Yes!!! But I didn't understand why she didn't just jump in the pool and save him. Unless she couldn't swim either...?

T

do you guys think we'll ever get Voyager remastered to at LEAST HD? even on netflix the quality is so awful you lose so much detail - like in Resolutions it's so pixellated you can barely see the tear rolling down Kate's face! I know a full upscale remaster to 4k would be expensive but even a rescan of the original would be an improvement.

Loretta Lane

You got Angela Lansbury's autograph?! That's rad af.

Monte Plays Games

I would also agree that we need an HD upgrade. Just looking at how much money went into the documentary crowd fund The Voyager HD I hope will be a thing in the near future.

Adele Lara

This episode has always disturbed me. I was a hospice nurse and many patients close to death would tell me that they saw their family waiting for them. They would receive much comfort from the “family” visits. This episode puts a huge clog in this belief and leaves me unsettled.

Rich Gross

Lol! I’m assuming this is Rebecca heckling Robbie in text overlays. Love it! But here’s a bit of your own medicine: You typed that he has “zlitch” copies of the Coda script ;)

Se7enofNein

“I’ve never seen anyone die quite like THAT...” lol

Stephanie G Williams

Oh, I just love this! They really made my shippy little heart so very happy with all their J/C talk. And Rebecca, you made some great little cartoons. I hope they will become stickers, especially the moonlight sail and the scene where Chakotay gives Janeway the rose. 🥰🌹

bakura

Interesting fact, if the episode feels like it was a mix of different ideas that's because it was. The writers had these different ideas for episode's but they felt they didn't work so they just mashed them together.

Andrew Murray

more likely in limbo not *dead*.....?

Andrew Murray

Maybe Janeway's 'wish' was more to do with the fact Torres and Paris didn't exactly start out as 'star members' of the crew - one a marquis, the other in prison and just thought maybe the common ground between them would draw them together.

Andrew Murray

What if "Q" showed up and turned Janeway into a "Q"......and she snaps back into "reality".

Andrew Murray

I liked Chakotay's spiritual side - the vision quest stuff.

Laura Johnson

I love Len Cariou as the alien/Janeway’s father. When I close my eyes I hear Sweeney Todd. What a fantastic musical!!!! I also love thinking about different connections....Len was of course with Angela Lansbury in Sweeney. Then Kate was on Murder, She Wrote with Ms. Lansbury a couple of times. One of those was with the actress who plays Derran Tal on the Harry Kim-centric episode “The Disease”.

Matt

Yes the pictures are back!!!

Mara

My fanfiction heart was bursting during that episode and the piece rose is literally everything ❤️

Nancy Lapierre

So is vulcan poetry like Vogon poetry?

Mike Gu

Loved all the talk about metaphysics! And LOVED Ghost Janeway, Rebecca!

Sony

I wish they would’ve shown the talent show. Janeway dancing the Dying Swan, Harry’s clarinet solo (I remember an episode where he wrote a Clarinet concerto about the starless void of space they were passing through and it sounded nice), Tuvok boring everyone with his long-winded Vulcan poetry and Garrett’s idea to have Tom doing 20th century dances like “The Macarena”. That would be hilarious and you know Neelix would join in. Hey, Macarena!

Sony

“There must be self-defense classes for Starfleet. J and C had no skills to even try to defend themselves” True. But that scene didn’t actually happen, it was part of Janeway’s “death dream” that the alien parasite induced. There was no Vidiian Groundhog’s Day or memorial service; it was all an illusion to break Janeway down so the alien can get her to enter that portal to feed off her consciousness. The crash from the ion storm was real though.

Sony

Even though the funeral didn't actually happen it was very moving. I teared up a little too. Garrett, Roxanne and Kate were great. (you can't spell Garrett without "great")

Sony

You gentlemen always hit the nail on the head with your episode themes. “Trust your instincts, never give up and believe in yourself”. Dead on.

Sony

“The real theme is if you happen be some entity or alien against Janeway you lose. Janeway is always going to outmaneuver you no matter who or what you are.” ~ Garrett Janeway is the Bugs Bunny of Trek. 🐰🥕

Sony

Shout out to Garrett’s mom’s friend who saved the life of 6 year old Garrett. 🌺 🏆🌺

Sony

I give this episode an 8, I like the whole "what if" premise and all the plot twists. The final scene with Len Cariou was chilling. Kate Mulgrew was brilliant and it was nice to see Beltran's Shakespearean acting come through in the "Don't you die on me!" scenes. It's obvious Janeway and Chakotay keep their relationship on the down-low being the top commanding officers. You see it in almost every episode, until Chakotay started dating Seven which didn't make sense.

Sony

Rebecca's cartoons really add to the charisma of this podcast.

Humaira

I am finding it so interesting that with this rewatch the Garatt and Robbie are seeing what we've all seen with the Janeway / Chakotay chemistry.

Mary Burch

I'd love to see Tuvok's reaction to Paris lighting his farts on fire. :D

Dean Makin

Love the Vote 'No' On Daleks t-shirt, Garrett. Sound advice.

Sony

Or since Harry Kim is Korean, he could've danced/ rapped to 21st century K-pop sensation BTS. 🎹🕺🏻

Hannah Swartzel-Rausch

Idk if anyone noticed but Robbie did say Janeway "never gave up, never surrender" which is the LLAP from Galaxy Quest 😂 I thought someone was going to make a joke about thay

Eric Bennett

Season 1 of Voyager had only 15 episodes and the rest of the seasons had 26. A total of 172 episodes. That would mean episode 86 is the halfway point. That means The Killing Game part 1, 18th episode of season 4, would be halfway.

Lisa Minnesma

To the admiral fan who was asking if the crew saw something different between Paris/Torres and if there was a betting pool. No one in the crew finds out until early season 4 :) But when they do, it's a good episode! (I'm trying not to spoil it!) =)

Lisa Minnesma

Just curious. Why is there a language lesson in each video? It doesn't really have anything to do with the show. :)

Eric Bennett

I think it is just something fun that Garrett does with the fans. It is only shared with Patreon members.

Beth G

Just to say Robbie’s sound is so much better! I used to have some issues with Garrett’s mic being louder and I had to turn my volume up to hear Robbie but now it’s perfect! Thank you!

Sony

Strange. I never had that problem and I have very good hearing and get annoyed when I have to constantly turn the volume up and down. Never had to on a single podcast. Well, except that time they had that one guest star from "Faces" who was yelling into the mic but he was a fun guest star. 🎤🤣🎭

Maggie Metz

"Mr Paris, your ability to partake in illogical and vulgar activities is overwhelming" 🤣

Maggie Metz

Love your work guys! Coda was a thought provoking and emotional episode. Certainly brought tears to my eyes.

Moonglade

Awww, another episode that launched a few thousand Janeway/Chakotay fan fics :D Kate and Robert did us proud with this episode, knocking it out of the park portraying the depth of feeling between the characters. I love the cute J/C drawings, Rebecca - fabulous! FYI Garrett and Robbie, the rose that Chakotay brings Janeway at the end is known as a Peace rose - pale yellow petals with pale pink top edges - and in my opinion, a nod to the Angry Warrior speech in the 'Resolutions' episode where Chakotay tells Janeway that he loves her by saying that she's brought him peace. See - it's all there in the sub-text as well, it's not just in the sledgehammer J/C scenes. I love this episode, I always cry in the purple berries moment/scene. My one critique would be, when Janeway and Chakotay are in the caves and a Vidiian shoots Chakotay - kick-ass Captain Janeway would never have stopped firing at the Vidiian's to rush over to see that Chakotay was okay, she'd have taken them out first. I know it was to support the 'next death' scenario, but still. G.I. Janeway from 'Macrocosm' would have finished the job first :)

Taisho Rose

That makes so much sense. The part where Janeway actually dies and the time loop is broken has a whole different feel to it. I wonder if they were trying to avoid being compared to Groundhog Day. Every TV show and cartoon seemed to have a time loop episode after that movie came out.

Taisho Rose

In my opinion this episode is the shippiest Janeway/Chakotay episode of all, even more so than Resolutions. Why? Because Resolutions doesn't really go anywhere, and this takes us on an emotional rollercoaster that ends with Janeway inviting Chakotay to "celebrate being alive" with her on a romantic boat ride. We all know how they're gonna celebrate... ;) The Dying Swan is a very famous ballet solo done to The Swan from The Carnival of Animals suite by Camille Saint-Saens. It was considered a bridge between traditional and modern dance when it was first performed and the dance is said to encompass "the everlasting struggle in life and all that is mortal." In this episode there are a lot of little nods to the way we sort of gloss over death in our everyday lives and make light of it until we are forced to confront that it is an inevitable part of life. Janeway played the dying swan, but surely in a comedic way. I imagine Janeway wanted to be the example for her crew and show that she was willing to get up on stage and not take herself too seriously. It makes her more relatable and probably motivated others to perform in theTalent show. It's apparent that Chakotay really liked seeing that less rigid side of Janeway, and their whole Talent Night conversation in the shuttle feels as if they are still basking in the afterglow of the previous evening's festivities. Later, when Chakotay is trying to resuscitate Janeway the joke about the apple isn't quite so funny any more. I must commend Robert Beltran for his intense performance during both resuscitation scenes. The raw emotion he displays makes me tear up every time. Those must have been really hard for him and Kate Mulgrew to have to film multiple takes of. The fact the funeral is all sort of a hallucination still doesn't take away the impact of B'elanna and Harry's speeches. I know there wasn't time, but I would've liked a Tom Paris speech about how Janeway gave him a second chance and maybe some reminiscing about what Janeway was like when she was a young, geeky science officer...Tom's father was her captain, after all, so they must've crossed paths a few times. Nobody else could've portrayed the Demon Daddy of Starfleet quite like Len Cariou! Janeway's one-liner was priceless. The only thing that keeps me from rating it as a top tier episode is how disjointed both halves of the story are. It felt like someone had an idea for a time loop episode that was like a more dramatic version of Groundhog Day, but it didn't have enough gravitas, so they tacked on the idea where Janeway literally confronts death. Despite that, it's still one of my favorite episodes because of all the metaphysical elements and the feels!

Barbara MacDonald

Just have to say... vindicated. If Robbie and Garrett see it, I didn't imagine it all those years ago! 25 years and I haven't gotten over J/C... it's just so nice to have such excellent company taking stock of the evidence as well. Yeah, those two were seriously in love. Also, the cartoons are PRICELESS! Kudos.

That Crazy Crippled Chick (Cara Liebowitz)

There was a short story in the Voyager anthology (or one of them, can't remember if there was more than one) about the talent show that I really enjoyed!

Kimberlee Ostler-Naong

This one had me cracking up!!🤣 And yes we all were confused as to why Janeway and Chakotay didn't get together. I wish we would have had some sort of conflict from trying to resist those feelings like we saw in DS9 with Odo and Kira. Just wait until Endgame when Chakotay and Seven get together. It comes out of nowhere and they had no chemistry at all. Lol seven and Harry should have been a thing! Makes way more sense.

Cass

I'm glad the Tom and Harry talking photos came back at the end. So much funnier, especially when they dance around a bit, lol! :)

Sarah Packard

I died laughing at the photo skit/improv. But in seriousness, the part with B’Elanna’s speech that Garrett highlighted was very moving for me. I’m about to accept a bigger position with a big company, so those lines really spoke to me.

Kayla LaFrance

Yes, I am 2 months behind the times.... life and work in particular has been insanely busy and i fell behind. ;-) The nerd in me wanted to leave a little note about Attitude control. That is not necessarily a miss spoken word by Beltran. Attitude control is something we use with spacecraft. In fact, just a little over a week ago we had an inadvertent issue with the Nauka thrusters, new Russian module for the ISS, and it pushed the ISS off the expected attitude until we could correct it. Spacecraft Attitude essentially is how we describe the orientation of a spacecraft versus a reference frame. Ie, Are you orbiting the moon with your spacecraft’s Belly facing the moon’s surface? Are you orbiting with your belly facing away from it? In Space and in the air you have to worry about your pitch, yaw, and roll when dealing with orientation. If you lose your attitude control while crash landing, you may end up landing upside down, or on its side… vr the landing skids…. While in space, no attitude control could leave you in a tumble along multiple axes, much like a potato shaped asteroid. :-)

Samantha

Favorite Beltran performance of the show

Bronwen Duffield

The shuttle banter was great. Janeway's line about how he must have some talents that could entertain... priceless.

Julie Waid

There was - I think the only anthology is "Distant Shores". I enjoyed the talent show story as well.

Danie

Coda is actually one of my favorite episodes. It's so beautifully shot and acted. It was really nice to see Robert get to really show some depth to his acting. Of course I ugly cried during the funeral scene. I don't think I've ever not teared up whenever Kate cries 😭 and yes, this episode is major J/C vibes
