Was hoping this podcast was going to deepen my love for Voyager but man it feels like these are more about bashing Voyager. Whether its the "white man's" attempts to bring culture into Star Trek or the horrible visual effects or the character of Tom it just feels like instead of celebrating this show we all love they are tearing it apart. Really wanted to like this.

Mark Scheuern

I'll disagree with another comment and say that I very much enjoy how you point out the bad as well as the good. It was a successful show with a long run. I don't need it to be "celebrated" or to have my "love deepened". I'm having fun learning more about the show and am happy that the actors don't feel the need to pretend the show was perfect.

Brittany

thank you SO much for discussing how crazy offensive this episode is. it didn’t age well at all!

Ian

WELL actually in The Chute, you will see Neelix's ship. In response to Tom Paris being a pig, I think that is simply his character, and it made it interesting. DIS suffers from bland "perfectly imperfect" characters. None of the characters need improvement, because they're "perfect" just the way they are. This is not human reality, and what we get to see with Paris is a progression from a pig to a respected husband to B'elanna. As long as the issues were called out, which they were, I think it makes the character so dynamic.

Anastasia Guiler

Y'all I've been a fan of Voyager for years and I always thought Kim was Korean.... And yeah that Chakotay stuff was awkward at best, racist at worst

Anastasia Guiler

Yea I've always loved Tom and B'lanna and I love how Tom does go from sexist pig to upstanding man. That's why I thought they were perfect together because they rounded each other out

Mary Jac Greer

Just wanted to point out that Captain Janeway’s animal guide looked very similar to the lizzards she and Tom turned into in the later episode. Just thought it was kind of interesting.

Stargatelover

Thank you for another episode of the Delta Flyers! It is never too much time to talk about offensive topics, I thought it was good you took your time to point these things out and also what Robbie told about how he handles things today, that he makes sure that everything is right and appropriate! Yes, it was another time but as you said, that isn’t an excuse. I honestly like this episode but probably because the whole Janeway/Coffee thing starts there :)

Josh

Not sure any of us expect a show made in the 90s to be infused with the ultra-wokeness of today. Don't worry guys, we have loved the show for years, even when it wasn't perfect.

Мария Рябцева

I rewatched the episode just yesterday and it's funny how I saw it in an entirely different light. Maybe it tells something about me or my cultural background, but I wouldn't mark it as so very offensive. Like, it never came to my mind that if someone quotes a Chinese proverb it necessarily suggests that he or she is Chinese o_O And I think that shot of Janeway's hand on Tom's shoulder was just wonderful. It was a gesture of support and trust from her part and rhymed with her opening "personal log" entry about being more than a captain to her crew and struggling with the ways to do that. So, I'm with Mr Beltran here, I really liked that one.

Dana Hanson

Just so you know Robbie, in my view Tom absolutely a hundred percent redeems himself later on. Tom as a character has one of the best arcs throughout the whole show in my opinion, and I’ve always loved where he ends up by the end of the show. Even in these early episode where the writing wasn’t very flattering, you still managed to play him well, and you made his arc later on believable and very satisfying to watch. So thank you for that, and thank you for addressing all the bad stuff that was in these early episode and this episode in particular. It’s important to keep it in mind as we watch the show from a more modern standpoint, while still not excusing the sentiments expressed.

JR Poole

Have y’all ever thought about doing an audiobook mini series? Character growth and redemption. Would CBS allow that?

Gary Wardell

Alex

Didn’t anyone else think it was weird Chakotay had all his animal spirit stuff even though the Marquis hship got blown up???

Eric Bennett

I have thought about that a number of times. Didn’t he also have it with him on a shuttle once that was lost?

Austin Vanderlyn

Btw, just addressing what Robbie said about the writers not doing research on native culture: the good news is that they.....tried. I guess. They hired a native cultural consultant named Jamake Highwater to advise on Chakotay. The bad news is...... he was an Armenian con man. Sooooo..... acoo chi maya. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamake_Highwater

Jenners

Okay, I just have to comment on Tom's rant about the "ivy" in Georgia. It has a name, it's called kudzu, and the natives do NOT love it, they hate it! But it's an invasive species that has taken over. They don't WANT it to climb their trees, that's just what it does. It's not for nothing that it's called the vine that ate the South. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kudzu_in_the_United_States

Of course don't forget Neelix's ship will reappear in the final season when he leaves Voyager to live with the Talaxian community in the asteroid.

So glad you touched on Harry’s “Asianess” if you watch the pilot Janeway refers to his mother as ____-san, a Japanese way of addressing someone! I always justified in my mind by thinking Harry was half Japanese half Korean but now confirmed it was something else ...

Andrew Gilbertson

I was thinking the same thing. I hear people reference that 'ancient Chinese curse' all the time on Facebook. I never took it that any of them was claiming to be Chinese- merely that they were students of Chinese culture. I know plenty of things about Ancient Israel, Ancient Egypt, more than a smattering of knowledge about Feudal Japan... none of which are in my heritage; I just study history. I'd assume the same of Harry Kim, the character. (Now, as to the showrunners not knowing the difference in season 7, that's a little more 'ooof.')

Andrew Gilbertson

I really dismissed Blood Fever on my first watch-through as 'the pon-farr episode, oh brother, any excuse to try and get racy.' But rewatching it, it was such a wonderful, pivotal step in Tom's development. He has the opportunity to take advantage, he has the desire; but he chooses not to be that womanizer, not to follow that impulse- that was the most wonderful moment of growth for the character.

Amanda RPK

You guys talked about snacks on the bridge... They did this on the original Star Trek!

Chad Heroman

I think Rob is being a little PC apologizing for saying, "That Indian". I guarantee you, that in 2020 yrs something that he says today will be considered "taboo" in 2040. Is he going to say, "I'm so sorry, i was a bad person!"? You can't judge your actions today on what people 20 yrs from now might think

Knightleyemma

Wait a sec- Braga was NOT "middle-aged"- he was young then & used to hang out w/ Garrett! BUT he didn't know that "Kim" was Korean, NOT Chinese!? Wow... Times have REALLY changed- though I saw this show recently over quarantine.

Peter Lucas

My impression was certainly that Tom Paris was supposed to come off as a bit of a jerk early on because his whole story arc was about self development and redemption from his felonious backstory. Also, we do see Neelix's ship later on, first in The Chute and again in Homestead.

Zalyn Schwartz

Thank you for such a thoughtful discussion about the problematic elements of this episode, and I appreciate all that you're doing to promote better representations - no blame at all to you and all the joy. I'm part Korean, and my family was both thrilled to see a Kim on the bridge, but also scratching their heads over the "All Asians are alike" aspects. I appreciate that Voyager tried in a time when there was so little representation, and it's so great to see how we all have grown and are doing better.
