The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Heroes and Demons. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Heroes and Demons:
The ship's holographic doctor must overcome his programmed limitations when the ship's Holodeck is taken over by an alien lifeform. As the only Voyager member able to face this being, the doctor must explore the limits of his programmed behaviour, and reach beyond them to save the crew from a fate worse than death.

Apparently Garrett missed his calling as a strip club master of ceremonies? XD

CMDR Klaas Metzel

Robbies dog had the right reaction to this episode. Sleepy. Weakest episode of season 1. But it was good for the Doctor, I guess. :D

Dee McGee

He was like no other. Hair straight and raven-black; eyes bright with fierce fire - the burning gaze of a hero.

Amit J

As someone mentioned above, the skit Garrett was referring to is from Eddie Murphy - Delirious. Search on Youtube for "Eddie Murphy White people and Hauntings" and you'll find it...hilarious! Great podcast with so many amazing moments and insights such as: Robbie's dog Bob's Amazon women affectation Garrett's accurate take on Asian men in TV/cinema and much more...best ep so far!

Katie Puterbaugh

You guys get better every episode! Garrett when you were lip syncing about turning to energy I died laughing 😂 And Robbie, Walter looked so comfy!

Justin Rhoads

I must have missed something in the episode but I found it amusing that the alien energy seemed to have some sense, within the holodeck program, to know to appear so timely (and on queue) during "Grendel's" appearance over and over. To Garrett and Robbie rewatching each episode, it must take a lot of 'getting used too' to see yourself on T.V. like that. It would seem somewhat strange to me. Unless of course you're almost completely out of the episode (Garrett). Ha. It was a great episode though. Definitely always love the Doctors story arcs. I can imagine it was very punishing for Picardo to be stuck in Sickbay, for over two years, just as much as it was for his character!

William Brandt

Amazing character building episode for the Dr. In my opinion he is so much more interesting then Data. I’m glad the episode went to him. It would be nice to see an interview with the writer/producer that created the concept of a holographic doctor. The sheer amount of imagination and foresight is incredible. The character itself gives so much optimism in the future advancement of technology. 👍🏻

Rich Gross

For what it’s worth, I never thought Harry “didn’t have game”. I took his reluctance to pursue any romantic relationships as him holding on to hope that he’d be soon back with Libby. He’s the youngest character and the most junior officer in the main cast and in addition to him being somewhat “eager” I always considered him the most optimistic.

Mark Verlaat

Fun fact, in the Game Star Trek Timelines, Harry's wardrobe is shown. Link: https://stt.wiki/wiki/Beowulf_Kim I really thought I had missed the part in the episode where he stood like that, but maybe they got it from a picture or something. Maybe Garrett could explain if the pose was photographed?

Stephanie Baker

You guys went deep! And I love it. This is not one of my fav episodes because it doesn’t feature Tom or Harry, so thank you for the discussion. I appreciate it more now. My fav part of the podcast continues to be “What do I remember” and Robbie trying to remember and getting close: Vikings, opera, Wagner, the Dr and the holodeck.

Gary McFarlane

I was going to say about the wee lip sync dance as well, very funny and nice touch 😂

Elaine Ferguson

This podcast is so educational. Last week I learned "nothing burger"; this week "weenus".

Matt

I love this episode! It's so cool to see the Doc on his first away mission, and experiencing personal feelings that come with that time period and spending time with Freya.

Matt

TUVOK try to mind meld with his console! LOL!!!

Matt

The very best Rewatch segment so far! Loved it! Nice job Garrett with the 80s flashback!

Matt

Tracking Tom Paris' hair style as the series goes on, this needs to be a thing! :)

Elizabeth Barden

Great episode for the doctor, loved it. Bob Picardo is an amazing actor and Garrett sorry you only had one line. Enjoying the podcast!!!

Matt

I think when Tom was pushing all of the buttons, it added to the suspense of it. I kinda liked it, especially since Tom didn't usually do that job and wasn't in the transporter room.

Charity Ponton

I want a Harry Kim as Beowulf doll! Also, I want to say that the episodes are getting better and better! It seems you are finding that groove! Happy to be a supporter :)

Chelsea Iwig

This was a great podcast episode! Probably my favorite so far. It seems like we got to see more clips of you both while you were watching the episode and I really enjoyed that. When I was watching the episode and saw Janeway's hair had changed again, I knew you all would bring that up. Personally, I thought they should have kept her hair in the French twist. It was the best balance of being realistic and looking pretty for tv in my opinion. To be more realistic they should have just thrown it up in a ponytail or simple bun, but I guess that wouldn't be feminine and pretty enough for tv (*eyeroll). Anyway, great podcast episode and Robbie, I loved seeing your pup. He sleeps just like my Australian Shepherd lol.

Sybil Wild

Loved how much of the rewatch we got to see in this episode! Robbie is always so salty about how much screen time Tom gets, it's so funny. The episodes keep getting better and better, I can't wait for y'all to get to my favourites (The 37s and The Thaw are both coming up soon!). It's also so cool how the cast still seems to be friends now and y'all just text each other and talk after all this time. Everything about this podcast makes me so happy, y'all are doing something great here.

Selina

Two thumbs up and a weenus! 👍👍💪

Michelle Z

This is not an episode that I've enjoyed in the past, but on this rewatch I found it enduring. Maybe because I am taking it one episode at a time instead of watching several at once. This was a really fun episode of the podcast!

Christopher Collins

I agree this is one of the better Voyager episodes in the first seasons. I remember this episode being promoted with the images of the Doctor getting sliced with the sword.

Christopher Collins

Yeah I learned a new term today. Had never heard of it before. Never taught in Biology classes I have ever attended in High School or College.

Christopher Collins

I made a sketch of Freya prior to this episode shortly after this podcast started on The Delta Flyers Group Page. This Podcast inspired me to watch further ahead and I had forgotten this episode when I watched this episode back in June.

Erica Larabee

Great podcast episode! And great Voyager episode. Love seeing the doctor's development and all his firsts. Garrett, you had me laughing SO hard during your rewatch between "Pure Energy" and Cousin It/mindmeld with the console! lol And, Robbie, your dog is so adorable!

Sony

This podcast was great. So many laughs and all the inside trivia was educational/ funny. Garrett lip-syncing to "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)" was pure Trek comedy in homage to Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015) who was sampled as Spock saying "Pure Energy". I love Heroes and Demons; Camp Trek at it's best (along with TNG's Q-pid). Garrett's right about needing some levity to balance out all the ship-in-danger episodes (especially with the state of the world). Two thumbs up and a weenus!

Sony

All hail the hero! All hail Schweitzer!

Nathanial Moon

George R R Martin totally ripped off Hero's and Demons. In fact Freya was inspiration for Brieanne of Tarth. I totally feel your pain big bro. Asian men had to battle the stigma that we are non sexualized eunuch's in TV and Film for decades. White men don't want to see Asian men that way and unfortunately Voyager fall into that stigma. Ask me how I know. I was hoping that you would make out with Freya, she is your hologram creation after all. I was hoping that Freya would show up in Captain Proton or other hologram programs. I had a huge crush on that actress! Just like Bob. This was one of the greater episodes. It humanized the crew. You guys are on fire! This gets better and better! A full, raging, standing, Weenus salute!

Sony

"Unfortunately, Voyager falls into the stigma". Harry Kim gets more action later on. There's even an infamous episode where he gets an alien STD (and it's not the planet of women). lulz

TheDeltaFlyers

Thanks for your continued support Charity:) Years ago at a Star Trek Convention, a fan showed me a Harry Kim action figure that had been modified to match my Beowulf wardrobe. ~~Garrett

TheDeltaFlyers

Omg, I had no idea that they were sampling Spock!!! That makes it a hundred times cooler:) ~~Garrett

TheDeltaFlyers

Yeah, it does take some getting used to (watching one’s self on TV). It is interesting that the alien energy being had perfect timing within the holo-story:)

TheDeltaFlyers

Don’t tell Brent Spiner that lol. I will try to find out which writer was responsible for creating the Doctor. I am curious as welll:) ~~Garrett

TheDeltaFlyers

Hey Mark, thanks for commenting. I went to the link you provided. The Beowulf wardrobe that I wore was definitely not the same as they depicted in ST: Timelines. I think I might have a Polaroid that the Wardrobe department took of me in storage somewhere. If i find it, I will post it as a Patreon message to all. ~~Garrett

Nathanial Moon

Every minority wants a hero. Harry could have been. There certainly isn't a shortage of White or Jewish leads. Garrett was the only Asian man on TV in the 1990's and Grant Imahara from Myth Busters (RIP) was the only one in the 00's. There is a gross disproportionate representation of Asian men, who out number everyone else on the planet by a factor of 7. I get the Harry as the every man, and I wasn't looking for him to be a Lothario, but couldn't he be Asian Han Solo? Aside from Bruce Lee can you name an Asian male lead that's cool? Very few. Garrett had it all, but was IMO under utilized, because of the box he was written in.

Sony

The Crow was one of my favorite action films in the 90s. RIP Brandon Lee.

Roe O'Brien

OMG Robbie without a HAT!! Haha! Love it. Y'all are the best. Such a great episode. Thanks for making this COVID world bearable <3

David

Thanks Garrett for getting Information Society stuck in my head (I wanna know...what your thinking?) LOL.

Kris Hansen

So, Robbie and Garrett greet each other by bumping their weenus? You use a weenus to push an elevator or open a door? I'm dying here... :-D

Cloyd Hatch

Loved the Information Society video!! Totally agree that not every episode needs to about the ship exploding! We love the fun episodes!!

Sean McDaniel

This show is great! First creator I've ever contributed to on Patreon.

N+D

Great to see GW and RDMcN on the GalaxyCon stream tonight. Good to hear from Tim Russ too; very pleased to hear that he'd like to contribute to the DF podcast in the future. Wonderful tales.

Leon Zhang

Awesome episode guys!!! What do you think about having a segment for viewer questions for that week’s episode? Something like “how did you shoot that scene” kind of questions. You could get questions throughout the week and select a few to answer!

Sarah Whorley

This podcast episode explained an interaction I had with Robert Picardo at a convention 10 years ago. Robbie said Robert Picardo likes tall, statuesque women like Freya from the episode. At the time I had just gone back to school to play college volleyball at 28 and I was in the best shape of my life. My (now ex) husband and I went to take a picture with Robert. I was 6'1" or so with my heels on. Just as the photographer goes to snap the pic, Robert says to my husband "Who's the babe?" My nerdy husband was speechless. 😂😂😂

Andrew Johnston

Eddie Murphy did the white people in horror movies bit.

Mathew Sands

Even though I didn't agree--Ken's review had me rollin' lol.

Roy Spaan

"So, you just LEFT your daughter in the TV?! Yeah, well, I wanted to save her, I'm a man. I tried changing the channel, the shit didn't work." Great bit. And very true, not necessarily the black vs white people, but just GTFO! Garrett is also unconsciously channeling another bit of Eddie, in completely messing up his joke XD "He said 'gooniegoogoo'. And then he had a GI-Joe up his ass"

Roy Spaan

I doubt the guys really read these comments (still), but on the off-chance: Robert keeps talking about shadowing directors, was that something THEY agreed to? Did he ask permission, did they actively explained stuff to him? Or was he just looking over their shoulders, soaking up the information?

Roy Spaan

I kind of took the Unther being afraid of fire as him being Grendel in disguise. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, but on some sort of holo-storytelling level. At least him being in league with Grendel, or just being a classic villian, afraid of fire/light. I don't see it as a flub or something that should have been fixed, just a little bit of Disney-esque influence in a holodeck novel.

Jesse Bailey

Star Trek, starting with Next Gen, had a shadow program for actors who wanted to direct. Johnathan Frakes and LeVar Burton did this earlier. I understand that such an arrangement was rare on shows, but a great opportunity for professional development.

Chuck Kolyvas

Voyager could have been shortened to 3 seasons if the Federation had a) a robust quarantine protocol, b) any removal of safety protocols on the holodeck are approved by Tuvok/Chakotay, I'm really glad they didn't of course ;)

ST Fan CB

OMG! RDM is hat-less in this podcast! What in the sam hill is going on around here?

Christina

I’m not a big fan of this episode, but I watched it this time around. The Doc’s comedic performance is great as usual. You guys are super funny! And thanks, Robbie, for the word of the day!
