The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Tuvix. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Tuvix:

Following an accident which leads to Tuvok and Neelix becoming a composite being, a doctor must try to work out a way of separating the two identities. Meanwhile, for Janeway there is a frightening decision to be made.

lol why is it so funny when you guys start making portmanteaus? They all sound like ship names, too! (I want to add that Harry + B'Elanna could be called B'Elarry)

So, if the clothing is plant based, they do have RNA, so the merging is possible. Or, if what I have heard is true, if the replicators use....waste product, the uniforms could merge as well. Just a thought from a late-comer to the podcast.

Neector literally had me laughing out loud walking across campus, people looking at me like I lost it completely

My thoughts are that first, this should have been a multi episode arc. Establish him for a few episodes. Maybe on episode 3 the doctor discovers a way to separate them. This episode would show Janeway wrestling with the decision. Including talking to tuvix, observing the crew interacting with him and seeing the bonds that have already formed. Perhaps a visit to a holodeck program to bounce ideas off. The episode would end with Janeway informing Tuvix that she could not in good conscience order Tuvix to sacrifice himself. Episode closes with an upbeat Tuvix knowing he has a life to live now. Then the 4th episode comes and something happens, alien attack or something to give the drama. Ship is in grave danger and somehow it is Tuvix who realizes that separating himself would save the ship. Maybe the crew is detained or something and Tuvix can’t rescue them by himself but tuvok and Neelix could. Like it’s a two man job. But they do it without anyone on the bridge knowing. The ship is suddenly out of danger and Janeway calls on the comm,”You did it Tuvix!” Next you hear the doctor,”Captain. Please come to sickbay… there’s be a development…” Janeway walks in and sees Neelix and then tuvok. Instantly her face lights up with unrepressed joy but almost as quickly is melts into a somber expression realizing what has happened. Tuvix is gone. And he had sacrificed himself to save them all. I think this would work better. First I don’t think Janeway would do what she did as we have seen her written. In fact, in a later episode Drone, she has a similar situation in that a life was created from a transporter malfunction and even disables the doctor in that he can no longer leave sickbay again. And the fact it was a hyper advanced borg means it was potentially very dangerous and she still didn’t undo the lifeform. Secondly, I think both Neelix and tuvok would have been willing to sacrifice themselves to save two other members of the crew. So Tuvix should have had that same level of selflessness. It seems like it goes against character. Plus I really liked the storytelling possibilities of Tuvix. Again maybe just having him around for 4 episodes would have explored those ideas to satisfaction before ending the character.

Hi. I have a problem with the audio. It’s like it gets out of sync in the interview. I haven’t listened any further cause it was to annoying.

Elisabeth Westner

Lol, you guys are hilarious with your little competition over B'Elanna.

René Henriksen

Hi again. I have just tried again and the problem is still there from 52 minutes.

TheDeltaFlyers

The audio seems to be working perfectly for us and we had a few other people test it to confirm. If you haven't refreshed the page, I would suggest that. We had to reupload it earlier, so you would have to reload the episode to get the new audio we uploaded.

I'm amazed nobody has mentioned that when they separate the DNA, there is no flower! Tuvix was Tuvok, Neelix, AND the orchid. Where did the orchid go?! It could have been nice to have the orchid there at the end for Janeway to have in her ready room as a reminder of the decision she had to make.

Justin

Loved the bonus scene at the end.

TheDeltaFlyers

Great catch! You’re right, that would’ve been a nice touch to have Janeway keep the orchid. ~~ Garrett

Whelp that episode was so much more heavy than I remember it. I’ve watched Voyager through many times but that’s the great thing about the show, you guys covered so many topics they hit a different way every time you watch them. This one might be one of the darkest of trek, definitely of Voyager. Keep up the awesome work doing the rewatch with you guys each week gives it whole new experience.

It's interesting to me that you guys focused on the naming possibilities of various combinations of characters. I was thinking about personalities, like Chakotay + Tom: he'd have to be putting himself on report all the time. You mentioned Kes + B'Elanna. To me that was intriguing as well, considering Kes's submissive, sweet personality (altho of course she has gumption!) and B'Elanna's boldness and risk-taking behavior. I wonder if this combo would manifest a bit like the human B'Elanna we met in the first season episode.

Jenners

And congrats to Robbie & Rebecca! To quote a line from White Christmas (rewatched over the holidays), as Danny Kaye said to Bing Crosby: "Garrett & Meghan, come on in, the water's fine!"

Zan Hecht

To me, "toil" sounded like Ethan Phillips's attempt at doing an impression of Tuvok.

Crystal Komenda

Thought I'd mention it because I know there were some issues with the interview audio syncing - the Podcast version has syncing issues with the interview bonus material at the end when I listened to it this morning. I listened through Apple's Podcast app if that's helpful.
