The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Future’s End, Part 2. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. They are joined for a special guest interview with Brannon Braga, Star Trek: Voyager writer and executive producer.

Future’s End, Part 2:
Tuvok and Paris, lost in present-day Los Angeles, enlist the aid of a young astronomer and use cellular technology to communicate with the earth-orbiting Voyager.

Great finish on the two parter. Understanding the original intent for a longer arc explains the anti-Govt guys. They were a bit out there. But I liked the doctor coming in and doing the rescue. Many excellent one-liners. ‘Breakfast, is up’ gives me a chuckle.

iSuzane

Love this episode duo. One of my favourites from Voyager.

Suzanne Hollifield Eller

I’m fairly new to the group, and like many, this two-parter is one of my favorites. I liked the guest appearance by Brannon Braga. I have said (sp?). I thought it was common. Maybe I picked it up on Voyager and started saying from there. lol.

Joy Nishida

I’m so late to this wonderful podcast, but I wanted to say that Garrett could have had the bridge as your background! You were acting Captain!

Mark Scheuern

I want to live in the alternate universe in which Sarah Silverman was a regular on Voyager. My favorite episodes, too. Would have loved this as a four-parter.

J

Going through these again now I have access to the premium content and they're well worth rewatching. I'm really glad Year of Hell wasn't a full season. I think quite a few people, like myself, don't care for that kind of story. Don't like Course Oblivion either.

Rich Gross

“We’re on a journey”…Why can’t we be on a voyage? ;)

Rich Gross

Wow! Guest interview with Brannon Braga?! You guys are really stepping up your game. On a related note, the editing of this (podcast) episode was great. It’s fun seeing TDF getting so much better and more polished all the time!

Rich Gross

Robbie, with the black t-shirt you’re wearing under the gold sweater, at a quick glance that totally looks like a Star Fleet uniform.

Tashicat

It's dumb but every time I see this episode, I'm left feeling that y'all owe Rain a few tanks of gas! Especially since ya just leave her in a freaking desert! lolbvs ijs

Craig Drebit

Brannon Braga! The dude gets bashed online a lot, especially for writing Threshold; but he has been a part of so many great and favourite shows, especially Cosmos, Flash Forward and Terra Nova. Thanks!!!

James G. Jones

Brannon Braga pitched making "year of hell" a whole season story? That would been cool. Now I wonder if he pitched the idea for season 3 of star trek Enterprise to be a whole story arc of finding and stopping the Xindi and was given the Green light for that.

Andrew Murray

Great guest spots - hope you can get Jeri Ryan when you get to the seasons she's introduced in.

Andrew Murray

Last Haiku line "Back to the future" would kind of work too (5 syllables).

Andrew Murray

and what is the propulsion drive of the timeship: Hyper-Spacial-Transwarp-Slipsteam....something....? ha ha.

Andrew Murray

What you needed is then Raine to grab on to Paris as he's beaming up to the shuttle (similar to Jillian in ST IV Voyage Home....)

Andrew Murray

Lucky the Doc didn't suggest the Emergency Command Hologram protocols on the spot.

Andrew Murray

Maybe Braxton should have stayed in that alternate timeline because later he tries to blow up Voyager before its even left the Alpha quadrant. Mind you some of Janeway's questionable decisions led to his opinion of her so you can sympathise with him...to a point.

Andrew Murray

you could have given Raine some sort of ....temporal sub-space transceiver...? (is there such a thing?).

Matt

Whoa, was not expecting to see Brandon Braga! Love these kinds of chats, seeing how things were pitched originally and how they finally ended up.

Matt

I don't know why I always find it odd that actors, writers, etc. say that they don't rewatch their shows. Brandon mentioned not seeing it since the 90's. Robbie is watching these with us, most of which having not seen since they were aired. If it were me I'd think the nostalgia would kick in more often and I'd have to watch periodically.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

Future's End for me was the start of a turning point for the series. It seems to me that the actors/writers etc. finally got into the groove of who the characters are; at least it seemed that way to me. Great recap; thanks everyone.

Abra Lindstrom

Thanks Garrett, Robbie, Brannon- Futures End was always a favorite of mine, and this review was just as much fun to watch as the original episode!

Craig Main

‘Mr. leisure suit” - “There’s a name I hadn’t considered” - Slays me every time

Sony

Awesome podcast, love Future's End. Thanks for all the great stories, Mr. Braga.

Sony

Brannon Braga is also an alliteration, just like Rain Robinson and Sarah Silverman. lol

Janet Potts

Braga is wrong about the onset of serialized TV shows (other than soap operas). Babylon 5 was conceived as a 5 year story. The first season had many stand alone, or seemingly stand alone, episodes, though often there would be easter eggs in those episodes that wouldn't become significant for another season or longer. It was the most economical SF TV show that had been done at the time, largely due to the fact that they had the stories planned out and scripts written so far in advance that they had time to properly prepare. The show's creator, Joe Straczynski, wrote 92 of the 110 episodes, including over half of the first and second seasons, all 44 episodes in the third and fourth seasons, and all but 1 episode in the final season. They also pioneered the use of CGI for special effects in a way that had never been done before for episodic TV. It wasn't until the success of that show, which ran from January 1994-November 1998, that the idea of doing yearlong or series-long stories really took off.

Karen

Getting close to an improbability drive there. ;)

Karen Chuplis

Robbie, I was wondering if re-watching and evaluating in ways you probably don't do with shows you direct is in anyway helpful or illuminating for you going forward as a director? I mean, does it make you maybe more aware in ways you weren't before?

Eric Bennett

It was great having Brannon Braga as a guest. Love the guest interviews so please keep them coming. Looking forward to when they can eventually got Roxann Dawson on.

Eric Bennett

Garrett, Garrett, Garrett. It isn't Bugs Bunny getting away from Wile E. Coyote... it is the Road Runner! haha...

Jeremy Miller

I found the Delta Flyers a number of months ago and want Robert and Garrett to know how much it's meant to our adult son with severe disabilities. He lives and breathes Star Trek and this makes it so personal to him. He wanted to send a picture of him watching the latest video but I can't see how to do that.

Joseph Zodda

Thanks for this. Since this pandemic has hit your show is one of my highlights of each week. I appreciate this nostalgic trip to the days of my early 20s.

TheDeltaFlyers

Hi Jeremy, you can email the picture to thedeltaflyers@gmail.com and we will make sure that Garrett and Robbie see it.

Denise Yee

When I upped my tier to receive this podcast with video, I was super skeptical if it was really worth having to stare at two dudes talking for an hour plus, when, for less money I could pop in air buds and hear the same content while doing other things. Well -- I was wrong! It has been totally worth it to watch the boys rewatching the episodes. And to see Robbie getting things wrong that he's absolutely sure about LOL (I can completely relate -- I do this too!) Or getting to see Brannon Braga looking like how I feel every time I have to use technology ;-) It didn't seem like I was missing much with the audio version, but now that I see the video, the few extra bucks is worth it Hmm...I wonder if I should repost this on the audio thread in case anyone there is trying to decide to increase their tier....if y'all get an influx of requests next month, I'll just say "you're welcome" now LOL (kidding) Anyways, another well done and enjoyable episode!

Sony

I think if the Delta Flyers posted maybe 2 more full videos on youtube (instead of just the Caretaker) it will get fans hooked and draw them in.

Jeremy Taylor

I agree. Youtube is the first place I watched TDF. They should put up one or two of the more recent episodes, as Garrett and Robbie settled in very well and the podcast improved a lot over the course of the first 10 episodes or so. [The Caretaker uploads don't have that many views (by YouTube standards) but putting "Star trek Voyager podcast" in the title could help visibility.]

Kelly Bee (CaptainKathryn)

Oh gosh I did not stop laughing throughout the entire recap 😂❤ You guys are so funny. This has always been one of my favorite episodes!

Andrew Orlowicz

Hey Delta Flyers! Finally decided to pull the trigger and joined the patreon group. I've been listening to the podcasts for free since they did the pilot episode and am glad I upgraded through the patreon page. Like everyone else I'm a long time fan of VOY. My dad introduced me to star trek when I was 10 or 11 and the two I started out with were reruns of DS9 and VOY before ENT came on the air. Loved both for different reasons, but with VOY one thing that had a major impact on me was the bromance between Tom and Harry. Now 30 yo me is ecstatic that this podcast exists and I've loved tuning in every week to the recaps. Just felt like briefly sharing that, whether Robbie and Garrett see or not. I'll make an effort to be more active in the comments but that's all I had to say :)

Taisho Rose

Kim gets to command, Tuvok gets the tacos, The Doctor gets mobile, Chakotay and Torres get kidnapped, Kes and Neelix get hooked, Paris gets the girl, and Janeway gets The Voyager! Bravo!

Cass

Wow, I am so glad they didn't have Rain join the crew. I typically don't like contemporary inserts into future (or very foreign) sets and then showing people up to prove their smarts or some such. I also don't think the show needed a new wide-eyed POV character (Kes/Neelix to Starfleet and humans, Harry as the new Ensign and everyman). I'm probably in the minority in that I tend not to like Sarah Silverman's humor/stand up and think it would have been distracting and clashing with the tone of the show back on Voyager. The character's kind of 'new' injection would probably have been short lived, since ultimately it would just be another human character either 'discovering' Star Trek tech that is already established on the show and for fans or accepting the tech quickly and then needing a new role. As for Tom, I think it was good for him to hear someone openly appreciate his positive qualities and to connect (mutually) with a woman outside of his previous 'Ladies Man' flirting. I do wonder if Rain were going to join the cast if she and Paris would have still had the same rom-com moments because (1) the show had already hinted at Tom/B'Elanna, (2) Rain and B'Elanna share some characteristics that Tom likes (as Harry points out in the podcast, lol), and (3) there seemed to be a setting the stage element both in Tom's behavior as well as the physical positioning of characters at the end of the episode. I will say that I noticed Tom and B'Elanna standing together and smiling at each other in the background of Kes' birthday party at Sandrine's, which was earlier than I recall their friendship growing. Maybe someone just made a funny, but with foreknowledge it's a nice background moment.

ST Fan CB

Why was RDM squinting? Did he not use the trick he talked about several episodes ago on how to deal with bright lights/sun on set? Big plot hole. Why did the Temporal Prime Directive not include resetting the timeline so that earth did not have access to the time ship and all its technology which it should not have had?

ST Fan CB

I do not like Tig Notaro's stand up but enjoy her on ST: Discovery. So one does not preclude the other.

Sarah Mears

I am new to the Delta Flyers. Just joined in Jan '22, but am doing my best to catch up fast. Have not taken the time to comment till now, but couldn't finish Future's End without sharing the importance of these eps to me in my life. I was a huge Voyager fan from day one, loved this two-parter very much, then in 2000 I moved to LA. My first job was at an office a block from the Santa Monica pier, and my second job was at the Music Center downtown LA. Needless to say I thought about Future's End a lot during those years, knowing that I was walking around where you all filmed these episodes. Very cool! My only regret is I never made it to the Griffith Observatory. It was on my list of things to go see all the time I lived in LA, but somehow I never made it. There is a lot I miss about LA, but a lot I don't miss as well. Spent a huge chunk of my adult life there, so it lives within me. Thank you Garrett & Robbie for doing this podcast. I am thoroughly enjoying it!
