The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Elogium. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Elogium:

Neelix faces a difficult decision when Kes prematurely enters the Ocampan reproductive cycle, and Janeway considers the consequences of intimacy among the crew.

I am living for garrett's Janeway impressions - i am like... Years behind but I swear to god if he ditched this because of one hater I will be livid

Richard Heck

Thank you for your sacrifice of watching Elogium.

Jan Kreft

Fun Fact: according to Wikipedia this episode was supposed to be the final of season 1

Christopher Collins

Boy I am glad that season 1 of Voyager did not end with this episode. This explains a lot though as far as the acting goes for Kes, Neelix and Tom Paris dynamic. I am not a big fan of this particular episode by I think this podcast episode is far more insightful than the actual Voyager episode itself.

Scott Adams

Garrett, never stop doing the Janeway impression. It's brilliant and so accurate.

Steve Hulac

Another voice in support of Garrett’s impressions. They are the BEST!

Lindsey

Maybe someday closed captions with the video??!!

I loved everything Robbie said this week about how they made birth (or Kes' fertility stage) so ugly. He was spot-on! I guess they liked the weirdness of it all but didn't think through how a species could possibly survive like that. I've also been frustrated for years by how birth is portrayed on sci-fi... already now we have epidurals, you'd think in the future there would be something at least that good! Oh, and Wildman's husband was Ktarian, so that's why the pregnancy wasn't detectable earlier... I think they mention that on the show at some point. Anyway... really great insights this week (as well as Garrett's flight attendant story). Loving this podcast.

I only remembered this morning that I have the book 'Star Trek Voyager Companion' by Paul Ruditis, so I looked up what it said about Wildman's pregnancy: "It seems odd that Wildman would just discover that she is pregnant by her husband six months into their mission. We will later learn that the father is Ktarian, which could account for the difference in prenatal development."

Elisabeth Westner

Ok, I love Garrett's impressions a ton, but the one thing I'll say is this: his Janeway is a little too high-pitched. If it were lower it'd be perfect. :)

Elisabeth Westner

I don't care how much you two liked this episode, it will always be my Spock's Brain episode for Voyager. Blechhhhhhhhhhh. Way worse than Threshold. And you can fight me on that one.

Lenny Corbett

Robbie just can't seem to accept that Tom Paris is not himself and that he has character defects! He's a bit of a womanizer! So what? He overcomes these defects as grows as a character.

Caroline Aching

Garrett's impressions are so awesome!!! Never stop!!

I also assumed that Neelix and Kes were never intimate. It was always clear to me that they were waiting for this. I choose to believe that Neelix wasn't a creep. I think it is unfair to judge Neelix for his reaction to the idea of becoming a parent. Its not like they had a grown up conversation about it before.

jeff lang

This episode was worth it for the cubes on a plane sorry alone. Well done Garrett for speaking up in the right way.

Karen

With regard to the Indiscrete Shipboard Fraternization line, that one took me back to middle school (pre-Voyager so it wasn't inspired by the show) where our teachers referred to that as over-manifestation of romantic affection.

marsbitrona

It’s so appropriate that Garrett was wearing a Voyager visual effects department hat because Elogium features, I think, the first fully CG creatures in the series.

Sarah Allen

Just listened to this one and I can’t BELIEVE you didn’t go to town on the elephant-in-the-room plot hole... Assuming the Ocampans have two genders with one capable of having children (which the ep certainly suggests), it makes NO SENSE that each woman can only have one child in her lifetime - the species would have become extinct long ago! You need a birth rate over 2 for them to survive! 🤦‍♀️

Nichole Alvarez

Just joined a week ago, but I HAD to make a few comments. Samantha Wildman . . . consider this - the father of her baby is a different species. Do we know what the gestation period is for that species? It could be twice as long as a human, so it may take twice as long for her to realize? And, just because the Captain didn't find out until season two, does not mean that she herself didn't know. She chose note to tell. Kess and Neelix - A couple can have "relations" outside of a mating urge. I found a quote below from DC Fontana regarding Vulcans: Vulcans mate normally any time they want to. However, every seven years you do the ritual, the ceremony, the whole thing. The biological urge. You must, but any other time is any other emotion—humanoid emotion—when you're in love. When you want to, you know when the urge is there, you do it.

Donna S Runyon

Agreed with Robbie on this one that they made procreation gross. Also what always bothered me on this was that if the Ocampa only procreate one time then wouldn't the species population just keep getting smaller and smaller

Ren

Don't listen to the haters, Garrett, your impressions are flawless!
