The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Warlord. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Warlord:
A dying alien transfers himself into Kes' mind in order to execute a political coup on his own planet.

Thank you for finding that!! It wasn’t as bad ‘on the rack’ as it probably was in person. But yes, I could see why it got the boot.

SnazzyO

I loved Jennifer Lein in this. I don’t think she was too over the top. (Of course I’m doing this binge rewatch in 2023 and just saw a Trump interview on TV — now there’s an example of over the top). There were some significant Kes changes in this episode. She stayed broken up with Neelix. I remember being surprised by that at the time. I think it was a good move for her but I wish we had a scene that addressed it more.

Kirby Burgess

I’m cackling at “does he even lift? Like does he really lift?” “yeah, I think so, yeah. like actually lifts weights” “he probably does…” 😂

Dee McGee

Good premise, not a great episode. Writers did a real disservice to the Kes character with some pretty subpar episodes.

Scott Weild

If anyone wants to join me I've just started as a Patron and this is this is my 'first paid' episode.

Dustin Snyder

It wouldn't be a sunday evening without the Delta Flyers :)

Rich Gross

I guess Neelix's shoes are like a Tardis, bigger on the inside, because he doesn't walk around wearing the ridiculous clown shoes that would be necessary to fit those feet!

Rich Gross

Robbie does a great job of describing something I could not accurately define. Those scenes (in multiple episodes) with the break resort always look so uncomfortable to me, and Robbie's right! It's a claustrophobic feeling! Not only is it a very confined area shown on screen, but the camera doesn't even move very much.

Rich Gross

I disagree somewhat with Garrett about Jennifer changing her voice. If a male warlord being takes over Kes's body, yeah, of course it's still her voice, but that consciousness is going to express themselves through that voice in a way that feels authentically them. So, within the limits of her vocal cords, that warlord is using his voice.

Aithne Loeblich

So funny... I guess it's just me, but I never had a problem with the general having a big performance. I never thought his was bigger than Tiernas... although on this last watch through I did notice that it was odd, whenever you'd cut to Voyager, they always seemed to be in the Briefing Room. They never left! What the heck? Lol.

Aithne Loeblich

This never bothered me. I just accepted it, because I figured that they couldn't film 'the beach' cause it would mean they would be on location and not on set. I guess I just accepted it because it had a sitcom feel. You stare in at the actors and not out at their POV scenery.

MisterRob

Two things— one, totally agree w/Robbie on people being far too smiley on the bridge in the beginning while folks are in a burning ship that’s about to explode... ?!? B’Elanna was all “uhh it may explode” and Janeway, with a wink and a smile: “Tom.. be a doll and nudge us in a bit closer so Harry can beam the crew aboard before they fry to death from the radiation” (ok, maybe that wasn’t quite the exact line... but it sure looked that way!) So, so weird 🙃 One other item, silly and random— Harry’s picture needs a horizontal flip so he’s looking at Tom when they speak after the credits... although it looks pretty hilarious with him looking in totally the opposite direction 🤣 Regardless, I’m loving this new addition at the end— it’s always a bit sad when the episode ends, but now we have this extra little tidbit to look forward to!

Lilith

agreed. and especially with a large part of the story being him refusing to loose to a “little girl,” i believe he certainly would have spoken like that not only naturally, but intentionally (or even forcefully) to sort of assert his control, and use his own body language and tone as a way to say “i AM stronger than her.”

Mike Gu

I think the first GoT book was published a few months before Warlord aired. But a major character’s name is Tyrion...coincidence?! I also have a cat named Tyrion!

Andrew Murray

I seem to recall Tom had an affinity with bright patterned Hawaiian shirts.....

Andrew Murray

Makes me wonder what would have happened if Teran had possessed Torres.....then you'd have an already volatile, sometimes hot tempered character and ramp that up 1000%.

Chris Knapp

I loved "Third Rock From The Sun". I especially loved the episode when they traveled to a sci-fi convention in Cleveland to protest the way extra-terrestrials were being portrayed in TV and movies. They also had a very special guest star. It was hysterical. Thanks for mentioning it during the podcast as well as the last Admirals' Meeting , Garrett.

Rhonda Dirr

I do agree, the wide angle lens is not a good choice. I always wondered why certain scenes seemed just a bit off, visually.

Miki Tracey

I caught up...now what do I do? Well I guess I could disagree again. I actually enjoyed this episode (although the actor playing Demmos looked a bit cross eyed keeping watch on those extra nostrils). I liked the B Movie overacting, it went with the B Movie premise... I liked her tearing up the screen and her B movie bad guys tearing it up with her. It had to be hard to be always the little cute pixie who doesn't really have the experience to not be sweet as can be. so.. basically.. there might have been some overacting but I enjoyed it.

Caryn Mellom

I just rewatched the episode and Tuvok reports that Ensign Martin and the representative are dead to the Bridge. So Tuvok named him :)

Ms Nike Morgan

Definitely reminded me of Game of Thrones, too!! The name, Tyrion / Tyron - and the look of the palace / castle immediately reminded me of G of T!

Ericka Birkenstein

"...Game of Thrones fans are happy." Are we though 😫😫😫

Sony

I still haven't seen season 8. I'm too apprehensive about how it ends.

Sony

I liked 3rd Rock From The Sun in highschool and nostagia-binged it on Netflix 4 years ago. I started watching Schitt's Creek which also has that "fish out of water" story you were talking about. I didn't care for it at first but then it really started to take off around season 2 and just got better with each season. Eugene and Dan Levy must be word buffs because SC is the only show (or any kind of media) I've noticed where all those strange words in crossword puzzles/ SATs are used. lol The writing, comedy and vocabulary are gold.

Sony

Janeway should’ve sent the doctor, with his mobile emitter, to infiltrate the imperial hall rather than Tuvok because Tieran wouldn’t have been able to use Kes’ mental powers to detect him.

Sony

“We find out that it’s a cortical implant that was automatically activated at the moment of death. It basically enhanced Tieran’s neuro-pattern and sent it out along the peripheral nerves. The actual transfer took place through bio-electric microfibers in the hand of the recently deceased Tieran. This pattern is transmitted through Kes’s nervous system and then into her brain.” ~ Garrett I think Elon Musk is working on that. lol

Eric Bennett

I guess the only concern with this would have been that they just got the mobile emitter and wouldn't want to risk it.

Christopher Collins

What is interesting about the line by Tom Paris remarking to Tuvok that he has to show him how to do the Vulcan nerve pinch. That statement is said by Kirk to Spock in The Original Series and Spock responded that he had tried many times before. Now Data was able to do the Vulcan nerve pinch in Star Trek The Next Generation in Unification Part One and Star Trek Nemesis.

Maggie Metz

Now I understand why this episode did not resonate with me when it first aired or on subsequent viewings. Thank you Robbie and Garrett for your insightful analysis !

Tashicat

idk, I cant take the evil Kes voice seriously, I close my eyes and just see Vitani lmao

Stefanie Schütt

When Robbie mentioned the stuntman breaking his collarbone falling I was like, jup, been there done that 😂 we had a gymnastics comedy group and i had to do a fake fall and broke my collarbone 😆

Sony

Jackie Chan is a maniac when it comes to stunts. He broke his foot filming Rumble in the Bronx and they painted his foot cast to look like a shoe. In Armour of God he fell from a broken branch, hit a rock and had a hole in his head ever since.

Joseph Zodda

Game of thrones in space I like that 😊

Leslie Banta

Maybe I was listening while very tired, but at first as they were referencing the last two podcasts, all I could hear the guys saying was “Future Zen” and “Future Zen - part 2.” Took me several minutes to realize I hadn’t listened to a podcast out of order and missed episode reviews, but that I was just hearing the title, “Future’s END” all wrong. 🤦‍♀️

Taisho Rose

I doubt it's a coincidence. Tieran, Tyrion. Those books were immensely popular when they came out. Though, if I think about the TV show, Jofferey reminds me of Kes the most, visually. Lol

Lisa Minnesma

Speaking of B'Elanna, (bc I just finished watching the skit at the end), could you guys ask Roxann about possibly being a guest when you review Blood Fever? It's a bit away still but letting her know so if she can make it to put it in her calendar. I'm so curious to hear her perspective, and it's a huge Paris/Torres episode! :)

Taisho Rose

Jennifer Lien was able to finally expand her acting chops in this episode. I don't care if it was dramatic because the subject matter called for it. Same goes for the unusual lenses and shots. It made the situation seem even more like it was spiraling out of control. My only complaint is that the 'ol switcheroo in the end was played out too fast- almost feels like it should have been drawn out a little longer, but they ran out of time lol. So many plays are about royals usurping each other, I think the subject matter will forever be associated with theatrical style drama in our collective consciousness, which must influence the production choice to go with grander and broader performances to some degree.

Albert Smith

27:30 That’s when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie_

Steven Mazzacua

I would like to thank this episode for BURNING into my mind FOREVER what Talaxian toes look like.

Susan L. Prince

I would disagree that power corrupts. Power reveals.

Megan Moore

I thought Jennifer Lien did a good job in this one. I always enjoy her but she isn’t always up to the same level as the other cast members in my opinion. But I thought this episode she did really great.

Kiara H.

I realized as Robbie described the tank top/camisole shirt they wanted him to wear at the resort, that I had seen a photo of it months ago on a website with all the prop/costume lots from the giant It's A Wrap auction! The shirt and shorts looked so out of place with the other civilian clothes for Tom Paris, that I originally wondered if it had been mislabeled. http://startrekpropcollector.com/trekauctions/item.pl?i=5121
