So happy Robbie and Rebecca found love 😍

Mark Scheuern

A lot of modulation going on. Not one but two last minute technobabble solutions in this episode. I like the show but this sort of ending which was essentially "magic happens and now everything is okay" became far too common. Loved Picardo's acting, though.

First of all, CONGRATS to Robbie and Rebecca! You guys seem really great together, from what I’ve seen, and I hope for the best for you! I love that the day before you eloped, you filmed the episode with the first flirtation between Tom and B’Elanna. Hey Garrett, why does your face keep flashing blue? There’s a weird light that keeps hitting you. The “Helmsman’s Log” thing confused me a little. Are we supposed to believe that every core crew member records a daily log of the events of the day and their take on it? I get that the logs are simply a tool for exposition, but I guess that’s just a little too obviously the case when it’s someone other than the captain. I said this once before, but I really hope that at the end of all this we’ll be able to purchase a bound copy of all of the poetry from the podcast episodes. I’ve heard that phrase “Like a snake through a tube” before, and I always chuckle at that. I don’t know who came up with that, but it makes no sense. Snakes don’t have feet. They move by slithering. They would not be able to move at all in a tube. It would be like a strait jacket for them. Robbie’s do-over makes me wonder: If you’re filming the bridge scene before the battle scene (reverse order), wouldn’t it be hard to know exactly how to know how much injury to play recovery from? Would that be the director’s responsibility to say, “Oh, we’re gunna have you beat up a bit before this scene”? In my question about Zimmerman’s resentment, I was referring to how he was dismissive of him, talking about him in the third person and never directly to him, etc. But I guess I can see that he never thought of him as being sentient.

As we say in Cantonese, M-goi for this week's episode!

Cheerful Nihilist

First time using the abbreviations EMH, when in the time travel episode Relativity, Janeway says, “Computer Activate EMH”. Is this what they call a continuity problem? Never understood that reference. :-)

Matt

Συγχαρητήρια Ρόμπι! :)

Another way persistence works as a them for this episode is with Tom. Lol if he had not been persistent with B'Elanna they would not have ended up with their family. :)

Matt

I always loved those scenes when Kes basically took over and didn't take No for an answer. She had such a sweet, soft, caring side and then she had this driven side that would not let up even when everyone disagreed or didn't get where she was coming from.

Matt

What a great observation by Robbie, the differences in how Bob played the EMH vs Dr. Zimmerman. I never caught the difference as much until you pointed it out. Amazing portrayal by our beloved Doctor.

Matt

That's one of the best things about Voyager; those moments at the end when the Doctor started humming opera again. Tugs at your heart and just another reason this series is so relatable to aspects of every day life.

Matt

The Doctor is such a joy to listen too. The work he's done throughout his career and the stories he has are just wonderful! His YouTube channel is a must follow.

Kira

Zoo/Aquarium keeper tidbit for listeners: “Snake through the tube” isn’t as bizarre as it sounds! Tubing is actually a common restraint practice in snake husbandry. They can’t back out of the tube, making handling easier and reduces stress for both animal and keeper.

Kira

Chris Knapp

Great job, as usual. Thanks for you insights Bob. You're amazing. And I'm very happy to hear that your butt cheek has healed up. Also: Congratulations Robbie and Rebecca!!! Luv you guys!!! LLAP!!!

John Marlowe

I remember reading that William Shatner wore a girdle when he was overweight, but didn't know that you guys did too, along with Robert Beltran. If you can, point out in a future episode when you know you're wearing a girdle?

Anna Post

So, although snake through a tube is often a double entendre, the phrase itself was never that weird to me because I believe it’s a plumbing reference rather than a animal one. I think it comes from snaking a drain. Once the clog is clear the snake slides right though the pipe without meeting resistance. Line makes more sense in that context.

Janet Potts

Regarding Zimmerman's antipathy for the Doctor, one thing that is revealed later in the series is that this particular EMH was considered to be a bit of a failure and Zimmerman had huge regrets over creating it. Perhaps the holo recreation of Zimmerman was also reflecting the feelings that the real Zimmerman had over the holo Doctor.

sab ewell

I really thought Robbie was gonna pick Freddie Bristow as the loser since he doesn't get the girl or any screentime 😂 This was a fun one!

David Turner

I think Dr Zimmerman was especially derogatory towards the EMH because we find out in a much later episode that the EMH mark one wasn’t well received and was removed from service in starfleet. By the way speaking as a Brit a roly poly is referred to as a dessert pudding with the full name a jam roly poly 😂

Kira

I’m taking all my animal knowledge and leaving 😂😂

Melissa Butler

Not to plug another show, but if you have an account on Discovery+, see episode S1, E4 ("Robert, King of Cobras") of the show "Crikey, It's the Irwins." You'll see the snake handler put a king cobra into a tube to check on the health of the snake. ;)

Janet Potts

According to the CC, the alien comes from Mislen.

Karen Chuplis

Bob Picardo gets a 10/10 roomrater score for that set up!

Stephanie G Williams

I'm still giggling about the guy girdles! 🤣 I had no idea anyone but Shatner ever wore them in Star Trek. Now I have this pic in my head of Beltran, Garrett and Robbie in Medieval corsets... 😜😂😁

Hannah Swartzel-Rausch

I was thinking that, but when the emh diagnostic was installed with the emh, would he have known that? Or is this just Zimmerman regular "charming" personality?

Jeremy Taylor

The Doctor's mind starts to slip Just then, a swarm threatens the ship But Harry ain't no newb' It's like a snake through the tube And with a reboot, the Doc gets a grip

Eric Bennett

I love Garrett's impersonation of Robert Picardo calling everyday to pitch singing opera! lol. That was awesome!

Humaira

Congratulations Robbie and Rebecca! I'm with everyone else smirking about girdles - but come on people...a year of lockdown...I suspect many of us could do with one! The more I watch Voyager the more I appreciate what a great actress Jennifer Lien was and I'm just sorry it didn't work out. Kes is definitely the most mature and plays a balance between youth and wisdom so well. Bob Picardo brilliant as holographic Zimmerman and really impressive how he acts two totally different characters.

Eric Bennett

They guys talk a lot about Kim/Torres having a lot of scenes together, but the reason that was the case was they are both engineers. Harry helped her on a lot of things in engineering and remember when Harry went back to San Francisco with Libby... he was working on a ship design. Engineering was a clearly a specialty of his, but the two of them having scenes together always made sense.

Christopher Collins

Late Congratulations Robbie and Rebecca wedding number one in Canada.

Christopher Collins

Is this the first time we see the EMH sing opera on the Holodeck? I don't recall that in season 1-2 of Voyager.

Christopher Collins

Nice Congratulations message in Greek. At first I was thinking you were saying it in Russian but the letters did not look right for Russian.

Taisho Rose

The little swarm ships reminded me of bedbugs... I thought this was a conscious decision on the design team's part because of the ick factor. I swear I recall seeing convention footage of Kate Mulgrew saying the Chardis makeup job made her laugh uncontrollably because he looked like a sad clown, and they had to do multiple takes. Thank you for mentioning the Alfonso videos because I never would've known about them otherwise!!! Is nobody going to mention the fact that Star Trek Beyond (the 3rd Reboot film) reused the idea of a formidable swarm of little ships? I've always felt like the Reboots borrowed/stole a lot from Voyager; Kelvin Timeline Kirk's backstory has much in common with Tom Paris, the Kelvin Enterprise can land, the whole concept of the reboots is based in an alternate timeline- not that Voyager was the only Star Trek show to use that concept, but Voyager had more episodes about alternate timelines than all the other shows combined. Glad to hear the statass report on Robert Picardo's injury. Also, congratulations, Robbie and Rebecca!!! Here's hoping that Covid dies down to the point where you can properly celebrate with family and friends in the future. In regards to howTom's prank will go down- Probably NOT like a snake through the tube lol

Irene Artho

I always thought Beyond movie was taking the Swarm idea from this episode. I like the idea of swarming enemies and loved the way they attacked in Beyond (though it was very sad to watch the Enterprise getting destroyed!)

Lisa Minnesma

Bob Picardooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always love when he guest stars! :D The Doctor was one of my favourite characters!

Lisa Minnesma

Also, I definitely noticed the difference between the Doctor and Zimmerman!! With his messy hair, slouched posture and grumpy personality! Excellent acting to show the difference between the two men who were physically identical

Stephanie Baker

I really enjoy rewatching along with the podcast and finding more details to relish. When I watched The Swarm prior to the podcast, I noticed Kes saving everyone and being very modest about it. And Tom returning to the bridge after near-death without a scratch or a hair out of place.

Cass

I always attributed Paris’ and Janeway’s teasing to her time on his father’s crew. I guess in my head she was a younger officer and he was a kid/teen who got dragged along to work events who was super excited about flying and adventure or that his father actually fondly mentioned (outside of his presence). As for Harry and B’Elanna, Harry was engaged when they met. I always saw friendly ribbing between them instead of flirting. I think the fiancee would have been a big deal for them, especially if B’Elanna’s history remained the same. Anyway, I like how both Tom and B’Elanna grow throughout their relationship. They had a lot of similarities as well as a lot of differences, which were interesting to explore. I guess I could see Harry maybe being a calming/steadying influence on B’Elanna (minus financee drama), but I don’t really see a similar (or obvious) growth path for him. The rank difference and both being within the yellow branch also felt like more of a fraternization issue to me.

Regarding the trick of having The Doctor hum/sing the same song that he had sung before the reboot and leaving the ending of the story open is repeated in the last TNG movie ST: Nemesis with Data. Data had transferred/merged his programming with his "brother" B4 in an apparent failed effort to help B4 grow out of his "primitive" state. Data was then destroyed/died in the subsequent battle. The last scene of the movie showed B4 playing with Data's cat while humming the same song that Data has sung earlier in the movie at Riker and Troi's wedding. The movie closes leaving viewers to imagine if B4 ever developed and grew to be like Data clearing having some or all of Data's memories.
