Lestat is chiefly upset with Armand because of Claudia’s death —that’s why Lestat is dressed the way he is for the Big Boss performance —pigtails and blue eyeshadow for Claudia, plus the pants as a nod to what he wore at the trial. (Wild to watch him gyrating on the stage and think “hey, same guy who plays Dale Jennings”!)

I’m fighting for my life in the YouTube comments about this already lol. But while I understand Lestat being upset about Claudia’s death and how Armand masterminded the whole affair, I guess I’m a bit confused considering Lestat actively took part in the trial and did nothing to save Claudia. So while Armand is definitely to blame, Lestat is not uninvolved in her death too. So to me it feels like his anger at Armand is a little bit of projection of his own guilt as well, you know?

So in the books he was forced into the trial so some people are convinced it’s the same in the show while they’ve made it pretty clear they’ve changed that aspect. Also some people just have such a big hate boner for Armand they’re never going to change their mind.

Fiona

Yeah, I do think (assuming the show goes the way they appear to be going with that part of the story) you are correct about Lestat projecting some of his own guilt. In the books, Lestat comes to Paris because he hasn’t healed from NOLA and Armand promises to help him, but then locks him up and starves him of blood; at the trial, Lestat is barely aware of what’s going on. (There are hints of some of this in the show —Lestat definitely has a few bruises visible in a couple of shots, and you can see him swaying on his feet at one point —but the show has taken a different path on this, I guess.) It is still in character for Lestat to hate Armand for his part of Paris despite Lestat’s own involvement, regardless. This was the first episode where I felt Gabriella had a bit more complexity to her. It’s so difficult watching her scenes with Lestat because you can see all the threads of why he is the way he is, while being sooo uncomfortable sitting with it. Makes one appreciate how fucked up it must have made Lestat, who actually had to live it for years.

I think the show does a great job of having ALL the characters have shades of grey to their morality. It’s clear no one is wholly good or bad; anyone who has “a big hate boner” for a character without being able to empathize with that character to some extent is missing out, i feel.

Ahhh I see. That makes other’s opinions make more sense!

Ohhhh yeah that’s a huge divergence from what they depicted in the show. I can see how people with knowledge of the books can read the scene much differently. And totally agreed on Gabriella. It’s such a hard watch sometimes, but still compelling and super informative about Lestat’s character.

I think it's a fair take to see Lestat as still deflecting some of his guilt over the trial onto Armand; I think that's an astute observation. Throughout the season, Lestat keeps protesting whenever it's implied that he killed Claudia (he's angry when Gabriella implies it in episode 2 ("I can see why you gave him a daughter; I can see why you took her back." And he's offended when it's implied again at the seance that he's one of her killers because of what happened in Paris. But in the end, I think he has to accept that he is one of her killers, to a fairly large degree.) But then again, Lestat's behavior in the trial itself was very different from Armand's. The show has changed the trial massively from the book, as others have said, but if I've understood correctly, I think this is what the show is presenting as the narrative: Lestat was contacted by the coven and informed they were going to try Louis and Claudia for his murder, and in an initial burst of rage/woundedness/anger (perhaps fanned by Gabriella, who apparently was with him around that time, as she talks about being in New Orleans and seeing "your slit throat, slow to heal" in episode 2) he hops on a boat and willingly plans to participate. However, we can see that as his initial rage starts to fade, he's already having mixed feelings about all of it even in the rehearsal stage (as we see in the flashback to their rehearsal in 2x08, where he's acting resentful of Armand and defensive of Claudia -- "you have no idea of Claudia's strength!"). Then, in 2x07 Lestat starts off participating in the trial as planned, but the moment he turns and looks at Louis for the first time, he realizes he absolutely cannot go through with this, and from that point on throughout the rest of the trial he's trying to improvise some way to save him. At that point, I think it's a fair question to ask: if he could have saved Claudia as well, would he have chosen to do so? Personally, I think he would have. I think his rage couldn't outlast the reality of seeing them again, wounded and in peril. As soon as he saw what this 'revenge' really looked like, he didn't want it. But at that point, his options were very limited. He needed to look like he was playing along with the trial to prevent the coven from turning on him and using their collective mind powers to neutralize him (the way they were attacking Claudia and Louis whenever they tried to speak in their own defense). In order to pull off the difficult task of mind-controlling the audience and changing the outcome of Louis's sentence, Lestat needed the element of surprise. He could only get away with it once before the coven realized he wasn't on their side anymore and turned against him. So, if he'd intervened in Claudia's sentencing to save her, he would have lost the chance to save Louis, whose sentencing was coming up afterwards -- the coven were not going to let him get away with pulling the same trick twice. So, he chose Louis over her, as he always has and always will; if he could only save one of them, it was always going to be Louis. But I don't think that's quite the same thing as continuing to want her dead; his complicity is real, but I think he had a change of heart mid-trial and would have saved her if he could. Armand, on the other hand, never had a change of heart about trying to save either Louis or Claudia -- he just took advantage of what Lestat had done, took credit for it, and after Louis destroyed his coven, Armand switched his allegiance back to Louis and became Louis's rebound/revenge companion. I think Lestat hates him for all that, too. Also, I am really and truly not clear on whether Armand deliberately let drop to Santiago the hint about Lestat's murder (Santiago overhears him when he threatens to treat Claudia "no better than you treated your maker", and Armand knows Santiago overheard it and instead of erasing it from his mind, lets him go). Was that Armand stirring up the coven against Claudia deliberately, but losing control of it and watching as Louis got swallowed up in it too? Hard to be sure. With all of these characters, their exact motivations are never entirely spelled out, so we all have room to interpret. LOL, sorry for the lengthy essay! Feel free to ignore, I'm definitely not trying to argue anyone out of their own perspective. There's just so many complications around the trial, whew, much to ponder!!

I don’t want to do Armand apologia but I don’t think he was trying to let Santiago know about them killing lestat. I’m pretty sure the moment Armand decided to betray them was the night of madeleine’s transformation because he felt hurt that Louis didn’t “make him” attend (insane I know). Armand is also the one who freed Louis from the crypt, so he didn’t just decide to go with Louis after the coven was destroyed. I’m not totally sure I understand what Armand was thinking/feeling regarding Louis vs the coven during that time period. I doubt he understands either.
