The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Elogium. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Elogium:

Neelix faces a difficult decision when Kes prematurely enters the Ocampan reproductive cycle, and Janeway considers the consequences of intimacy among the crew.

i enjoy voyager's ambient engine sound more than the other ships. there's a funny bit in the show Lower Decks'where they're all trying to replicate different ship engine sounds by mouth. i do remember on my initial watch of the show on tv that i noticed the hum of the engine and found it particularly soothing

Kathrine Rieger

i agree about the Mulgrew impression, but the Doctor is on point and so is the Paris impression

Kathrine Rieger

i watched it as a teenager and always wanted the j/c thing to happen, while having a constant crush on paris. i've learned recently that the c/7 thing was a dare/trick between j ryan and her boyfriend/ writer (or producer, not really sure the details), i've always assumed that the reason they didn't link j+c was because it was too 90's/tv show obvious

So you've mentioned in previous episodes that they filmed a number of episodes that were *supposed to* be in Season 1 (and you didn't get paid the S2 rate). This is one of those episodes. It was filmed for S1 before 'Twisted' and what was supposed to be the S1 finale, 'The 37s'. You can see the production schedule here: (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Voyager?so=search#Season_2) So Samantha Wildman's baby is somewhat in the right timeframe.

iSuzane

Never liked how jealous Neelix is about Kes with anyone (mostly Paris). That kind of behaviour is off- putting but sadly exists in the real world. Loved to see the beginning of Samantha Wildman.

Dee McGee

I'm not the only one that loves Garrett's Kate Mulgrew impersonation, am I? Edited to add: Not sure how may of your listeners are on the younger side, but Garrett might have considered a more PG13 explanation of the reproduction process.

Suzanne Hollifield Eller

I’ve never liked any of the skirt hounds they put on Star Trek except Kirk. All the rest seemed sad imitations. Eventually the skill of the actors pulled the characters away from that horrible stereotype, but it is as unfair to do that to men as it is to sexualize the women. That isn’t to say there can’t be flirting and normal preening/seductive behavior, but one reason Dukat is so yukky is his smarmy predatory attitude. No need to give the heroes the same.

Mark Scheuern

Neelix is pretty rude and dismissive of the doctor considering he saved his life when his lungs were stolen.

Rich Gross

Robbie was more right than Garrett again! Don’t get thrown off by the Netflix synopses. They all appear to be written by someone who only watched the first minute of each episode.

Jason Self

I, for one, like Garrett's impersonations.

N+D

Just watching the video and I'll tell what I find relaxing about the show - not so much the sound (although that's an important part), but the muted colour palette, and the lighting. There's a lot of grey on the ship, and not a lot of colour in general aside from the uniforms, engineering, the LCARS displays and (especially) the sickbay - but the colour palette that's used is very soothing, almost austere. Similarly with the lighting; it's a good show to watch late at night.

Cristian Popa

Not sure if it's a thing, but I feel like that intro should be described as "radio smooth". :))

Stephanie Baker

Kes' Elogium experience makes me go Eww! I do like it when Star Trek explores Love and Sex. The podcast was great. I was laughing out loud.

kerry shiraki

Robbie shouldnt get so bent out of shape when the writers give Paris flaws. It made him more interesting and more real. It allows the viewers to root for him when he did something good, and get frustrated when he messed up. He eventually matures and becomes the person that Janeway thought he could be.

Christopher Collins

This was news to me. I did not realize that the character Samantha Wildman was named after a girl who gave a Kidney Transplant. I did not realize that the character studied Zoology. I never realized that Samantha Wildman’s focus on the show was Zoology and that was how she was introduced onto Voyager. Like the Zoology plot never really gets brought up too much after this episode.

Christopher Collins

I love Garrett’s ASRM introduction to this episode. I had no clue the little facts about ASRM prior to this podcast episode. I did not realize that it got the term back in 2010. I always wondered where the Term ASRM derived from because I remember starting to see all these YouTube’s start using ASRM all the time and it just kept going.

Christopher Collins

I always thought of the ship sounds on the different Gene Roddenberry Star Trek shows from the films to the early 2000’s had a ASMR qualities to the ambient noises to help find soothing like the bridge console sounds or Engineering or how the ship sounds as it is passing at warp or impulse as ASMR.

Christopher Collins

I loved Robert Duncan McNeil’s synopses of this episode. It is impressive that he was dead on that this is a Kes episode. This is definitely not my favorite episode and deserves to be made fun of. This is unusual in the 1990’s to directly discuss sex the way this episode does and getaway talking about it without necessarily showing it. Then they made aliens that resemble sex sperms.

Christopher Collins

I never really considered the color palette of the interior of the ship or the LCARS displays as soothing. I always considered some of the sound effects such as the Transporter room, the bridge consoles, engineering sounds that repeat in a particular pattern or phaser sound effects, Klingon or Romulan vessels cloaking and decloaking as ASMR for me.

Christopher Collins

I have always enjoyed hearing Garrett’s impersonations even at Star Trek Conventions. One of his highlights. I am glad more people are noticing it because of the Delta Flyer’s Podcast. Maybe it will help Garrett get recognized to do more jobs because he would be great for a voice actor for shows and video games. Even audio books.

Christopher Collins

After this podcast episode I think you should get Nancy Hower on this Podcast. I was completely unaware of anything outside of her role as Samantha Wildman. I did not realize that Nancy Hower could do voice impersonations of Janeway, had a band, was a writer & producer. I just never looked her up. I was more interested in the character Naomi Wildman portrayed by Scarlet Polmers.

Christopher Collins

“Radio Smooth.” I like that. I have never heard that terminology before. That is what that introduction was. It was DJ Radio Smooth.

Christopher Collins

I always thought this was odd that we never see Kes again with this yellow hand thing on Voyager. Because Kes does have a baby in an alternate universe in the 3rd season episode After and Before. The bugs was odd to me and I thought it was odd once they get away from all the space sperm aliens that Kes was not left sick from eating too much and odd things like bugs.

Christopher Collins

What do you think were there instead of bugs for Jennifer as Kes to eat? Chocolate bugs? Was it just CGI bugs and just has to pretend she is eating something?

Samuel Beardsley

Seems fitting that this was as... weird... as the episode itself :P Honestly, I usually skip Elogium.

Matt

I was waiting for Robbie and Garrett to try and say, "Elogium" like a hundred times with different inflections and accents..LOL

Matt

Today's Winner! Neelix and the Lettuce!

Lizzie

I really enjoy your impressions Garrett! The podcast wouldn’t be the same without them, so please continue.

Julia Carter

I never thought it strange that Ensign Wildman was pregnant or that she just found out. When talking to Janeway she says something like "The mission was only supposed to be three weeks" which led me to believe she knew she was pregnant from the beginning. She could very well be 4-5 months along at this point and because of the events decided it was time to tell because they'd never reach home before her baby was born.

Rich Gross

That’s a really good point and that idea makes me want to go rewatch that scene with that thought in mind. It still wouldn’t explain why she didn’t mention it sooner, but it would make a lot more sense than her just then finding out.

N+D

I agree that the podcast gets a little off-track and woolly at times. That's part of the charm, I guess. That said, I wouldn't mind it being a little tighter, but some of the digressions develop into great discussions.

Craig Drebit

When the time times I hope it's possible to have Scarlett Pomers as a guest on the podcast to talk about her time as Naomi and what's she's up to today. :)

ryeiverr

Robbie might be right about Samantha Wildman's pregnancy. I checked and it seems like the stardates are about 8 months apart. However, it's possible as the father is Ktarian that the gestation period is longer and it just took Wildman this long to built up the courage to tell the captain. So not necessarily a plot hole.

ryeiverr

PS: Also, having Nancy Hower on the podcast would be amazing. I'd love to hear her thoughts on the episode "Once Upon a Time"

Laura Johnson

I agree. Yes, Paris had flaws. Everyone loves a comeback or redemption story though. As hard as it is (now) to go back and watch him through his flaws it have the character somewhere to go and allowed for growth.

Nathaniel Lawson

I look forward to these podcasts every week. I’ve been a huge fan of this show for over a decade and I literally watch it every night before bed. Hearing that other fans do the same makes feel a little more normal, despite what my wife thinks! As a parent of 7, I really appreciated this episode and agree that Tuvoks summary was perfect and character-fitting. I was always curious if Robbie or Garrett were parents and it was really cool to learn that ‘Mr. Paris’ has children of his own. PS - don’t apologize Garrett and Robbie for making these tangents and extra little stories, I appreciate and relate with them as much as I do the content about the episodes!

Cristina LoCurto

I feel like I remember reading that Ensign Wildman was supposed to tell the captain in season 1 that she was pregnant, but it was an episode that essentially got moved to Season 2 after filming. I'm not sure how true that is though, but it would make sense then. Plus, the other thing to remember just in general is that Naomi Wildman is half human/half Ktarian which, do we know how long a half human/half ktarian baby gestates? It could be longer than the 9 months for a normal human.

Moonglade

Kate Mulgrew looking at Robert Beltran's lips in this episode - :thunk: turned me on to that whole J/C thing. I couldn't take my eyes off either of them each time they shared a scene :D Oh, and Chakotay's fascination with Janeway's hair is a popular fan fiction trope. J/C fiction writers reckon it's because that Janeway up-do /bun of steel is so intricate and bound up, Chakotay longs to take it down - to free her from all sorts of constraints and/or responsibilities, even if for only a short time. Witness how he handles her long hair in "Resolutions" for example.

Lindsey

Are there closed captions I dont know about?

Megan Hurwitt

Robbie, tell Rebecca that we have the same Joybird chairs in our living room!

Karen Chuplis

RObbie cracks me up. I'd say we are like maybe 6 months into the voyage. BUT, Wildman's husband is another species. We have no idea how the biological works with them. Maybe with that species their little guys may hang out way longer before attaching. As we go forward we see that there is sped up growth in the pregnancy and evolution of the baby. So, we can't really equate this to a human/human biological example. IMO.

Kris Hansen

I always thought that Voyager "rolling on its back" in submission was a weird concept in space, in which there is no up or down.

Janet Potts

Frankly, I thought the whole "if I don't get pregnant now, I'll never be able to have a baby" thing was the stupidest plot device, ever. Unless the Ocampa give birth to multiple offspring in their one and only fertility cycle or, as some creatures on earth do, the female stores the sperm so she can fertilize eggs at will, the notion that a 2 gender species has only 1 chance to give birth to a single child means that species will soon become extinct. Mathematically, you won't have enough offspring to even replace the parents and keep the population stable. Every generation there will be 1/2 the number of people to procreate. And that's assuming that every child born lives long enough to have a child of their own. Oh, and Garrett, love the impersonations. When I first heard you do Janeway, I thought it wasn't very accurate, but after watching an episode of Voyager right after the podcast, I was like, damn! That really *is* the way she sounds!

Kris Hansen

The Ocampa are on the path to extinction. If every female can get pregnant only once, then by definition they are failing to replicate their numbers. Further, if they can only get pregnant within a certain window, some females would not have the chance to get pregnant. Finally, the six-hour mating cycle with required parental involvement further lessen the chance of success and the risk that a predator or other dangerous event would kill the female, her mate and one or both parents. They should have died out by now.

Kris Hansen

On a separate note, why would a species that only live 7 years have a 6-day mating requirement? It would be more logical that the mating interaction be swift, perhaps even a brush of hands in a hallway. Wouldn't that have made a fun episode? Plus, creatures who are relatively short-lived tend to have a lot of babies. Once she was of age, Kes should have been a baby factory.

Sony

The lifeforms were aligned a certain way. But yeah, I always found it strange how (in most Scifi shows) all of the different alien ships are always aligned the same way (pitch, roll and yaw) as if they're cars facing each other on a road.

Sony

Janeway and Chakotay should appear in ST: Picard as a married couple.

Janet Potts

All TV shows in the US are required to have closed captions for the hearing impaired. And all TVs 13" and larger are required to have closed captioning decoders. Somewhere in your TV's settings is n option to turn on closed captioning and to choose the language that the closed captioning displays in. I always have the closed captioning turned on since I've had a hearing impairment for most of my adult life. For shows that aren't live, I'd say that they are pretty accurate. Live action captioning is a crap shoot.

Janet Potts

Exactly! Short life span = short reproduction cycle + lots of offspring in each cycle. Long life span = long reproduction cycle + few offspring. Species that don't live long need to reproduce many more offspring in the hopes that enough survive to adulthood and pass their genes on to the next generation. Long lived species can afford to have longer reductive cycles and fewer children at one time because they will have a lot more opportunities to reproduce over the course of their lives.

Jennifer7895

I am shocked no one mentioned that in the scene when Kes was cleaning up her bowls and things quickly for Neelix pops in, Jennifer's shoe gets suck on her little scrap of a skirt.

Lindsey

Awesome! Thanks for replying!

Sony

Same. I liked her a lot. And Neelix was a great Godfather.

Sony

The word "Joybird chair" makes me think of a gaming chair with a joystick and throttle for flying aircraft and spaceships. That would be so Tom Paris!

Sony

Darwin would have a conniption fit if he saw this episode.

Scott Fintel

Love the tangent discussions, especially about parenthood. Great to hear similar stories articulated well. Thanks for going off topic

Maggie Metz

Great work guys! Keep going off on tangents!!

Janet Potts

Sorry, didn't realize you meant the podcast. I have been casting it to my TV which allows me to hear the sound via a Bluetooth device that is connected to it and that broadcasts the sound directly into my hearing aids. That's helped a lot. Which also reminds me of a comment that Garrett made about how watching someone's mouth is a sign of sexual attraction. It could be that or, like me, it helps you better understand what people are saying when you're hearing impaired. In particular, I have trouble with consonants at the beginning and ending of words. More than once I've responded to something someone's asked me and gotten a WTF look from them because whatever I said had little to do with their question. Oops.

Travis Smalley

Garrett I love your impersonations of The Doctor and Captain Janeway. I live for your impersonations of them. They are sooooo funny!!!! I can't get enough of it. I would love you to perform a one man episode read through.

Krystian Aparta

Procreation! I knew there had to be a reason my boyfriend and I were having sex! Now that I've realized this, our sex life can be so much more purposeful. Keep your fingers crossed, guys! ;)

s.oneill2020

I love the impersonations too. :)

s.oneill2020

One thing about the discussion about the Timeline. Caretaker is on Stardate 48315.6, Elogium is on Stardate 48921.3... If i understand the System the right way, it is about 6 to 7 Month. Voyager most time was constant in telling us, 1000 Stardate-Units is ~1 year.

Christina De Clerck-Szilagyi

I don't know if anyone said this before, but don't read Samantha Wildman as having just found out that she was pregnant, she is telling her boss that she's pregnant, she's probably known for a couple of months, at least. Women generally don't announce a pregnancy until the third month at least, because it is at that point that 1) she will start to show and so the reality of it is unavoidable and 2) most miscarriages occur in the first trimester, so you don't want to announce it publically until after that danger is past.

K

Yes!!! I forget all of fandom+the actors aren’t familiar with the very standard fanfic tropes :D

K

Just want to thank you, Garrett, for being inclusive of genderqueer and gender nonconforming folks, and you, Robbie, for being inclusive of ace folks and challenging the traditional (western culture, at least!) roles shown in the space-spermy-alieny-thingies and the aversion to women’s sexuality. Always a roll of the dice to listen to artists outside of their work— you never really know if you’re going to think “holy cow, this person actually considers a whole diversity of people in their worldview” or “welp, this person doesn’t think people like me are actual human beings”. Infinite diversity in infinite combinations! <3

Leslie Banta

Yep. The spaceship background noise / ambient engine rumble is a definite soothing sound for me.

LT Turner Jr

This was such a fun episode to watch. Great stuff. :)

Roy Spaan

Nowadays I usually play some Netflix or YouTube videos (often Star Trek) when falling asleep. At whisper levels though. I'm not sure if it HELPS me sleep, but I kinda feel uncomfortable when I DONT have them on. Though originally I started specifically with Voyager's warpcore. The hum really relaxes me. If I take into account that going to the barber has a similar effect on me, and when I was a kid my mom used to cut my hair, my personal view is that these feelings might be a throwback to pleasant memories. Being relaxed while watching your favorite show. Being whispered to is quite likely to be a positive experience as well. Similarly to how smoking isn't necessarily enjoyable itself, but the action of smoking gets associated with taking a break, or being in a nice social environment, and therefor the same positive feeling gets linked to having a cigarette. Just my two cents worth of theory.

Roy Spaan

Garrett, buddy, sorry, but I have to agree with Kate Mulgrew, who told you once, your impression sounds like she's on helium. Most of them do. You've got the inflections down, I can completely hear who you're impersonating, but there's always the touch of helium. Which I suppose can be compared to nails on a chalkboard. I won't stop listening to the podcast because of that, but for my money, you can leave them out.

Miki Tracey

I know I'm commenting way late, but that whole ASMR thing was only interesting in that...well... have you ever heard the statement "he/she could read me the phone book" or "i'd listen to him/her reading the phone book" ? Some voices do that. You previously commented on Jennifer's voice is mature (which i think you meant deep) But you really did have a bunch of good voices to listen to. Kate, Jennifer, Garret, Tim and Robert all had a solid and gentle sound with a small range and inflection. Nothing against Robbie, i love your voice but you can't stand up against Kate.

Sara Wolovick

Late to the game but uh....I don't think Kes has a vagina. The mating ritual as described makes zero sense if it involves what we think of as cis hetero penetrative sex. It would just be impossible to do that for that long. It's also implied that the DNA transmits through the hands. And we know that when Ocampa actually have babies the fetus develops in a sac growing off the female Ocampa's back. None of this indicates the presence of a vagina. So I don't know what Kes and Neelix do, but I definitely don't think it involves a vagina. Additionally, as other people noted, people generally wait until after the first trimester to announce a pregnancy, and in a later episode with some time travel, it's confirmed that Samantha Wildman knew that she was pregnant while they were still in the Alpha Quadrant.

Cass

I agree the big alien being a female would have made sense. This would be consistent with large female animals/insects as well as ships being referred to as 'she' in English too. The little ones seemed more sperm like as mentioned too. As for Kes, I used to think her physical reaction was different because it came so early. Also, I thought the joining was with the hands... at least Ocampa to Ocampa. Because Kes' fertile state seemed very unique, I was a bit surprised that mating with other species was even feasible (although I guess we later find out that it is, blahg).

Megan Moore

As always Robbie was way to hard on himself. Just because Neelix thinks Tom is not to be trusted with women doesn’t mean it’s true. Tom and Kes’ interaction was completely innocent. Also I’ve never left a friend after helping them without saying bye. So that didn’t feel weird to me either. Yes in hindsight Tom should’ve said something to Neelix too, just a simply hi/bye or even a friendly wave etc. but I thought it was all fine. In fact I thought Neelix was MUCH in the wrong and the only reason he isn’t jealous of the doctor is because he’s a hologram. Neelix was by far my least favorite in some of these early episodes but ONLY because of the jealousy. In the episodes that didn’t have anything to do with jealousy I loved him.

ST Fan CB

I love Garrett's impersonation of Janeway. Keep it the same and do it more. Watching RDM "mansplaining" to women of when and how they should know that they are pregnant was very difficult. No bueno dude.

Will H

Second the love of Garrett's Janeway. Keep doing it the same. Honestly all of your Trek impressions are amazing, including Neelix and the Doctor!

Sherri Stevens

I would love to know who we can be mad at for the decision not to give us the happiness of seeing Janeway and Chakotay together by the end! Lol I love this podcast guys! Sherri 🙂

Sherri Stevens

Yes! Jennifer’s voice was calm and soothing. And I loved listening to the way Chakotay talked, can’t explain why 🙂

Christina

Not going to lie, I’ve been watching Star Trek at bedtime for many, many years in order to help facilitate sleep in conjunction with sleep meds. It really does work! Kes eating everything in sight in her quarters is my favorite Kes scene ever! So brilliantly funny! I don’t believe Kes and Neelix ever had sex. She was wasn’t even 2 in this episode. Let’s be honest, Tom’s intentions towards Kes weren’t exactly innocent, even if he hadn’t realized it as of yet. With that said, I never really liked that they wrote that arc about Tom. For me, Tom didn’t seem the type to go after another man’s woman.

Shobha Kulkarni

My pet peeve with Voyager is the constant flirting between J&C. The actors keep deep-diving into it too. They all keep leading us on heartlessly knowing this goes nowhere. Why? Now, I only started watching Voyager during the pandemic, so I blitzed through it in months. Yet, I was hit really, REALLY hard. I am angry and disappointed at everyone who acted as the iceberg and made it crash land instead on 7/C. My heart goes out to the people who were lead on consistently for 7 years only to end up at a dead end.

Lisa Gunn

I love this episode so much, this was the first episode where Kes took the lead and we explored her species background and saw a side of her which was emotional and vulnerable and Jennifer did an awesome job!!
