The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Deadlock. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Deadlock:
While attempting to evade pursuing Vidiian warships, Voyager enters a plasma field with disastrous consequences for the ship and crew.

omg, my 13 year old self just exploded with Tom saying he's a hard D, i'm sorry/not sorry

Kathrine Rieger

also, the most important man in starfleet history miles o'brien frequently rolled his sleeves up in ds9

Loretta Lane

That quote about "weird is part of the job" got quoted at least weekly in my house growing up.

RemiTheNerd

Because Deck 15 is the bottom of the ship, so it seems to be more prone to damage, it's that very bottom underbelly! But Robbie you're right it gets hit a lot lol

RemiTheNerd

Is it just me or does anyone else talk to Garrett and Robbie while watching these? lol I interject my thoughts and opinions or point something out if there's a detail about a future episode lol Just me? yeah okay lol

Dee McGee

Riker had his signature "What the hell is going on?!"

Rich Gross

I’m sorry to disagree with Garrett, but I don’t think it would have made sense to put B’Elanna and Harry together. I see B’Elanna as more of a female equivalent of Tom, in that they are both a bit edgy “bad girl/boy” personalities. I see the character of Harry as being more sweet and innocent, and occasionally naive and less “street-smart”. I don’t think Harry would have had the same charm if he lost those qualities.

Ericka Birkenstein

The face Garrett makes after he says he's okay is so relatable this week.

Nancy Lapierre

Robbie's dog snoring during the rewatch 😍

Stephanie Baker

I really liked the deep dives during the recap into how scenes were filmed, especially Tom’s running and Harry’s drop roll. Thank you.

Craig Drebit

Best limerick of the year! PS: I believe deck 15 is the bottom of the ship so where all the good stuff is :)

Katie Puterbaugh

Another great episode! Always look forward to your recaps each week! I was just a kid when this episode came out and remember being so sad that Harry died and was happy that they didn't actually kill him off. I always wondered How odd it must have felt for Harry being the "other" Harry at first and how long it took for that feeling to fade and move forward.

Edward Whelan

Harry must risk life and limb He's blown into space, it looks grim But his double takes a trip From the alternate ship And Voyager gets a new Ensign Kim

Redux

Voyager has 15 decks in total, 15 (Ventral Maintenance) is the bottom deck. I think it makes sense this deck would often be in trouble since alien ships would target the "belly" of the ship.

Matt

Today's winner is.....Rufus!

Mike Gu

Innocent inner детка! Love it.

Christopher Collins

I could have seen B’Elanna get soft if the writers chose to get dating with Harry Kim. But honestly I think the writers should have gotten Seven of Nine with Harry Kim and let that relationship last a lot longer than they did. But instead the writers did a Geordi La Forge move similar to Doctor Leah Brahms relationship in TNG once Seven said let’s copulate. I don’t think Seven of Nine saying that so early on in the show helped how fans looked at Jeri Ryan at Star Trek Conventions nor other shows than ran with it like Dilbert with the 7 of 9 alarm clock.

Christopher Collins

I think the limerick wins over the haiku for this week. That limerick by Rebecca & Robbie was so well done it sounded very professional. I was impressed. Rebecca must be good as a writer.

Christopher Collins

I thought it was funny how Janeway fell out of the chair too. I thought Robbie was going to say they cut it and Janeway has one hair style and put a wig on top of Janeway to get back into the chair. Or the other thank I thought Robbie was going to say was someone was off screen pulling Janeway by the legs to get her out of her chair to show shake but I thought in this case why would a crew member do that when it is easy enough for Kate to slide out of the chair.

Christopher Collins

I think this is my favorite Voyager episode of season 2.

Christopher Collins

I don't understand why Harry Kim could not bring The second EMH program from Deadlock to the other Voyager and then there would be two EMH's and would have saved the crew had they faced problems later on in the show and then there could have been 2 EMH programs on the show and would have saved Tom Paris the problems he has being the temporary doctor in the episode Message in the Bottle.

Karen

Technically everyone on the crew died in this episode when the 2nd Voyager blew up. But since Harry died in Emanations, he has still died more than the others. And now I'm wondering which character died the most throughout the series.

Christopher Collins

I am not sure about Deck 15 but there is an episode in Season 6 called The Haunting of Deck Twelve.

Christopher Collins

I never realized Tuvok did not include Harry Kim's death in the damage report.

Christopher Collins

That is interesting how in some scenes Jennifer would run to her position in a panning to go from standing to the biobed.

Christopher Collins

That is one of the best last liners in Star Trek to end an episode. "Mr. Kim, we're Starfleet officers. Weird is part of the job."

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

Ok. After re-watching the one of my favorite episodes. I say that both "Voyager" are real. As both ships were losing anti-matter. If I am wrong; please explain. Thanks.

Scarlett Moriel

Deck 15 is the lowest deck, essentially, the "belly" of the ship. Just by the law averages, there are more structural problems there; more outer hull.

Scarlett Moriel

I never thought of this episode as Harry's death, largely because EVERYONE dies. Also, I'm on the same page that the "shiny" Voyager is the original, since the Vidians COULD detect that one. In that sense, it means that only Harry and Naomi survived.

Christopher Collins

I was 2 weeks away from being 6 years old when this episode Deadlock aired. I remember this being a pretty intense and impressive episode back when it aired. I would say Deadlock was the equivalent of TNG’s Cause & Effect.

Scarlett Moriel

Robbie has 3 children, I do believe. I assume he would know that unless a pregnancy is high risk, there's no walk down the corridor to grab a bite to eat restrictions. In fact, walking, and, indeed eating are doctor recommended.

Scarlett Moriel

Finally. I suggest we refer to them as hakuchimoyas, it really rolls off the tongue.

Shanyn Behn

Tom died in Threshold. It totally counts. Kes even kissed him after he died.

Shanyn Behn

Another do over is the Ensign Wildman is a scientist. Fixing things would not be her job, unless it was a side job. I would have liked a scene with Neelix about her actual job.

Christopher Collins

It might be Harry Kim but the whole crew dies in Timesless and then is reset. We see 7 of 9 and the whole crew die and reset several in the episode Relativity. We see Holographic crew characters die such as Worst Case Scenario or Pathfinder. The Doctor dies in a holographic simulation in the Flesh and Blood Part I or II. Admiral Janeway dies in Endgame Part II.

Lisa Minnesma

Robbie is right about there being a lot of episodes in season 3 starting with "D". There were 3 episodes. Dreadnought, Death Wish and Deadlock

Lisa Minnesma

Also, I like how in the thumbnail image for this video you can see the holiday Christmas mug! I'm so jealous! I want to buy one!

Lisa Minnesma

Another thing, which might help Garrett feel better about Janeway not reacting to the news of Harry's death. She was in combat mode and was expecting to hear news of deaths and injuries from the casualties report from Tuvok. But to hear that someone "disappeared" is unusual and strange.

Megan Hurwitt

Robbie I can hear your dog snoring

N+D

Elsewhere in the show, Darkling, Demon, Drone, Dark Frontier, Dragon's Teeth, Drive...

Michelle Z

For the record, Garrett, Harry was the A story in my heart! That's how I remember it.

KariAnna Bedsole

How do you even find baby actors? Are they babies of crew members or something? Are there special agents just to find babies? I have so many questions about this lol someone help

TheDeltaFlyers

Casting directors keep files of people interested in having their babies/kids in tv or film. So when a show needs a baby, the casting director goes to their files and finds one that fits the shows needs. -Robbie

Lisa Minnesma

Garrett, I think we were all surprised by the Chakotay/Seven pairing. (For me personally, I wasn't a fan. I liked her better with Axum from Unimatrix Zero)

Chad Heroman

Every ship and crew in Delta Quadrant should automatically self destruct if an Vidian takeover is imminent. That way, they know there is no point to take over the ship, all of the fresh organs will be destroyed and their own ships are in danger. If the first 2 or 3 ships did, there would be no attacks

Deanna

I have no idea if the writers researched this or not, but there are several benefits for a baby being delivered naturally (instead of transporting the baby out in the first place or c-section). On the show, it was clear that transporting the baby out had risks for the baby (and one of them actually died from it) so that would explain why they didn't do it right away. In real life with natural delivery, the baby receives beneficial bacteria, it squeezes fluid out of baby's lungs, less likely to have complications in future pregnancies, decreases child's risk of childhood asthma and obesity, less likely to suffer from subsequent fertility problems. Plus in real life, c-sections carry greater risk so it's generally speaking, a last resort.

Kris Hansen

The sci-fi series Farscape also featured the ship and crew being duplicated. I wonder which episode aired first?

Kris Hansen

That's a t-shirt! "We're Star Fleet officers. Weird is part of the job."

Holly Smith

Man, that was some episode! I’d forgotten just how good it was. Now to watch the podcast to get they guys’ hot takes!

Elizabeth webb

This is one of my favorite episodes. It's a solid episode. I have a haiku for this episode: Wildman delivers two Voyagers overlapping Janeway self-destructs

Laura K.

With all the "The.." titles T is the winner with 25. Interestingly there are no episodes that begin with K, X, or Z.

Laura K.

Oh and "D" has 13 and "M" has 7.

Mark Plant

Maybe D cos Delta Quadrent??

Mathew Sands

Definitely one of the best episodes of the series. I remember watching this with my brother as kids...watching Harry get sucked out...we both flipped! Which leads me to a theory as to why Harry never got promoted. They made Harry someone who the audience was invested in emotionally, we all love Harry!-- but as far as ship functions go...he was only an Ensign (a brilliant one though)...him dying was ACTUALLY PLAUSIBLE though...as soon as he gets promoted he becomes indispensable...or at least less likely...as it cements his role...maybe they just never wanted to get rid of that "ya never know what could happen to Harry who's already died twice!" It's a very weak theory..but the best I got, haha

Charity Ponton

Deadlock is one of my most favorite episodes of all of the Star Trek series'

Tim Beach

Shirt idea: I wouldn't want someone to put cottage cheese on me, but weird is part of the job. JS...lol

Cass

I've missed the director insights, so it was great to dive into that side of filming again.

ST Fan CB

Hate to break it to you guys but you are wrong. The badly damaged Voyager is the ORIGINAL Voyager. Of course they are both REAL, but the one yall refer to as Voyager2 is the original. The story starts on this ship and continues on unbroken throughout the first half of the show and only jumps to the OTHER Voyager after duplication. How can the clean undamaged Voyager be the original Voyager when it did not exist until after duplication? So therefore the Ensign Kim at the end is the DUPLICATE Kim and not the original.

Tacy Muzzy

Hmmmm. I was on the page of the damaged voyager as the "original," but Scarlett makes a good point!

Rachael Etka

The Paris/Janeway relationship (to me) was that of an older sister and a little brother. Janeway served with Tom's dad, then Captain Paris now Admiral Paris, on the Al-batani. Captain Paris was something of a mentor to her at the Academy and when she was first starting out on the command path (she was previously a science officer). I would think that Tom and Janeway would have at least known of one another and more likely had met and been acquaintances. I'm sure cadet Janeway would have been a guest at the Paris house on more than one occasion and it's possible that Tom maybe had a crush on her as a boy/preteen and that is what's coming through currently.

Kristian Dalsjø

when janeway saw the damaged bridge janeway she asked kim if there was a sign of anomali on the bridge
