This week’s episode is Cathexis. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.  This week, Robert Beltran joins them for a short interview about this episode!

Cathexis:
After confronting a black nebula while on an expedition, Tuvok is inhabited by aliens, and Chakotay appears to be brain dead.

Spock in TOS pronounces sensor the same way as Tuvoc normally does. (Sen-sore, not sen-sur.)

Jen V

I first watched him on Benson...a long time ago! He was funny on that show.

Jen V

I always thought the British expression was "rut" not "root."

CMDR Klaas Metzel

Just noticed that this is the episode when Tuvok finally is wearing the right amount of pips (two full gold) for his LT. Senior Rank, while in all episodes before he was wearing the Lt. Cmd. Pips (two full and one half) and still was called Lieutenant all the time. My SenSORS :D Wish they would rescan the negatives and remaster the whole show, like they did with TNG. But I guess since that was a commercial flop, it will not happen any time soon.

I'm way late to the party, making my way through these episodes. I am HOOKED: they are so entertaining, funny, and fascinating. Both of you have great insights and stories and the extra material and guests are fantastic. I must say I also very much love and appreciate Robbie's reflections on the treatment of Chakotay's character. I also am inclined to believe the intentions of the writers and producers was good, but he's absolutely right: it comes across as a bunch of cishet old white men sitting around and developing his character. What a missed opportunity: it could have been so valuable to see some authentic perspectives from an indigenous framework, and real glimpses into their lifeways and ways of engaging with the world and universe, which are SO DIFFERENT from our colonized ways of being. Instead it's a cobbled-together mishmash of "well this seems like something 'An Indian' would do" and it's offensive. Not to mention that Racist Pan Flute music cue that comes in every single time. Also very much appreciate his reflections on treatment of women, and Garret's comments on Asian racism in Hollywood. Thank you both so much. Proud to be a Patron supporter. I was obsessed with Voyager as a young teen, and that young teen self is just beside himself with glee as I make my way through these. <3 <3 <3

I was watching Versailles last week and noticed the same thing, everyone except the queen (played by Elisa Lasowski, a French actress) was talking with British accents. I was like, "does France not have any actors/actresses, or is the French accent too difficult to do well, or is the British-accent just permanent subtext for 'European foreigner'?

Tammi Hoefling

If no one has yet stated this, this is the English novel "Wuthering Heights" with Healthcliff as the "man of the house," which explains the British accent of which you are referencing. It is a bit of a Gothic Romance novel where there is a spooky mystery and a romantic interest. It made me want to read Wuthering Heights (which was written in 1847 by Emily Bronte), as I preferred the writing of Emily's sister Anne. Also the story involves two feeding families which is indicative of the two fueding aliens. A "ghostly" presence on this ship also mirrors the storyline that Heathcliff believed that his house was haunted. Also, Healthcliff's romantic interest was Catherine in Wuthering Heights. Additonally, the theme of "paranoia" is also completely on par with Healthcliff's behavior in the Bronte novel.

Brian Johnson

Great podcast ep guys! I suspect Tim Russ’ pronunciation of “sensor” was an homage or throwback to Leonard Nimoy’s Spock, who pronounced it the same way.

Rich Gross

Great podcast episode! Incidentally, I don’t believe the Russian ballet troupe is called the “Bolshoi Ballet”. They’re just referred as such because they perform at the Bolshoi Theater, which, yes, simple means “Big Theater”. I have a Russian friend and we went to a ballet there and it cracked me up that that’s all the name meant.

Stephanie Baker

What a strange episode. Even after re-watching, I'm not sure which are the alien's and which are Chakotay's takeovers. I really enjoyed the fight scene on the bridge, shooting phasers and punching each other. Despite the cringe-y/ Native stuff, it was cool when the Dr knew more about the "medicine wheel" than Belanna as if it was an accepted treatment or approach. The year 1995 was very early for "Alternative Medicine" acceptance. Great podcast, even with a not-so-great episode. I liked hearing about the tape on the floor. I connect the holonovel to this episode because of the reference to "don't go on the 4th floor" as if there is a ghost or monster up there. and then there are ghosts in the episode.

Sybil Wild

Loved this episode of the podcast way more than I loved the actual episode of Voyager. The first season of Voyager was hit or miss, luckily with more hits than misses. Even though some of Chakotay's stuff is super cringey now, his character becomes indispensable and waaaay better in later seasons. To address something Garrett has said a few times before, I think Tom and Harry are very funny characters. I, at least, think the two of you are very funny on Voyager and Tom especially gets in some good lines. Harry's humor relies more on face-acting and reactions than zingers and dry wit, together you two were very funny (and are very funny now!) Great episode, y'all! I'm sure we will come across an episode that Robbie remembers any day now!

William Brandt

Love this podcast so much. I always wondered why Harry always seemed so reserved and devoid of personality. It sounds like Garret wanted so badly to inject something more into the character. It’s a shame there was such strict creative control. It would be interesting to see what Garret’s version of Harry Kim would have been. If he was anything like how Garret seems, Harry would have been a really cool and fun guy.

Jenny

The stupid recurring holonovel really did have nothing to do with the episode - it was originally scripted and *shot* for Eye of the Needle, was presumably cut for time, then was inserted into this episode. It was unfortunately semi-recurring for a bit (I remember at least one other episode in S2, and that originally it was to be used more) before thankfully disappearing. (Gorgeous set, but obviously it didn’t do anything for me! It was at least relevant/incorporated with the plot the other time I’m remembering seeing it.)

Renee M

Janeway’s holonovel seems to be a loose adaptation of Jane Eyre..? If that’s the case, the master of the house has probably got a “mad wife” locked up on the fourth floor like Mr Rochester did. Maybe this is a huge reach, but in the Bronte novel, Jane thinks there’s a ghostly presence in the house, and it turns out to be the mad wife sneaking around at night, setting fire to things... I guess that could be a parallel to the alien presence? Janeway finding out they have a malevolent alien, disembodied and wandering about... plus Jane = Janeway? Chakotay does have a bit of a Bronte male lead vibe, too... I don’t know!

Richard Moesbergen

Ok...i'm going to go against the prevailing thoughts. I really liked the holonovel. It provides an interesting view of the type of thing that Janeway finds relaxing. Victorian era household where she is the Governess/Teacher, unresolved loss/grief, mysterious 4th floor, conflict with another strong female character.....a setting where she's not in total control. It makes for some interesting plot devices for the future.

Breana Harris

I was going to say this too! There was an interesting article on startrek.com a few months ago about this holonovel and Janeway as a Gothic heroine. The wife is obviously on the 4th floor!

Breana Harris

I will defend this irrelevant Jane Eyre-plagiarized holonovel too just cause I wish there was a Counselor Troi or someone present to unpack why Janeway is doing this on the holodeck of all things . There's got to be some kind of Freudian explanation 😂 I've also been interested in the episode names. I looked up what Ex Post Facto meant after that episode and realized it's a cool Latin phrase that's hard to connect to the actual plot too. I wish there were more random Latin episode titles in later seasons, they should have kept whoever was coming up with them! This (podcast) episode was really funny & you guys are awesome.

Moonglade

Good episode I thought. My fav moments are when everyone is firing phasers on the Bridge and Tuvok loses patience and sets his phaser on wide-beam, multi-vector like, 'Screw this sh*t! Let God sort 'em out!' Always makes me laugh when that happens. Also, as a J/Cer I always enjoy the sickbay scene at the end when Janeway can't keep her hands off Chakotay. Part of me thinks the producers were playing with us again, dangling that shipper thing in front of us - and you wouldn't have seen Picard put his hands on F.O. Riker like that - but the J/C 'shipper part of me was whooping outloud :D

Speaking just for myself, I appreciate robbies desire for accurate native american portrayals, you don't gotta be so critical every time native american anything is shown or discussed. Whenever i see something inauthentic, the most it gets from me is a chuckle. - A Native American fan in California.

Matt

Lt. Tom Paris ladies and gentlemen! The true voice behind "the body guard"!

Matt

Where else can you get all the great Voyager insight, a language lesson, and a vocal minuet all in the same podcast!

Matt

Optimus Prime and the Matrix?!

Matt

Always so cool to see Chakotay! Im in the middle of one of the Voyager novels that features Chakotay quite a bit, and referencing his native american heritage.

Rebekka Hay

Are the guest interviews always so short or only at Lieutenant level? Should I ask my commanding officer for a promotion? 😉

Sony

So far, "Cathexis" and "Parallax" are the worst episodes of season one (I know there's more but it's been a while since I rewatched Voyager on Netflix). Thankfully, the next episode "Faces" is great; one of my top 3 B'Elanna episodes in the whole series. As far as "reintegrating Chakotay's consciousness", why couldn't he just go back into his own body? When Chakotay spoke about his experience in incorporeal mode, he said he eventually realized he could share a person's consciousness if he concentrated hard enough. So why did the Doctor need "50 gigaquads of memory" when Chakotay was inputting his command codes while incorporeal/ sharing someone's consciousness? Maybe Chakotay saw how hard the Doctor was working and didn't mention that he just went back in his body so the Doctor could feel like a hero. LOL

Sony

I like what Garrett and Robbie said about doing something out of generosity to clear out negative energy and bring happiness. Also, I would like to see Robbie's bike

Sony

I totally agree. But I still liked his character, especially with Tom. In the 90s, everyone young was so broken and jaded but Harry was the opposite of that. And Tom had one of the best story arcs.

N+D

I'm glad RDMcN mentioned how dark (lighting, not story) this episode was. I watched it again last night and the gloom is very noticeable (I did wonder if my screen was on the blink...)

Charity Ponton

I fall asleep to Voyager and it is because I have seen them so many times, I can hear it and see the actual imagery in my mind. It's kinda like falling asleep reading a book :)

Justin Rhoads

I'd actually say its not necessarily the actor coming out in holonovel's as it is just the characters trying to act. If I were to imagine a truly realistic holodeck type environment, I think it would become common place to ordinary people like video games or emerging VR technology. So in that sense; I suppose people would get used to getting into character without the pressure of doing it professionally or in front of an audience. After all its why they're in the holodecks in the first place no? =) And I myself actually leave the TV on going to sleep most of the time. Voyager is a common one i'll let play in the background. But I have seen it so many times throughout the years I can honestly say that I can just hear one line from a random episode and go "oh, that's the episode where _____." lol. As far as the fan reviews I am very fairly certain, unless the review was before the episode aired, that the 'teaser of the horrors to come' refers to a future episode where Janeways holodeck characters from that novel appear off the holodeck and essentially 'haunt' her. By the way, randomly noticed, I loved when either Garrett or Robbies toaster oven interrupted at 57:50. Ha!

Mark Shuler

Sage the sickbay, and perhaps a little sage on the taken over characters as well.

Renee M

Holodecks are like little private theatres. Would love to do a Tolstoy or Dostoevsky adaptation with a terrible Russian accent... at least until Garrett finishes teaching us Russian, then I could do it in the original Russian. 🤷‍♀️

Rich Gross

As lame as I consider the Native American parts of the Voyager story, I do have to defend one thing here. Robbie was in disbelief of how Torres could have thought she understood enough about the ritual after only seeing him do it. Well, she says in the scene that he taught it to her and that he asked her to do that for him if anything happened to him.

dvb@astro.princeton.edu

Isn't the holonovel meant to be a re-creation of "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James? The two ghosts in that story are then reflected in the rest of the episode as the two "ghosts" floating around the ship.

Astra Morris

Does anyone else find it odd that the Chief Engineer wouldn’t have the authority to eject the warp core? I thought it had been done in TNG, and maybe in later Voyager episodes?

Laura Johnson

Not one of my favorite episodes, either. A few things.... I did like the holonovel in that it related to the show, for me, on a haunted or spirit level. Lord Burleigh’s wife was dead (or maybe not). The Governess (Janeway’s character) is not to go to the fourth floor. Is the house haunted or is she still alive and on the fourth floor? It also sets up the return of this holonovel in another episode. I always thought that the Doctor was able to do this incredible re-integration of Chakotay’s “spirit”/brain activity only after they had figured out his spirit was floating around the ship so it wasn’t a total cop out. It was interesting that everyone jumped on board very quickly with the idea of the spirit being separate from the body and being able to exist outside the body. I agree with and love the idea that the best way to help yourself is to do something kind for someone else. I try to use this idea in my classroom and we talk about “filling others’ buckets” by doing encouraging and doing random acts of kindness for classmates. I introduce it with the picture book _Have You Filled a Bucket Today? _ Final thought....Robbie....my father in law used to own a bike and loved riding in the North Georgia mountains.

Jasmin Kesselring

I really like this podcast so much. It gives a different perspective about episodes I did not like so much and gets me thinking about stuff that is weard in episodes that I really like. I always liked Janeway's holonovel even if it does nothing to the story of the episode. I liked it so much that I cosplayed as her in Las Vegas one time:)

N+D

Incidentally, I hope you guys are catching Ethan Phillips' turn in 'Avenue 5'. Hilarious how often he slips into Neelix mode.

Craig Drebit

Back in 95 I didn't get why the Janeway character would like this kind of holonovel. But nowadays I can justify it as saying she loves a bit of Victorian cosplay in her spare time! :) Being a scientist I can for sure understand her wanting to pal around with Leonardo though.

Craig Drebit

I was wondering what ST:IV had to do with Nova Scotia! LOL cool shirt. I mentioned it on FB but it was cool to see Brian Markinson randomly show up. He's that guy that guest stars in every TV show you can think of. And if you're Canadian I believe he's been in every single Canadian show ever, either as a lead or a guest. :) If it was filmed in western Canada, he's been in it. His latest show, Tribal, is really good.

Peter Wood

Didn't realise Robbie is a biker. I'm still injured so can't get out on the bike (not a bike accident). Would be cool to know what bike/bikes he has.

Roe O'Brien

Okay re: the holonovel - The only thing I can think of is that connects it to the main plot of the episode, is the dead not being really dead? Window flying open during the rainstorm (spirits getting inside?) BECAUSE - there is more exposition on this holonovel in a later episode where we have been told the mother is dead but Lord Burley's daughter (Beatrice) is still seeing her and says she's still alive?! Though, I don't think we EVER get clarity on that. Lmao. I know it's a stretch. But alas - The only thing I could think of!

Eddie Ordaz

There not paying attention. lol They had power going out on the ship.

Roe O'Brien

Been thinking about that holonovel some more - Also lowkey ticked that THAT was the holonovel they chose for Janeway. Like, I know season 1 character development is always an ongoing and everchanging process, but when I think about who Janeway is, was that holonovel *really* something she would've went for? Later on when DaVinci came into play (which I know Kate had a hand in making happen), THAT made so much more sense to me, and was a lot more natural and fun.

Kris Hansen

I continue to be fascinated by the nuances that leap out to you, such as the way Tuvok pronounces "sensor" or the lighting in the briefing room. As a viewer, I don't notice these things. As actors and directors, are you happy or sad that I don't notice?

Kris Hansen

On a separate note, I am glad Chakotay returned as a character, but I am intrigued by the idea of Chakotay becoming a disembodied crew member who can move about the ship without being detected and take over and support crew members as needed.

Kris Hansen

I think the romance novel was also a Gothic horror story, which frequently have ghosts or people possessed by others. I'm guessing that was the connection with the rest of the story, but I agree with Robbie and Garrett, it was tenuous at best.

Charles Petrosky

Reminds me of the debate before TNG made it's debut whether we should pronounce his name Data or Data. 😜

Charles Petrosky

Well, I guess I've been pronouncing "Cathexis" wrong for ~25 years.

sexbad

Allison Liddi-Brown directed a season 6 episode called Collective, which was great all around. I remember actually being very impressed by some of the scenes and checking the credits after it was over, which is something I don't do often. It has some great space shots and suspenseful moments, so hats off to her. Hope you two will enjoy that episode when it shows up. Also, can't wait for your film Attack of the Weenus to end racism.

Sarah Ettritch

Regarding classical music having a calming effect, I remember they started playing it in a couple of subway stations in Toronto that were experiencing problems. I don't know if it made a difference, but that was the theory.

Jason M Okun

The holonovel is, perhaps, a holdover from TNG openings, with Data playing classic characters on the holodeck. One of the differences is that there was always some more meaningful tie in, especially for the character of Data. Here, Brannon may have connected the creepiness in the holonovel to that of the rest of the episode. As for the length, I wonder if the rest of the episode came in short. The accents is an entirely different topic. Frankly, I would rather have the actors speak with an English accent, than English with a French accent in movies happening in France, etc. If you cannot do the entire movie in whatever language the country where it takes place speak (think Inglorious Basterds), then just have actors speak in their normal English.

Jennifer7895

Perhaps the way you pronounce 'sensor' is a Security Chief trait as I recall Michael Dorn saying it that same way on TNG

Dawn Graves

I love the clips of you guys watching each episode. You've been showing a bit more of that and I dig it.

Harpo1987

I know I'm a week behind, but a quick note - I respectfully take some issue with Garrett's characterization of Neelix as having Tourrette's. I have a tic disorder myself (and work on disability rights professionally), and I think he is operating off of an almost entirely inaccurate stereotype. I would be glad to discuss it in more depth if anyone from the show would be willing to listen.

Heather Kim

Enjoyed hearing about your wardrobe on this episode. I'm very interested in hearing about Garrett's Wonder Woman shirt from the previous episode - Heroes & Demons. It's awesome!

Bree Boehlke

Really enjoyed this episode! I am behind a little because I am trying to rewatch the Voyager episode before I watch the podcast. Baseball coming back has thrown me off. But I really enjoyed the discussions, the interview and the videos of both of you watching the episode. Very fun. I am thankfully able to work from home, but self isolating so much, this podcast has really been super enjoyable and something I look forward to. Thank you!

Kev1959

Hi guys ...I'm way behind as well.....I'm really enjoying your podcasts. I always loved Voyager when it was on and never missed an episode. I have watched several episodes again over the years but they were usually my favourites or 'the biggy' episodes that had big impacts on the show in general. Now, thanks to you I'm rewatching every episode right along with you. Thank you so much for doing this!

Jon-Michael Adkins

Diggin' Robbie's shirt in this one. That's how I roll.

Emily Hansen

The holonovel is based on Turn of the Screw, which is about possession... so there is a tiny bit of a relation to the story. But definitely not explained well enough.

Bethany Avery

I remember being very excited to learn what Janeway did for fun. But then again geeking out to Jane Eyre like stories is natural for me.

Mathew Sands

My theory on the opening....time filler----they had a script that didn't take up the full 46 mins...so they filled it with random holo-novel garbage?

Roy Spaan

is it? That's interesting. In regards to the guys' and some of the commenters opinions, why does everything have to have a purpose and meaning? And even then, I appreciate some hidden meanings a lot more than overly obvious things. It invites further exploring. Similarly to Robert googling Cathexis. If the episode was simply called "blocked feelings" or something, we wouldn't have went googling and finding a 'portal' to other interesting things.

Tiffiny Lawrie

I love that Garrett's example of random British accents is Ever After 😆 It's one of my very favourite movies and I think part of its charm is the random mix of French setting, Italian fashion, and English accents 😂

Katarina Galvan

Sens-urs or sens-oars. Even in Lower Decks it's pointed out. LOL

ST Fan CB

The reason Tom Paris had the first instance of suspicious behavior is because the behavior was changing course. Tom is the pilot so who else would change the course of the ship? Much ado about nothing there. What kills me about the holonovel is that they spent untold amounts of money on this set for no reason. I am sure that they could have constructed a new set for Voyager or spend it going on location for a more realistic scene. Or at least get Garrett some new boots for crying out loud instead of forcing him to pay for them out of his own pocket. P.S. RDM is correct in his pronunciation.

Eleanor Capaldi

I just happened to play a ST TOG ep, and following on from watching this recap noticed that Spock says "CensOR" too. Maybe, if not a coincidence, Tim's pronunciation was an homage :)

Rachael Etka

Omg, when Robbie was talking about glancing at Kate's butt I literally lol'd. Every single character on this show has a dump truck ass haha! I wish I could post a gif I have of Robert getting caught checking out Kate's butt... ;-)
