 seasons of her hate for him. But she had to carry Louis with her until her death (where he still lied to her about her birth in her last moments). So all her anger is finally coming out now. She got to tell him exactly why she was the best vampire of them all and show Louis that she had agency and she fought all of them till her last breath! 4. Every vampire around her failed her and refused to see her resilience. If Lestat could’ve stopped choosing Louis to see how similar they were, if Louis could’ve confronted his self-hatred/Catholic guilt without making her his punching bag, if Armand could’ve seen her for her monstrosity and not her connection to Lestat/her age, she could’ve still been here. 5. Lestat/Louis/Claudia really love each other as a family. But the tragedy is Loustat will always choose each other over any and everybody else, and Claudia will always hate them for that. For bringing her into that dynamic “roof shingle that flew over their house”. 6. Also the Claudia scene is verbatim from the book! Only difference is I’m pretty sure she tries to stab Louis as well. Claudia was a manifestation of Anne Rice’s grief over her daughter passing so she was always a “doomed” character :( quite heartbreaking

What’s interesting about the Claudia scene where the writers are concerned is: you have the script, you have Delainey who was allowed to ad-lib off the Claudia scenes, you have some of the dialogue from season 1 where Claudia called Lestat ‘Massa’ and referred to herself and Louis as slaves… And then you look at the selfishness of Louis and add to his incredible wealth and emotional baggage. Is Claudia reminding him that he’s Black with these insults? One of the bonds they had in addition to being fledglings? There’s so much to unpack there. I don’t know about the writers. There were two in season one and one in season two. And I wonder about the idea that only Black writers should measure what’s appropriate for Black characters. But even if Black writers are in the room, does that absolve a room writing about racism if it’s done poorly? Would we be more accepting of the dialogue if there were Black people in the room? I don’t know. But I also question the Black gaze POV of Louis versus the white gaze of Lestat. I could go all day with this. Long story short, Louis read Claudia’s diary, then gave the diary to Daniel, then read pages of it to Bruce. And as you said, she spent decades with him while Louis talking to Lestat’s ghost and catting around the man who would architect her downfall. Ugh. Does Lestat even deserve Claudia’s attention? Anyway, if you read all of this, you’re kind. Thanks.

1. The first time I heard Lestat sing Brutal Love (and The Loneliness) was when I saw him perform it live at the premiere, he's just as talented and magnetic irl as he is in the show! Also it's very funny to me that it was a little unclear at first if he was singing to Gabs or Louis because at the premiere Sam Reid's actual gf (or maybe wife idk) was right in front of Jacob Anderson and he was def looking in their direction during brutal love.

Claudia says Lestat is her favorite because "he knew who he was". It seems to me that in Claudia's eyes: Lestat was terrible, but at least he made that clear. Louis, on the other hand would act like he was on Claudia's side when he often wasn't. He would let Lestat treat Claudia horribly ("He treats us like shit and you take it why is that?! s1e5). He agreed to go along with Claudia's plan to kill Lestat but at the last minute he threatened her into leaving Lestat alive (s1e7). He didn't tell Claudia that Armand knew that they killed Lestat and dismissed Claudia when she said that Armand threatened her (s2e4). He lied about Claudia's turning, basically claiming it was all on Lestat. But Lestat revealed during the trial that Louis begged Lestat to turn Claudia in exchange for never leaving Lestat. And Louis continued to claim that he was telling the truth and that Lestat was lying. (Claudia: "It's all lies right?" Louis: "Yeah, it's all lies", s2e8). And she's had to carry this shit for seven decades.

2. I loved the way Louis and Lestat interacted in this ep so much, I totally agree that it made it way easier to see how they could've been together for as long as they were. I also feel like the Gabriella reveal honestly went way better than I thought it would in terms of Louis being able to move past the initial (very understandable) visceral reaction that he had and realize that it was a very complicated, very traumatic, very abusive situation that Lestat needed to be supported through rather than shamed and judged for. One of my favorite moments was when Louis asked Lestat to put blood in his drink, to me it gave the vibe that that was something they used to do regularly and was just so sweet and intimate. And Louis being excited for Lestat to sing for his fans in the car. Over all it seemed like a much softer, more loving, more affectionate Louis than we've seen in most of their scenes together.

Sara

Thank you for sharing your reaction, always value your perspective! I struggled with the seance scene too, even though it is in the book. For me the thing that clicked that level of vitriol for Louis was that she basically learned the truth about her turning right before her death (Louis' role in it). That building up for the time she clearly spent watching over him, if she knew everything that was happening with him (reminds me of how after she left she followed Louis around because time had no meaning otherwise)...that's a lot of anger. As for Lestat...I mean, she laid a pretty affecting blow on him with the train scene. He's been crashing out about it all season. (Not a criticism at all btw -- GOOD FOR HER. DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO TO GET OUTTA THERE.) She convinced the love of his life that he would do that, got him tossed out with the trash, and humiliated him how she wanted to. Personally I think the "favorite" thing was a jab about Louis continuing to go over her diaries (where she called Louis her favorite at one point). Also something this show continues to emphasize is the very thin line between love and hate. I don't think hating Louis means she didn't also love him. Otherwise, she wouldn't have felt so betrayed. Sorry for the length of this comment!

The Claudia scene was so so so tough to watch. Cause I did NOT expect her to come in that hard on Louis 😭 but it’s not super surprising, this is the first time we’ve scene Claudia outside of Louis’ POV, his rose-tinted glasses etc, outside of her diaries which Daniel says in season 2 that she had strong opinions on Louis after his failure to commit to killing Lestat, so I can see how this could be her true feelings all along. Two men who are the reason she died (the first time), who then chose to turn her into a monster and trap her in a child’s body for decades, a choice which put a restriction on every aspect of her life, as a way to try and save their own failing relationship, and then the moment she does find a piece of happiness for herself, her and her lover are used as pawns and killed (again) in a grand theatrical production targeting her two evil gay dads 😬 It’s ROUGH! And she also validates a lot of fans concern with Louis reading her diary pages to Bruce - using her as a vehicle for his anger, and her own private words as weapons against her abuser. “Burn these diaries! Burn this dress! Stop! Saying! My! Name!” 😰 chills Your reaction to that scene, just open-mouth, silent shock and horror 😭😭 VERY me, minus my tearing up when she was crying out for Madeline ☹️whole room was gagged!!

Gayle McGowan

I don't think that criticism about a female character dying to further the story of men is justified in this particular case. I can see how people would think that if they are not familiar with the source material. That can be waged at a lot of shows that are pure fiction and the plot choice is unnecessary or something else could have happened. Anne Rice however, based the character of Claudia on her 5 year old daughter who died of cancer. Lestat is based on her husband and she is Louis. The first book is essentially about two parents grieving the death of their child so Claudia was always going to die. In the books, Claudia is also 5 years old when turned into a vampire. Forever a child because theirs never got to grow up. She was an on/off catholic and her husband I believe was not religious. He wanted to stop streatment when it became clear their daughter was dying and there was no hope so she wouldn't have to suffer and live out the rest of her life in a hospital. Anne wanted to keep trying in hopes of a miracle. Needless to say, when she wrote IWTV she was angry with her husband, god, the world, etc. She regretted how she protrayed Lestat so when she wrote TVL 9 years later, she introduced the unreliable narrator to redeem Lestat's character. It's also why Louis largely disappears from the books and is basically in the background and Lestat is the main protaganist henceforth. She aspired to be like Lestat and didn't want to be like Louis.

claire

3. Delainey deserves alllllll the Emmy's for that!!! I was also really shocked on my first watch, but I think the reason she was so much harder on Louis was because she feels pretty much the same way about Lestat as she did the last time they interacted. She knows that he's not expecting any kind words from her. Her feelings about Louis have changed though after 80 years of watching him make her life and her death all about him and Lestat. She's rightfully angry at him and lashing out by saying the things that will hurt him the most. Also, Claudia kept writing in diaries until madeleine became a vampire (the last words she wrote were "fuck these vampires") but none of her diaries are present during season 1 episode 6 when Louis tells Daniel about the train scene. It's just Louis telling Daniel what Claudia told him and she definitely had motivation to lie so she could get Louis to go along with her plan to kill Lestat. As Lestat said in season 2, "she's an artful predator." I do wonder how much of it she made up though. Did she get on the train at all? Did she get on it and then decide on her own to go back home and kill Lestat? Did Lestat actually go find her on the train to try to get her to come home but just not threaten her? Did he threaten her, but not about that?

lestat seems to actually care a LOT about humans, and not just in terms of the reviews and critics of his music! i mean, he is (mostly) kind to his bandmates (rip larry lol), he cared a lot for christine and dee, he’s always polite with dr. fareed. so the whole band turned but lestat turned tc, sam turned salamander, and gabriella turned alex. louis was bored as hell in those 77 years with armand OF COURSE his ass was watching degrassi lmfaooo i could be wrong but i thiiiink jacob made a louis playlist bc i remember he once said he’d put peggy by ceechyna on it 😭 i too am a loustat shipper 😭 seeing them back together feels like going back home! did you peep that they have matching outfits? they’ve said that lestat floats when he’s happy (they float in a few scenes where he and louis have sex lol and also when he was playing the loneliness i think? and ppl recorded him) so his little jumps and spins just SHOW that hes SO happy to be back with louis :) loustat staring into each other’s eyes during “brutal love” and gabi realizing she’s NOT lestat’s greatest love is sooo satisfying. yeah the car scene and after is so rough. i honestly get that he lied to louis but he wasn’t doing it out of malice. this is his deepest trauma that he’s forced himself to rationalize away. and i don’t even blame louis for his initial reaction bc it’s pretty much everyone’s reaction lol. but lestat had a panic attack bc he feels deep shame about it, that’s why he’s never told anyone, why he lies and says she’s sofia not gabriella, why he keeps saying it’s okay for vampires. it’s all justifications to himself. i agree, though, he kinda needed louis to react like that, to cut through all the bullshit he uses to cope. and for louis, hot headed louis who can be mean as his mother when he wants to be, to see lestat falling apart and realize this is actually traumatic for him was sooo moving imo. THAT is why they are the soulmates of all time 😭 it’s clear that lestat was groomed since his childhood. i mean in general thats the case with incest, even when the actual incest doesn’t take place until adulthood, but also there’s a few hints through the season. the familiarity with which gabi groped lestat when she was tending his wounds, there was also a lyric in one of his songs that goes “by candlelight, you used to teach me how to kiss.” that i assume is also about gabi. lestat tries to deflect from that reality (bc it breaks his whole ‘it’s different for vampires’ argument) by bringing up how florence was emotionally and verbally abusive to louis. having known an incest survivor, i now see this as a coping mechanism. lol you realizing moments before claudia is called that you’re actually not ready for it was me too. i knew what was coming bc i read the books and i was still unprepared for that scene omg. let me just start by saying that delainey was so insanely incredible in that scene. she’s had so many good scenes but i’d argue that was her best yet. i felt everything she said. i understood her rage. i understood her despair, her pain. ugh. i’ll always argue that claudia had to die. not bc it was fair or right or even good for the story tbh but bc it’s the essence of the entire thing. this was anne rice’s response to her own daughter passing. she wrote iwtv out of grief, and from there, she built the vampire chronicles universe. i think putting claudia in the same bubble as other female characters that were killed to further a male’s storyline isn’t fair bc of this. ngl i do think louis knew this a bit, that claudia hates him. i think that’s why he feels so guilty, but this helped him gain closure bc it was finally expressed. he finally heard it, directly from claudia. she loathes him. her mortal life ended because of him. every bad thing that happened to her after turning into a vampire happened bc he felt too guilty about starting a race riot to let her die naturally. lestat, bruce, armand, the coven, all of it happened bc of louis. and louis still has the audacity to say things like “i didn’t kill her.” or to blame armand and lestat. that scene with claudia was pulled straight from the book, though it’s actually worse in the book lol. louis does it alone so she lays in on louis (tho she does say she liked lestat better in the books too! at the end of the day, lestat and claudia are extremely similar. it makes sense she’d like him more as a person. the issue for her was that lestat loved louis more than her, so she’d never convince him to kill louis.) in the book she also tells louis to kill himself and then stabs him lol. i think it makes sense to me that loustat go back to being only about themselves after the seance. it’s what claudia has been saying her entire vampire life. they’re selfish, that’s why she despised them. and here they are, proving that again. i mean, to be fair, what the fuck could they even do to help her. louis saying “who else is gonna have us” while there’s a picture of him and lem as his phone background. louis plssss 😭 i’m choosing to think lemuel is cheating too just to feel better for him lol. i was waiting for you to let the beheading happen lmfao i do feel a bit happy like ghost claudia probably giggled as she watched that happen. a little karmic retribution for her shitty dads :)

nataly

sorry ts long as hell my bad i was typing as i watched 😭😭😭

Gayle McGowan

Daniel especially but Armand as well were super gross for releasing revenge porn because Lestat wouldn't allow Daniel to exploit his trauma and put it on camera. Totally uncalled for no matter how much he doesn't like Lestat. For someone who claims to be a great journalist, he should be able to recognize that the look on Lestat's face in that video is not one of pleasure and that that relationship is abusive. Gross

Gayle McGowan

In the book - Lestat was not present for the seance, Louis had a talamasca agent turned vampire David Talbot with him. Claudia was much harsher in the book and actually stabs Louis at the end and tells him to kill himself. Which he does attempt. They are not doing that in the show because Louis attempted suicide in 1973 in San Francisco instead. The reason Claudia goes so hard at Louis is because she went hard at Lestat all the time in New Orleans and tried to kill him. In the books, she was the one who slit his throat not Louis. Louis on other hand never got much push back from her because she needed one of the two to take her to Europe since she couldn't defend herself in her child's body sos he mostly held her tongue around Louis. In the books, she does prefer Lestat because he's honest and upfront about the type of person he is. Louis on the otherhand tries to behave as if he's better than other vampires because of his catholic guilt so he constantly downplays his selfish behaviour and shifts the blame onto others. Claudia hated both for making her a vampire and trapping her in a child's body (that's her main gripe because Lestat was never physically abusive - no drop in the books). She couldn't bear having either around her unless she could control them and get them to do her bidding. She recognized that was never going to be Lestat plus she would never be able to lie/manipulate enough to convince Lestat to kill Louis and leave with her to go to Europe so it had to be Louis. She knew she could manipulate Louis to kill Lestat and control him. She loved them both but she hated them more.

Rae

I really don’t want to point to books, but the book Merrick is referred to very heavily in the scene almost word for word, and while at the time it was a way to show the cold-blooded killer that Claudia truly was as a child, in this perspective with her being a young woman experiencing the ever-looming shadow of these men ever consumed in their own companionship and selfishness, it hits so much harder at the trials of womenhood. And with them moving on so quickly afterwards… of course they did, because as Claudia said, it was never about her. It’s their resolution as part of their marriage with the band-aid they brought into it. It’s not lost on me that the reason they were beheaded was they were so caught up in their relationship and love that they failed to notice anyone or anything else.

Em

Maybe I’m being overly soft and optimistic about this, but…. While I do believe that Claudia has hatred for Louis, and while he deserves the brunt of her rage, I also believe that she loved him. Or I want to believe that. And possibly some of the things she said (like preferring Lestat or hating Louis more than Bruce) were born from anger and a desire to hurt Louis as much as possible, rather than it actually being 100% true. It brought me back to s2 where Claudia lies about not being able to dream. “It was just something she wrote.” Claudia’s ghost has similar things to say in the book, but it’s left ambiguous as to whether we’re meant to believe it. As for Loustat moving on so quickly after the seance… well it made their immediate decapitation a little bit satisfying. I love them and their codependent bond to pieces, but they had it coming.

Alejandra Alas

I Believe that Claudia has been suffering all this time and the hate has only been heightened by her death because she gets to watch the 2 people who prolonged her suffering through child vampirism continue to live and continue to love which is something she no longer has, and never did until Madeline and it was taken away from her too, so yea she hates both of them very much, the seance and Claudia's hate was pulled from one of the later books as well and its depicted pretty similar too.

Gayle McGowan

Not sure the makeup of the writer's room for episode 6, and obviously black people are not a monolith who all have the same opinions, but one thing to note for background info is that Jacob and Delainey are consulted about the script and the writers never leave anything in that the actors are uncomfortable or unhappy with.

Alex T

God, I'd also love a list of Lestat and Louis' favorite media. Like, what's on Lestat's Spotify Wrapped? And did Louis and Armand watch Degrassi *together*? I think Louis brought up the finger thing in the bar because he (correctly) clocked that Gabriella and Lestat's relationship is abusive. It was a bit of an olive branch like hey, I've experienced this too, let's talk, but Lestat immediately rejected it. That Claudia scene was ROUGH, but Delainey absolutely killed it. I watched the episode with friends online and we went from spamming the group chat to absolute stunned silence during her speech. Her wailing for Madeleine breaks me every time. And while I agree, I don't know how Louis and Lestat can move on from that, I think a part of it is that Louis already *knew* that was how she felt. In the 2x05 fight, Armand's final clapback is "but [Claudia] didn't love YOU", and Louis tearfully says, "I know". It's what leads him to leave and run outside. I think it's more complicated than "Claudia always hated him", I think there was love there too, but mixed with the kind of rage and disappointment you can feel towards a parent who's failed you. ROUGH. I'm shocked Louis and Lestat weren't MORE put off by how aggressive Daniel seemed at the dinner. His line about Louis respecting his privacy was SO pointed after finding out that Louis knew what Armand had been up to re: Daniel. I was so nervous he was going to drop the Sofia bomb then and there but nope, the way he actually did it was sooo much worse. "Where's Akasha in all this?" SAME. I need to know! I have theories, but I don't want to spoil anything if I end up being right. We'll find out next week, I guess??

Jana

1. I’m assuming each of the three vampires in the studio turned one of the three band members. We now know Gabriella turned Alex, and I’m guessing Sam turned Salamander, because I’m sure Lestat turned TC. We know she has a seat at the Long Table. Muse Magnus did mention her in the list: a hand (Nicki), a finger (Antoinette), a drummer (TC), a pimp (Louis), you, Mommy, Claudia. 2. Gabriella does cut her hair every time it grows back—I’m guessing nightly, if vampires stay as they were when turned. You can see it on the floor at her feet in the very first shot of her on the tour bus after the opening credits in episode 2. And you see it again in the backseat of Lestat’s car when Christine’s cleaning crew is handling the newlywed mess in episode 3. 3. “Brutal Love” is another beautiful song. I also wondered if he was singing it to both of them at first. And I think Gabriella (who has likely heard it before) fully thought it was about her. That look in her eyes the moment she realizes Lestat is zeroed in on Louis and singing it to and about him instead. Oooh. And then at the end of the rehearsal, when she’s trying to rope him back in and get him refocused on her…the way he pulls out of her kiss (clearly not wanting it) and then interrupts her to tell her to give Alex some affection as his “mother.” Ohhh. She can’t maintain her control while Louis is around, and she’s realizing the power she has cultivated over him since their mortal lives may not compare to that of a greater love. 4. Lestat’s visceral reaction and subsequent panic attack when his darkest secret was brought to light was gut wrenching. He’s spent centuries trying to ignore the shame and hurt, trying to make himself believe he chose and was a willing participant in his own abuse, trying to rationalize and justify it. So when everyone finds out, when Louis is there in front of him and knows the truth and reacts the way anyone would, Lestat finally has no choice but to face the ugly reality of what he’s been doing and what has happened to him. 5. Claudia. Oh, man. How could she not hate them, though? Taking her, taking her mortal life without her consent, trapping her forever in a body far too young for her mind, using her as bandaging for their own fractured and bleeding relationship. And I can see how she would hate Louis the most. That was likely cemented once she learned it was Louis who took her from the fire and brought her home to keep rather than to a hospital, Louis who wanted her to be turned, Louis who then treated the “dark gift” he wanted imposed on her as a curse instead, Louis who wanted her glued to his side while showing her repeatedly that other men and his fucked up relationships were always more important. What episode of season 2 was it where Daniel starts breaking Louis’ romanticized memories of her, saying it sounded like she hated him while reading her diaries? I really need to do yet another rewatch of seasons 1 and 2. But she definitely hated them both. The admission that she really didn’t care who she killed and who she used until she found someone for herself, and that she made the decision based on who she knew she could manipulate more easily was savage. She turned herself into a wedge specifically to drive them apart, not just as a means to her own ends, but as punishment for what they had done to her. I wonder if that’s why she was so fixated on Lestat’s presence at the seance, because she hated them finding their way back to each other, especially since she was experiencing an eternal existence cut off from Madeleine. But even as I say she definitely hated them both, she also definitely loved them both. As she’s screaming, “I hate you,” she’s arguably simultaneously screaming, “I loved you!” Because you can’t hate someone that deeply unless you love(d) them just as deeply. 6. Whew this episode was an emotional rollercoaster. I can’t even really get into the ties between Claudia, Gabriella, and Akasha’s experiences in a world built for and around men, even centuries and millennia apart, and the rage and resentment and viciousness instilled in them because of it.

xris037

Lestat's not doing the concert for his ego - he's doing it at Gabriella's request to kick off the great conversion.

xris037

Lestat is dressed so he is disguised in public. He's supposed to be dead by assassination.

xris037

people are being very weird about the fact that Lestat has been sexually abused and manipulated by his mom for two centuries.

Jus Ty

the scene on the bench felt like " yeah.. Claudia cant find peace...... ANYWAY at least we can 😍😄😄" and i didnt like it :/

b e

regarding the claudia scene, the reason why she doesn't go 'as hard' on lestat in my opinion is because lestat holds no delusions in regards to how much she hates him. he organized the seance for louis, it was so louis could say a proper goodbye to her and then even lestat got taken aback by her hostility towards louis because in his head he obviously saw louis and claudia as a unit just like everyone else did in the first two seasons. when she says she likes lestat better it's because she respects that he doesn't hide how he's a piece of shit but louis on the other hand....not any better than lestat but likes to act like it despite abusing claudia too! she decided to poison lestat because she knew louis would be the easier one to manipulate because once again he doesn't know who he is and she knew lestat would never go against louis for her. i think this was necessary for louis tbh, he lived in his delusions and woe is me attitude long enough regarding claudia.

gabbyness

I feel like I can't form an opinion on this episode until I see the next one. Like others have said, louis and lestat barely reckon with what happened in the seance and just move on. But also, they are selfish! Which is exactly what claudia said. But I'm hoping some timeout in headless jail gives them time to think about what they've done. The revenge porn is fucked, but I get why armand is doing it. Daniel I think is mostly just being petty. That scene where he's like "Thank you for respecting my privacy, Louis" after armand told him that he was proxy stalking daniel for 50 years through armand was very pointed. I mean even without that, louis did not try to stay out of his head, what a liar. The anti-blackness is weird and I don't know how to feel about. I wish they would have kept black writers on. I'm not black so take this with a grain of salt, but the slave line didn't bother me as much as her calling louis nappy headed. What was even the point of that? The slave thing at least had precedent in s1 because claudia referred to them both as lestat's slave. Anyway I'm pretty sure next ep is going to show us what Armand has been doing all season, so excited for that.

Temi M Reacts

😆 headless jail. No honestly I’ve been reflecting more on this episode since watching, and I think if anything, that moment was finally us as the audience seeing the veil and artifice removed. These are deeply selfish men, and they themselves will admit it. They are pained by Claudia’s death because of the love they have for her, but even her eternal suffering is second to their own romantic love. It’s a bit sickening to watch, but it’s actually not out of character. Their REAL character. Not the characters they invented to absolve themselves of the worst of themselves.

Li Encarnacion

To your point about louis and claudia's relationship, I think it is very telling which diary louis decided to bring to the seance. It is dated 1917 and it is the first diary she had which would make her around 14. She lived to her 50s and we see that louis has all of her diaries. Why would he pick that one? I've always thought louis used claudia as a replacement for miss lily and as the daughter, sister, throwpillow. Armand clocked a lot of what was going on there. I also think it is telling that lestat's muse version of claudia is the version that was plotting against him. The one that was formidable and also she doesnt look like a child. I think that is also the fundamental difference in how louis and lestat saw her. Louis saw her as a child especially after she died. He infantilized her and softened her edges. Even in louis's memories, once claudia turns 18 Lestat no longer treats her like a child. He treats her as his fledgling and as an opponent. As she is someone who is stuck in a form that is always underestimated, I can imagine that is better than someone who refuses to see you. Additionally lestat always champions her ferocity while louis shies away from it.

Thoughts: -Lestat is dressed in the cloak and scythe because it’s Hallowe’en. -the video reveal and Lestat’s panic attack is probably the best depiction of complex trauma disorder I have ever seen in media. Dismiss, deflect/downplay, then uncontrollable physical reaction (vomiting), spiral into panic attack. Heartbreaking and so well done by Sam Reid. We know this was an abusive, coerced relationship (and you can see in the video even that Lestat is practically dissociating in the moment with Gabriella)… imagine having that abuse put online for all to see. And I think Lestat compartmentalized it (that was Gabriella, this is Sofia) but hearing someone else see it and voice the thoughts he’s had all along (it’s disgusting, this is the root of all your sickness) slammed it in his face that no, it’s not different for vampires, this is wrong. And he vomits and has a panic attack. I cried. -the seance was amazing. Claudia’s hatred of Louis is straight from the books (“Merrick”), and she basically says that she considered having Lestat kill Louis but she decided against that plan because Lestat wouldn’t have gone along with it. -I’m going to copy paste a Reddit take I thought was really interesting below about why the seance happened (please feel free to delete if you feel that doing so is inappropriate):

(Post from Reddit I thought was interesting)— Summoning claudia is LESTAT'S idea. he's the one who gets into contact with merrick. he's the one who organises everything. he's the one who seems to view it as a way for louis to get closure and move forward after the regina debacle. he thinks he's doing it for louis. and what is louis' reaction to that? we don't know how he reacted to it at first, but on the day of, he drags his feet and wants to cancel. why? because he already KNOWS everything that claudia is going to tell him. now, i know the word "delusional" has been thrown at louis a lot this season, and many people seem to take that at face value. but if you go back to S1 and S2 and pay attention to the character journey unfolding before you, then you realise that the arc of louis finding out claudia's true feelings about him already HAPPENED. he recounted their entire life together. he read claudia's diaries. he faced the truth of his involvement in her turning. he remembered his failed suicide attempt. he contented with the reality of their relationship. he KNOWS that claudia hated him. but who doesn't know that? LESTAT. i think it's important to admit that, for most of their time together, lestat doesn't actually view claudia as a daughter, he views her as a RIVAL for louis' love and attention. he thinks that loucladia have a unique bond (they're both black; they immediately jump into the roles of "father" and "daughter" while he's just an "uncle"; they can communicate telepathically while he's shut out of their minds forever) that he's intensely jealous and insecure about. lestat also knows that claudia hates him (i mean, she plotted his death, that would be a strong enough hint for most people). but i think that his jealousy and insecurity over loucladia cloud his judgement to the point where he can't imagine claudia hating louis, even after reading the book. that's why he suggests doing the seance! he genuinely believes it may be a positive and soothing experience for louis. because he can recognise all the ways he failed claudia, but he was never privy to the pain and conflict brewing behind the deadlocked gates of loucladia's mind. he thought they had a great time together at their two-person party he was never a welcome guest at. i think all of that also explains their rather muted reactions to the whole ordeal (that i know rubbed some people the wrong way). louis has no reason to cry and walk into the sun again in response to claudia's lashings because he'd already fully come to terms with her hating him by the end of S2. lestat has no reason to cry and have a crisis because, well, he's not the one who just got a lashing. but he does have to re-consider and restructure his whole conception of louis and claudia's relationship that he's held for decades at this point.

I also thought it was interesting that in an interview, Delainey said that her own personal interpretation was that some of Claudia's vitriol toward Louis here was rooted in jealousy. She's had to suffer alone for so long, and then to watch Louis, despite all his mistakes and flaws, get a true companion in Lestat, a lover who sees him as the most important thing on earth and keeps coming back to him; it hurts. Claudia found exactly that in Madeleine but then lost her so soon and can't find her in the hell of her afterlife. So part of Claudia's rage is not just about the way she was treated in the past, but also seeing Louis now still getting everything that *she* wanted, everything that she has been denied.

Daniel is definitely being petty (“It brought poor Dan to his knees and seeded a hate for me inside him, there to be watered in the sunlight later.”), but we’ve also watched him grow darker through the season. Vampirism has knocked him off the wagon. He was drinking from Dee after she did cocaine. He hunted down and drained a drunk stumbling through an alley. Daniel has very much returned to form as an addict. And now that he’s hooked up with Armand, he’s embracing his darkest instincts. Wait! Is that why he’s called the Devil’s Minion? D.M. Daniel Malloy. The Devil’s Minion. I really need to read the books.

Wow. I didn’t realize my comment was that long. I kind of just started writing, and…I don’t know what happened. 😬 Regarding the horrific revenge porn put out by Daniel and Armand, do we think Alex secretly filmed it? Like, how did they get it otherwise? And Alex can’t possibly know that Armand is responsible for his brother’s death, right? Was Armand pulling things from Larry’s mind in the subway station or speaking through Alex (like that vamp Daniel was interviewing) in his last conversation with Larry at the studio? Armand repeated the same lines. And if so, Alex can’t be aware of just how deeply Armand is in his head. I mean. Has he been led to believe Lestat drove his brother to suicide through all the berating? I gotta stop. I’m rambling again.

One thought I have about the strangely serene, almost relieved tone of the final Loustat scene together after the seance -- I think maybe it has something to do with the fact that when you've been dogged by guilt for a long time and struggling to find some way to 'fix' it, there can be a kind of strange relief in hitting bottom and realizing it's unfixable. There's almost a feeling of like, wow, the struggle is over, we lost because we deserved to lose, we're wrong and there's no righting it, and emotionally that can almost bring a sense of release, like 'finally, it's over.' They know now there's nothing she wants from them except for them to get her name out of their mouths. She doesn't want the memorial, the vigilante 'justice', the song, the seance. The only thing she wants has absolutely nothing to do with them: Madeleine is all she cares about, not them. They've both been searching for closure: the quasi-therapy of the interview, the memorial on the wall, the vigilante 'justice,' roleplay with Fraudia; Lestat's years of squalor and rat-eating, the music, the song he wrote that was basically a musical restatement of Claudia's long-ago principle that you have to leave the damage so you don't forget the damage ["Don't you dare call it yearning, it's the fear that I'm right: Don't you try to forget all the things you regret"] And now they can stop, because all that was meaningless to anyone but themselves, and in some sense getting Claudia's hatred into the open provides an ending, finally. I do agree with everyone who says it illustrates the selfishness of their love (though I don't think they're alone in that -- it's part of the inherent monstrousness of vampires that they destroy the lives of others over and over in order to continue their own lives; ultimately perhaps no 'unselfish' vampire survives.)

I think people are so taken aback by what Claudia says to Louis that they don't listen to what she says to Lestat. They're so bothered by Claudia say that she liked Lestat more, that they don't LISTEN to her saying how much she hates him.

yep i saw a lot of people pointing out the "bucket of louisiana fried chicken", "nappy headed" and "slave" coming from a non-black writing room (it's actually so white i remember them deleting a video picturing them all some time ago)

Okay, glad I’m not the only one. Again, I usually don’t like to break that 4th wall, but it didn’t feel quite right in the scene. Like it’s hard to explain, but all the (for lack of a better word) “black-isms” of S1 & 2 felt natural, so it never took me out of the scene. But there was something about those moments in her monologue here that felt unnatural. The “nappy-headed” line most especially. It’s hard to verbalize why. Maybe this is silly but it’s like y’all have damn near the same hair texture lol. A couple of Creole’s calling each other nappy-headed is crazy 😆 Also hearing a women levy that insult at a man just seems off to me. Usually it’s more of a derogatory term used towards women. Idk man, I can’t explain it. Either way, it in the moment felt like a rare misstep in how Claudia and Louis talk to each other compared to S1 & 2. *Flashes back to Don Imus’s “nappy-headed hoes” comment *

Yes! Lestat had been pretty terrible to him too, which in the grand scheme of what characters do to each other on this show doesn’t seem that bad but it makes sense as his motivation. You should read their chapter in qotd! It works well as a standalone short story if you don’t want to read the rest.

The first part of this episode was everything I've been wanting for the past two years and... what followed absolutely destroyed me. This episode is very IWTV in the way it's polarizing my feelings. Loved your insight as always and the comments here were also great to read.

Crazy too that the only reason they even dragged Claudia back from the afterlife was to try and give LOUIS closure 😭 these fuckin guys

I'm not gonna police how anybody should feel about what was exchanged between Claudia and Louis because everyone has the right to feel it how they felt it in the moment. But, I do want to point some things out: 1. The writers room is not all white. People has been repeating that lie and it's become a truth now, but it's simply not true. 2. Jacob and Delaney have said several times how the writers consult with them, let them make changes, basically the writers make sure they're not putting anything out they're not comfortable with. Delaney said she was super happy with how the seance scene turned out, indeed she addlibbed a lot. 3. A group of people is however policing how the actors should've felt about it and about the whole season in general, using anti-blackness as a shield to just hate on the season because they hate the character of lestat, going so far as to fill the mailbox of NAACP with complaints and using PHRENOLOGY in big 2026 to go out and say that Jacob Anderson can't be an spokesperson for black people because he's not black enough, because he's a black British and because he's mixed, saying his features are too Eurocentric (I was baffled when I saw those tweets and messages). 4. About how Louis have been portrayed this season in comparison with lestat. I don't think that has anything to do with race. The Louis we saw before was from pink-tinted glasses, from his perspective and telling a tale about who he thinks he is. But he's selfish, he's imperfect and some times he was also the villain in Claudia's journey. Indeed, Jacob Anderson has said time and time again to let black characters be evil, be bad people, be selfish, be imperfect and I think that's what Louis is. An imperfect character which we are seeing through a different lens this season and I think that's great. I don't think it's done in a yuxtaposition to Lestat being a perfect white good vampire, because he isn't presented as such either. He has a huge ego, he's dramatic, avoidant with his problems and errors, he's not honest either and he's also selfish, we've seen it time and time again. So anyway, loved your reaction as always, I loved this season too. I just think there is so much hate towards this season coming from a specific part of the fandom, which is not doing constructive or argumented criticism but just blatant hate because they don't like lestat and it's a shame.

from an older person to a younger person :) I have found as you get older...you get wiser yes...well hopefully...you still see yourself as a young person...i still feel like im in my mid 20s...not in my body :) but my mind...it feels weird to me to say that i am 54...like wtf? seriously its an odd feeling...lmao so Louis and Lestat talking about Drake and watching Degrassi makes so much sense to me :)

I definitely believe that Claudia felt burdened by Louis in her life, and I think she felt hatred for both her parents BUT she also did love them both. Louis and Lestat both failed her in different ways. It truly never *was* about Claudia, Louis was selfish for asking Lestat to turn her in the first place. I don't think this cancels out her love for Louis (or even Lestat), the love is still there, that's why it's so tragic! I also do want to note that the seance happened in the books and Claudia did use those words to describe (a white) Louis, not justifying anything of course! Anne Rice herself was worth questioning herself, and I say this as a poc Anne Rice fan myself.

1. Yeah, that was such a devastating moment. Being forced to confront your deepest trauma in front of the world is traumatic in its own right. Yet another violation. 2. Delainey killeddddd that scene. And yeah, looking back some of the things I originally saw as Louis’s emotional tribute to Claudia feels now very self-serving. 3. And yeah, reflecting on it more, I can see how her hatred for Louis has festered in a way it never need to for Letsat. 4. Sigh, this is what pains me the most. So many people wrote her off as a lost cause and in doing so never saw how strong she was and ultimately contributed to her death. I will say though that Lestat probably more so than many recognized this trait of hers. 5. I think they did as well. I still mourn for what could’ve been for their family. 6. Yeah, I actually saw a post showing part of that scene from the books. Fascinating read on Claudia’s true feelings towards them.
