Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week, Robert Picardo joins in for a short interview about his directorial debut.

Robbie is right! Bob Picardo directed “Alter ego” as well as “One small Step” !

Rich Gross

I don’t know why Tuvok’s tutoring in Vulcan meditation would have been necessary. If she’s a holodeck character, just edit the character to give her characteristics that are a turn-off for Harry. Yeah, I know, the alien woman behind the character would still be there pulling strings, but Harry’s issue would be solved either way!

Rich Gross

If Marayna only appeared when they encountered the nebula…….never mind all the love stuff, why was nobody freaking out that a new character popped up on the holodeck without being programmed? I thought this was a case of the alien lady taking over the Marayna character. That makes a lot more sense. But if that’s the case, what exactly is Janeway referring to as having just appeared when they got there?

K

You joke, but the side switch really did throw me for a bit, 😂 I guess these days I cling to predictability!!

Mary Burch

NGL, the fact that you guys are on different sides has completely broken my feeble brain. :D

Andrew Murray

Regarding the switched places - not the result of a Freaky Friday transporter accident then?

Andrew Murray

But also in the end didn't Marayna go back to her people, and someone else replace her on the station in the Nebula?

Andrew Murray

With the bowl-of-fruit fight, get Tom's "alter ego" (or stunt double...) Nic Locarno to do the scene instead.

Chad Heroman

I think some of the holodeck stories have computer generated characters too. Not 100% is programed in by humans. The main idea of the program is programmed in and the computer fills in the blanks. They probably think she's a fill in

Cameron R

The are you friends meme haha nice

Sony

At first I thought you switched sides because of the episode title “Alter Ego”. Nice timing!

Sony

We should petition Netflix to use Garrett and Robbie’s poems for the Netflix synopsis, alternating each episode between haiku and limerick. Or even better, publish a book of all 344 poems when the podcast is over.

Sony

Harry was rockin Spock's blue eyeshadow. 🖖

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

I have seen this episodes multiple times; Thank you for pointing out some things I never noticed or never paid attention to before. I love the background stories.

Sony

Mr. Picardo did great on his first directing job (as did Robbie Duncan McNeill), I thought the fight scene Picardo was criticizing was exactly how it would go down if someone hacked the holodeck characters to low-key kill you. The smiling while strangling and kicking was creepy as well as humorous.

Sony

Bowl of fruit? More like a bowl of punch. 🍇 🍓💥👊💥 🍌 🍉

Ms Nike Morgan

When do we get to see this Russian nesting doll, Robbie?

Stephanie G Williams

Meme request granted, y'all! I have posted my contribution meme to Twitter and the Delta Flyers Facebook page! Enjoy! 😋😂😁 Oh, and Robbie, you forget that you do a very good impersonation of Billy Bob Thornton's character from Slingblade! Mmmm-hmmm! Pass the mustard biscuits!

Gabi Rutledge

Paris vs. the fruit bowl...sounds like a bad 50s movie they'd riff on MST3K!!! LOL

Christinaof9

Tom and B’Elanna’s chemistry is so great in this episode, we really see it on full display here. Interesting this was added later, must have directly been writers preparing for what’s coming next. Love the banter, i agree it was innocent but so obviously two people trying to deny feelings lol.

Adina

A while ago, I had found a Voyager Writer's Bible on the Internet, which looks authentic and was from the Elizabeth Janeway days. http://leethomson.myzen.co.uk/.../4_Voy.../Voyager_Bible.pdf It seems like the Tom-B'Elanna relationship potential was there, built into the DNA of the show but then ignored for a long time. The document also implies that Tom would be hesitant to purse a relationship... Would be super interesting to hear from Robbie (from a director/producer perspective) and/or a writer about how writers' Bibles were used (or ignored) on Voyager or are used (or ignored) generally on shows. Did the actors see the Bible too? Directors? (Also, without 'retconning,' might this account for some of the Paris-Torres scenes in Faces or Thershold? I know there were also some weird one-offs between possible Janeway-Paris and Torres-Chakotay relationships at different points which y'all have already spoken about on The Delta Flyers-- some of which I think occurred very early in the series-- and which don't seem to fit what is written here).

Sony

Reckon I'll have them french fried taters. Mmmm hmmm.

Sony

On second thought, some of the poems are spoilers. "A stalker in space" lol

Ramon Medina

LOL!!! Now I know where the whole Fruit Bowl bit came from. I've been a bit confused as to what was going on in the Facebook group. :)

Justin Rhoads

Can you guys start making the podcast daily? I seem to spend a lot more time in the gym when you guys are on. 😂

Karen

Do you mean.... Fruit punch? Don't mind me. I'll show myself out now.

Lisa Minnesma

"I threw up.... in my mouth" and then the video stops. That made me laugh!

Lisa Minnesma

me too haha! I was like, why did they switch! Although...... if this is recorded via zoom, they can switch who's left and who's right!

Lisa Minnesma

Yeah!! I thought that was so interesting to learn! Now that I know Blood Fever wasn't even a concept yet, it makes the flirtatious scenes here very coincidental and fits perfectly! We never would have thought!

Lisa Minnesma

Also, thanks for having Bob Picardo on again!! :D It's always a lot of fun to see cast members pop in to say hi and share their experience!

Lisa Minnesma

I gotta say though, the Paris/Torres scenes definitely looked like flirting! Sorry Garrett! They weren't as direct as the flirting in the episode Real Life but it was definitely flirtatious and at the luau definitely a "Vorik is pursuing B'elanna?!? Oh that'll never work!" look on Tom's face with slight jealousy. Can't wait till Vorik gets his butt kicked soon!

Lisa Minnesma

And I never noticed until now that Tuvok and Kim would be in disagreement saying yes and no two times. And by the end they were in agreement saying no together. Interesting detail if that was on purpose!

Mara

Harry told B'Elanna that would not meet her and Tom as planned. That indicates that the three of them had plans to attend together and Harry contacted her to cancel. Her response was to invite Vorik instead and she seemed unconcerned and uninterested when Tom asked why. Someone cancelling plans and the other person not caring is not a sign of a deep connection. In fact, when contrasted with Tom's reaction of dropping everything to talk to Harry shows that Tom's friendship with Harry is much deeper and stronger than Harry and B'Elanna's friendship.

Patrick M

Yea def flirting a little. The "Yes I am" is definitely Tom flirting..

Moonglade

"Alter Ego" is always a fun episode for the great character moments, the lines, the sunshine, colours and outfits on the holodeck, but also bittersweet because of Morena's lonliness. As a J/Cer I agree 100% - more teasing on the Janeway/Chakotay theme. My God, could they stand any closer?! Heh, those magnetic hips again :D It's okay though, another episode that launched a thousand fan fics.

Taisho Rose

I never knew Robert Picardo directed this episode! (I should really pay more attention to the credits, shouldn't I...) Even though Bob didn't like the script, the way he directed it elevated the material. His directorial style is very elegant, meticulous and intellectual and even the attack-of-the-Holodeck scene which could have been over-the-top and silly came across as genuinely unsettling. I think the only reason B'elanna gave Vorik a chance was because she was trying to avoid admitting any interest in Tom. Both Tom and Harry need to step up their game!!! I never liked the episodes on TNG where certain crewmembers fell in love with holodeck characters. They were always really cringey. I think of this episode as the "Catfish" ep. Online dating was a completely new thing at the time and as there was no social media, pics and video were more difficult to upload and extremely low quality. There were some chat rooms and a lot of forums where people would meet others with similar interests, but it was always a roll of the dice as far as what they were like in person vs. their online persona! Many introverted, reclusive, or socially awkward people feel emboldened by the anonymity of the internet to reinvent themselves. The episode definitely feels inspired by this, especially the ending.

Re: Garrett’s language lesson for this episode, I’ve misunderstood for YEARS that the Mandarin ma ma ma ma was translated, “Mother, see the horse run.” Boy, did I have that wrong. I love the added visuals / hand gestures that explain the inflections, too. Thanks, Garrett, for clarifying my decades-long misunderstanding.

Susanna Jackman

This was a great episode. I love what they ended on ‘I threw up in my mouth’ 🤣🤣🤣 great last line!

Samantha

This might not be a stand out ep, but as a pretty solitary person myself, moments really hit me. The whole discussion about Tuvok's real motivation behind not wearing the lei, him encouraging her to socialize with her people again, and that line 'what about you? Will you always be alone?' and his look at her. I remembered that for years. Naturally solitary people can also get lonely, and when they do they have fewer tools to deal with that. I empathized with Tuvok so much. So poignant.
