Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Flashback:
To help Tuvok battle a debilitating childhood memory, Capt. Janeway enters a mind-meld with him, which transports them to the U.S.S. Excelsior with Capt. Sulu in command.

But Kate's a Lady! I can't imagine her participating in the Gaseous Anomaly wars LMAO Also 'Whoops he Pon Farred' should have become an on going joke! lmao I just laughed at that for 10 minutes lmao

Donald Jordan

I know this comment will find you all LONG after this had originally posted (Sorry I'm new)... But these "gaseous anomaly" behind the scenes stories made me laugh so hard! 🤣 I grew up in a time where my Dad's favorite game was "Come here and pull my finger.."

Lee Stroud

I’m a recent addition, so a late comment, but as a physician have to mention the cortical monitor’s attached to the mastoid bone, not the parietal, which is above the ear and behind the temple. Did enjoy the “gaseous anomaly” recollections especially Kate’s banter and Tim’s impressive recording. Boys! Just got to love ‘em.❤️

Suzanne Hollifield Eller

Yes. I noticed that with Sulu and Janeway. It did seem more like time travel. I also think Garrett as the lead in an Excelsior series is brilliant!

Dee McGee

This makes me want to read Grace Lee Whitney's book.

Doni Marie Sanchez

Garrett the Tzu sound is also common in Italian. ZZ sounds

If the guys are interested, and if Memory Alpha’s production numbers are correct (guessing some of the scripts they still have could verify, like Robbie’s Sacred Ground script), this was the production order of late S2 into S3: Filmed in S2, with four planned to be aired in S3: 2x25 Resolutions (production #141) 2x26 Basics I (prod #142) 3x07 Sacred Ground (prod #143) 3x05 False Profits (prod #144) 3x02 Flashback (prod #145) - filming started on 27 March 1996 3x01 Basics II (prod #146) - last day of filming was Friday, 19 April 1996; since it was a heavy location shoot and it didn’t matter what order they filmed the S3 episodes in before the hiatus, they filmed it last to take advantage of longer days on location before sunset Then proper S3 filming commenced with: 3x03 The Chute (prod #147) - started production on 15 July 1996 3x06 Remember (prod #148) 3x04 The Swarm (prod #149) 3x08 Future’s End I (prod #150) And continued (basically) in order, with three single-episode flips - two probably to line up RDM and Bob’s directed episodes, to direct after lighter on-camera episodes for them in terms of prep - from 3x13-3x19. (Obviously only ten minutes in, and won’t watch it all tonight because it’s late on the east coast, but his comment made me think to mention it. 😊)

I love all the poetry being inspired by TDF. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of is is VERY good! The scene with Tuvok playing with blocks cracks me up. I don’t know who thought of that but it totally looks like something a preschooler would be doing. I’ve always been fascinated by mind melds. I know it’s a device that’s been used countless times across the Star Trek franchise, but I always want more. Garrett, I’m surprised you could confuse anyone with Nurse Chapel - That was Majel Barrett! I agree that it was distracting and just plain weird that Tuvok was bopping in and out of the flashback. Damn it, Robbie! I’m trying to drink tea and you’re talking about igniting explosive gaseous anomalies!

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

Fun tidbit that DS9 did a TOS style tribute for the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: The original Series; according to Memory-Alpa this was "Voyager" contribution: ""Flashback" was Star Trek: Voyager's tribute both to the films starring the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series and to Star Trek's 30th anniversary, recreating many scenes from the feature film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country."

Jeremy Taylor

An anomaly, Voyager has spied Tuvok's past echoes inside He's got memories of Sulu They're not from watching Hulu So Janeway's along for the ride

David McMullen

Or how about Kirk's old yomen Janice Rand makes a appearance and makes a comment on how long it took her to get a promotion

Kathleen Baxter

Garrett and Robbie when Chakotay told Tuvok to not think about his problem with being dizzy and you said in the podcast that this was not good advice I disagree with this because I have seizure disorder and have been suffering from dizziness due to a side effect from an increase in one of my medications and watching your podcast has distracted me from thinking about this which has helped me with not feeling dizzy but when I am not distracted and focusing on how I feel the dizziness returns.

Sonia Singh

Loved this week’s post-credits scene!!!!

Christopher Collins

I say Garrett’s Limerick wins this week. That sounded Amazing!

Matt

Am I the only one that had a Flashback to Sesame Street when Garrett said, "not 1, not 2, but 3 memory engrams..."

Matt

Tom, I mean Robbie, I mean Tom, can you adjust your picture to cover your face better...LOL

Christopher Collins

I don’t think it would have been too difficult to make those excelsior sets because a lot of those sets were reviews from the enterprise D from The Next Generation bridge and also from Star Trek Generations which came out in 1994. A lot of it was just reusing set parts from previous built parts.

Christopher Collins

I don’t think these were the same uniforms as Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. I went to a convention with George Takei a few months after this episode aired on TV and George notes that there was a problem with the zipper flys on these uniforms vs Star Trek VI because they kept getting stuck while trying to go to the restroom and that was never an issue during the filming of Star Trek VI where more money was invested into the uniforms.

MiKE DEVLiN

Enjoying the video podcast as ever! 😃 But are The Boys not aware that this was “the 30th Anniversary of Trek “ episode of Voyager : a recreation of events/ sets/ props etc from Star Trek VI : The Undiscovered Country (1991) with several actors returning from the film. (Beyond George and Grace Lee) Just seemed odd they haven’t mentioned any of this (so far as I’ve watched hehe)

MiKE DEVLiN

Ok so yep the recreation-of-Trek VI thing did come up in the questions at the end! Tho I still don’t think Robbie or Garrett mentioned this was the 30th anniversary ep 😊. Hey and too bad you couldn’t get George to call in via subspace for this ep 😟- was he approached? Given, as Garrett said this was the only time a TOS regular was on Voyager - this opportunity won’t present itself again! Doh

Karen

I heard the Count going 'Ah, ah, ah!' in my head after he said that. So, no. You're not alone.

Jamason Isenburg

I knew "flatulate fridays existed" and I knew Tim was involved heavily in such activities but it's a new one to me that Ethan and Robbie were also leads in these roles! haha! Love IT!!!

Maggie Metz

Literally wiping the tears of laughter from my eyes... OMG - gaseous anomalies!!!! As some may say, there's nothing wrong with a bit of toilet humour amongst friends and colleagues🤣🤣

Mike Gu

Maybe one of the writers somehow had a seemingly repressed memory or nostalgic that provable facts/circumstances make impossible? Wonder what the psychiatry literature has to say about it.

Taisho Rose

They may have still had set pieces from the Enterprise B from Generations, which was a slightly upgraded Excelsior class ship. But it was still quite a feat of engineering to reproduce a feature film quality set down to the very last detail in such a short period of time on a TV budget.

Taisho Rose

Why are boys so gross?!? I mean, the gaseous anomaly stories are hilarious now, but I feel so sorry for Kate Mulgrew. I think I remember reading some quote where she said that after midnight, all grown men turn into 10 year old boys, and drop trou, hurl spitballs, indulge in scatological humor, and just generally act insufferable. Lol I guess I'm definitely influenced by my own nostalgia, but I like this episode because I believe Star Trek VI is one of the better Star Trek films, and it was a great movie for the original series cast to go out on ! It was the first Star Trek film I was old enough to see in theaters when it came out, so I have very fond memories of it. I picked up on the connection between the camera angles and Hitchcock, too! When I was a kid I used to watch Alfred Hitchcock Presents religiously. I recognized a lot of camera movements inspired by Vertigo, which makes sense since Tuvok is literally suffering from vertigo and his memories are in question. This podcast has really helped me differentiate between the styles of all the various directors on ST, so now I realize that David Livingston has directed many of my favorite ST episodes. He has such a unique style! Kinda reminds me of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, or Terry Gilliam. That shot of Sulu leaning out of the smoke on the bridge was totally badass. All gaseous anomaly jokes aside, that was a great reveal! The Excelsior class is my favorite starship design, and I have some trivia regarding the Excelsior in this episode. The studio had converted the model of the Excelsior that they used in Star Trek VI into the Enterprise B for the movie Star Trek: Generations. They permanently altered it in a way where it wasn't possible to use it as the Excelsior any more. The FX team on Voyager actually had to build an entirely new model that was half the size of the original. (The original was 7 feet long!) They used some footage from the film (The shockwave hitting the ship) but the smaller model was used for all the other shots. Oh, man, that end skit... I love how Harry is not ruling out Janeway entirely. I think he may have a slight infatuation with the Captain. ;) But I'm not sure Tom is just trying to "create rumors" if he's heading for the captain's personal quarters. That scruffy flyboy really gets around, doesn't he? I have to admit that it brought back memories of the early days of reading fanfiction on the interwebz, back when the internet was very young, and so was I! This was in the days of modems, AOL and Mapquest! (Nostalgia is the recurring theme here, even in my comment! lol) If I recall correctly, the fans who shipped Janeway and Paris nicknamed it "Tom/Kat," which I always thought was cute.

B obrien

Just heard about Harry’s quarters. Sigh

B obrien

Guess those of us in the lower tiers paying since June don’t rate any kind of perks

Utopia Science Fiction

What a spot on impersonation of George Takei. I've always enjoyed Flashback, although probably more for the nostalgia than the actual story, which seems a bit exposition heavy at points. Thanks for another great podcast!

Joseph Michael Kuhlmann

Garrett & Robbie, you guys crack me up! I LOLed several times—for real. Great medicine for these trying times. Thank you. I’ll think of you both the next time my censors detect a gaseous anomaly.

Stephanie G Williams

Oh my goodness that was too funny! Gaseous anomalies and all. And Tom, ya better stay away from the Captain's quarters, or Chakotay is gonna shove you out of the nearest airlock! 🤣😜😁

Lisa Minnesma

Garrett! Your voice impersonation of Sulu is great!

Mathew Sands

This is most definitely a "listen to your elders" episode. From Tuvok learning to listen to his parents about Starfleet to him learning from Sulu when he "was absolutely right but also absolutely wrong". The idea that with age comes wisdom was apparent throughout the episode.

Mathew Sands

To answer the admiral---Vegans don't eat eggs. Most Vegetarians eat eggs unless they choose not to. Tuvok was fine.

Andrew Murray

Janice Rand (character) was in this on the Excelsior. Chakotay's advice about "put it out of your mind" was weird since that's what Tuvok was trying to do, and his meditation and so on wasn't working. Love Garrett's George/Sulu impersonation - if CBS/Paramount ever make an "Excelsior" series I hope they call you up for the title role! Love this episode for its tribute to the TOS era (and ST VI Undiscovered country specifically) as DS9's "Trials and Tribblelations" was. The weird thing is Sulu's reaction to Janeway "Who the hell are you?" when this is supposed to be Tuvok's memory, the mind meld is just allowing Janeway to "replay history" so to speak but when she becomes PART of that memory is a bit way out even for Trek. It plays out more like they have time-travelled to that era, and are "participating" in the events of that scenario.

Pınar Schwarz

Vegetarians do allow themselves to eat eggs and dairies. Vegans don't. There were only very few vegans in the 90's. When I mentioned vegans by then, nobody knew what it was. Today nobody knows what a vegetarian is :-D

LT Turner Jr

Oh my goodness, Garret impersonation of Sulu is SPOT on. Loved it :)

Mr Paris

Can you take your pants off? Ha ha. Dick Van Dyke did just that on one episode. He asked Buddy for his pants when Robs son was going to be born.

ST Fan CB

There was another TOS actor in this episode and that was the fantastic Michael Ansara as Commander Kang. Nostalgia alone gives this a 10/10 and multiple thumbs up!!!!! Come on man. Garrett, how hard would it have been to waltz on over to the stage when George Takei was filming and watch him in action?
