With regards to Robert’s gripe about Torres having participated in Chakotay’s spiritual ritual (if you wanna get technical about how broad the show gets about homogenizing indigenous North American culture), could she POSSIBLY have a distant ancestral bond with Chakotay through her apparent Hispanic roots? Now, I know the show hasn’t delved deep into her human ancestry, but couldn’t Torres be a descendant of South American or Mexican heritage too on her father’s side? Her surname suggests an affiliation with at least pan-Hispanic culture, or perhaps she is just a descendent of Spain. I don’t know if I’m reading too far into this, but I get the feeling that this show (and most of Star Trek) tries to stay away from ethnocentrism and is moreso about a shared human experience where all humans have no boundaries amongst each other, nor any prejudice. For example, in TNG Wesley Crusher has a vision of a Native American man/spirit, despite having any apparent native connection to his roots.... Sorry for the rant. I love you guys and love the podcast! Keep up the great work!

Brendan, interesting point re: staying away from ethnocentrism. A friend and I have often noted that the kinda cringey "Native" moments on Star Trek (from the musical scores to the awkwardness of that Wesley Crusher ep you mention) is really a reflection of a 1990s multiculturalism moment. It looks funny/awkward/un-PC to us now, but at the time it was on the forefront of a lot of important work to respectfully "de-other" non-White cultures which continues.

Oh, how I love Monday mornings now that I know I can look forward to an episode after the day's work is done. :-)

The first hand slapped totally sounds Pilabury dough boyesque LOL

Your right have your guest on as you talk about the episode. The Beltran interview seemed to short. Let us know if we are on patreon we will get to see this guest or feature. The show is getting better and better. Love the behind the scenes stories

Even WORSE we never get to know what is in the upper room in the Holonovel. And, we never find out the ending to the holonovel at all, they never finish it!

Jenners

Fun fact: Houston's I Will Always Love You is actually a cover of a song originally written and recorded by Dolly Parton.

Jenners

I think the the reason they often use British accents in movies when the characters are French or German or whatever is that it sounds European.

In the very first episode Janeway said she preferred Aye, Captain, and only Yes, Ma'am in a pinch, yet Tom (and perhaps others) have consistently called her the latter throughout this first season. I blame the writers for internal inconsistency!

Мария Рябцева

I guess the link between the Victorian holonovel and the rest of the episode might be the supposedly haunted house in the holonovel and then Voyager 'haunted' by the aliens. Just like that.

Leum

Are you guys familiar with Jamake Highwater (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamake_Highwater)? He was a consultant for Voyager on Native American stuff (and a consultant/speaker on Native Americans more generally, especially for CBS) despite having absolutely no actual connection to any indigenous people or any credentials.

Andrew Gilbertson

The holonovel is very much a Jane Eyre/gothic horror pastiche, something very Bronte-esque. You haven't seen the last of it. I think this sequence- while not tying into the episode- was intended to be the introduction of a long-running, ongoing setting, much like Sandrines... before plans changed and they decided to start varying things up and introducing new holoprograms rather than sticking with one long program over the course of the series. But it's a shame that it was dropped before it was ever completed. Regarding the 'native american' practices of Chakotay's tribe, I understand the desire to be authentic for the sake of not offending any existing tribes- but as Chakotay's people are supposed to be from another planet, descendants of Earth, and we've seen numerous other Earth cultures, traditions, and even religions (particularly in the books) in Trek that have developed or altered from their recognizable modern selves over hundreds of years, could the argument be made that there's room for Chakotay's fictional tribe to have developed new practices, their own traditions, that don't correspond to thosse of any of Earth's 20th-century tribes? I always got the sense that that was what they were trying to portray- a several-centuries-later outgrowth of human traditions and norms, just as we see in other aspects of Federation culture.

The thing about putting it on to help with insomnia is so true. I rewatch eps ive seen 1000 times when i cant sleep because its so soothing

Darth Selfie

I have a friend who used to fall asleep to TNG episodes, and we figured out it was the background "thrum" of the ship's engine that did it, so maybe that's part of what people are talking about when they say they've used Voyager to fall asleep to.

Re: the holonovel, its very reminiscent of Turn of the Screw by Henry James

Austin Vanderlyn

@Don_Bright Yes they did, his pseudonym was 'Jamake Highwater' heres his wiki link. The crazy thing is he was exposed as a con man in 1984, but the general public still believed that he was native american. I guess in those pre internet days, unless someone saw the specific article or it got picked up by other outlets, then it just kinda slipped. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamake_Highwater

"Does Neelix have Tourette's?!" 😂

Did Garrett mean to say "Girlfriend's Guide to the Galaxy"? :D
