The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Blood Fever. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week they have guest interviews with Roxann Dawson and writer Lisa Klink to get their insight into this popular episode.

So great to see Roxann! Blood Fever is a great episode! Although it was completely out of left field to throw them together it worked lol it does make Tuvok's line to Tom about needing to "help B'Elanna" that much more funny lol I thought they could have had a moment between Chakotay and Tom sort of deciding who would help her lol

SnazzyO

I thought Tom’s growling was sort of adorable - it was a ‘when in Rome…’ kind of response, which works with Tom being ‘adventurous’

SnazzyO

1) I agree that this was not out of left field. Tom Paris had his eye on B’Elanna for a while. I think his brashness juxtaposition with his sensitivity in Faces/Threshold attracted her to him. She definitely wanted someone who would bite back. In a Klingon way. 2) I think Harry decided, after Futures End, that he would eventually shift from Ops to the Command Track and was therefore studying for that role. He clearly was in the Engineering curriculum (gold shirt) at the Academy, but a taste of the big chair made him realize he was Captain material. So, in my head canon, Harry is off studying for permanent rotation as senior officer on the bridge (which we saw him do in later season).

Mine has a problem not rewinding past a certain point. I usually just restart and either watch it again or do something else until the part I’m waiting for comes back on. I’m watching through Roku most of the time. Don’t know who or what is to blame but I’m thinking the film itself is off.

Amit J

Tom's growth from "walking hormone" to a monogamous relationship with someone who challenges him was a testament to both the writing and RDM's portrayal of the character. As others have said, this was telegraphed beautifully in previous episodes but not excessively. A great balance that made the coupling and it's evolution throughout the show very satisfying to watch.

Dee McGee

Rebecca: "Dr. Paris going to work. "

Sonia Singh

I’m watching! This is so exciting. 😃 I love this episode now, but I remember it being very uncomfortable to watch the first time since I was a teenager watching it with my whole family in the room!

K

Roxann Dawson and Lisa Klink!!! Ahhh! So excited!

Andrew Murray

The way I remember this one Tom answered the challenge of Vorik for being Bel'anna's 'mate' (which was one way to purge the 'blood fever')

Andrew Murray

Lesson learned: Don't try to strangle a Klingon!

Rich Gross

So great to hear Lisa Klink explain why Tom and B’Elanna are such a good fit. I totally agree but couldn’t put the reasons into words like she did.

Julie Holden

Watching right now, and I just woke up my poor sweet husband by laughing *so much* at Robbie's reactions — especially "This isn't about the GUN. It's about SEX...*blink blink*" — all while Rebecca can be heard stifling her laughter as she videos him.... 🤣🤣🤣

Carmen Puente

Now I am wondering if there was a broken clavicle in season 6......

Mary Burch

"She bit me! Is that what you do when you like someone?" Only if you're Klingon. ;)

Dustin Snyder

I didn't feel like the Tom & B'Elanna relationship was out of left field at all. I kinda felt like there were hints here and there over the years. At least the possibility of it. Maybe it was the good chemistry thing? Never really felt that way with Harry and B'Elanna.

Andrew Murray

So basically, the director is a collaborator...and should welcome appropriate input from the cast, not a dictator with only what he/she says goes and nothing else.

Cory (1701)

Maybe Film/Tv are different, I was also surprised based on what I’ve understood from seeing film directors in special features and interviews etc

Lyrian McGregor

I can’t understand saying Tom/B’Elanna came out of left field. When I watch the preceding episodes I think they’re rife with chemistry between Tom and B’Elanna - sideways glances, raise eyebrows, smirking, playful teasing, trading barbs. That’s how their characters would flirt. Tom literally asked her out. He made the first move so it’s logical that the next was hers to make (granted this is an extreme one but it tracks emotionally). I didn’t feel any chemistry between Harry and B’Elanna (sorry Garrett!). Them working together a lot doesn’t imply anything romantic. It’s fascinating how we can watch the same thing and come to different conclusions! :-) (Harry saw plenty of action over the course of the show as the cute young guy, so he certainly didn’t miss out on anything!)

Mister T

So happy to see Roxann. She was the special guest i've been waiting to see. Hope to see more of her in future podcast

Sony

Wow, this is awkward B’Elanna has the pon farr Paris is the cure ~ RDM Vorik begins his pon farr journey It’s Torres he’s chosen to marry Although he pleads his case She bites Paris’s face Fever purged by a duel filled with fury
 ~GW

Sony

I would leave the room pretending to get something whenever a sex scene came on with my family. lol

Matt

Yes, Finally! B'Elanna is on the Delta Flyers! How exciting! Just get her a starfleet uniform and some makeup to add the klingon cranial ridges and she could drop right back onto Voyager and not miss a beat.

Sony

Lisa Klink did her homework on Vulcans. I imagine she was a fan of the episode Amok Time where Spock underwent pon farr. The “adjacent pon farr” (as Robbie puts it) was a neat and comical idea. The theme of consent when someone's judgement is impaired was well done. Overall a good Trek comedy introducing T+B. I give it an 8.5. Alexander was great as a Vulcan, he really sold it well. And of course, Roxanne and Robbie hit it out of the park. Andrew Robinson did a great job directing, it shows that he’s dedicated to the franchise. He even wrote a novel about his DS9 character Garek to get “total closure”. Garek was my favorite on DS9, I once rented Dirty Harry to see more of his acting. Andrew was so convincing as a serial killer that he received death threats after the film's release.

Sony

So cool that Johnny Ethan was an advanced climber, sax player and hang glided with Tuvok. Please keep digressing, this is gold.

Sony

The wall of rock collapsed in the tunnel, separating Tom and B'Elanna from the rest of the group. Or at least that's how I saw it. The rock guy that B'Elanna fought probably amscrayed before the wall came down. They should've shown it falling though, or at least had a louder sound effect of it coming down with a cloud of dust.

Sony

Tuvok, T'Pel, T'Pol, T'Pau, T'Pera, T'Pring, T'Les, T'Lara, T'Rina, Talok, Tok, TikTok ..so many Vulcan names start with T.

Kathleen Scherrman

My take on "Where's Harry" -- He was practicing his clarinet on his "day off".

Karen Chuplis

I actually feel like they did a decent job setting up where Tom and B'elanna were headed. Tom definitely asked her out at least a couple of times on screen and there was a real feel to me in Alter Ego that Tom was knocked out of the way with Vorik there. Kind of like that high school party where you go as friends with the idea you might get somewhere later. I honestly feel like while they didn't telegraph it like a neon sign but there were a lot of small subtle things that pointed at an attraction. IMO.

Joseph Zodda

I have always liked this episode. Vorik is a character I don't remember what happens to eventually. My memory makes me think he just disappears and we don't see him again after a few more appearances. Great show guys! It was wonderful to hear from Roxann. The alien that was holding the rifle in the cave. That gun he was holding sure looks like a remodeled federation phaser rifle. 😊 Didn't look like they changed it much lol

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

I now love "Blood Fever" even more after all the comments from Garrett, Robbie, Lisa and Roxann. I know how busy Roxann is and is going to be with the new Series I read about over the weekend where she is directing and producing. I hope you can have her on again. I think besides Frakes... Robbie and Roxann have had stellar careers in directing. Thanks everyone.

Luz R

Every1 has pretty much said everything I would say but I wanted to join in the love fest for Blood Fever and P/T. Thank you for getting Lisa and Roxann. Hope to see more of them.

Hannah Swartzel-Rausch

I loved this! One of my 10/10 episodes, along with Threshold (I'll fight abt this 🤣)

Lauren Lerner

This is the episode I’ve been waiting for since y’all first announced this podcast!!

Sony

Tom probably got jealous when he saw B'Elanna with other guys (off screen) but in Alter Ego he most likely didn't see Vorik (being a Vulcan) as a threat. He saw how aloof Torres was when Vorik got her a table with a view. That explains his "whatever" look as they walk away.

Steven Hawley

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before but the Voyager writers Bible actually does mention a possible romance between Tom and B'Elanna. It's a rather long sentence for both characters but the basic gist is that Tom is drawn to B'Elanna and she "has [her] designs" on him.

Stephanie Baker

BF is a 11/10 for me. Thank you to Lisa Klink and all involved in making this episode. I think Lisa Klink 'owns' the Tom & Belanna relationship and I gratefully send her more virtual flowers 💐.

Jeffra

I was 17 when I saw this episode and then I crushed so hard on P/T that I printed out season photo where your heads are near each other so I could draw a heart around them, then put it on the cover of my Calculus binder. Nerd and proud. :) I think I saw the flirting between B’Elanna and Tom building over season 3 and was looking forward to some development but never expected it to happen so fast as this episode burst into it. They seemed so complementary in their brokenness, and that was beautiful. I also appreciated what Roxanne said about their characters having to work to make their relationship work, both as individuals and as a couple. That was good for my young mind to see modeled. Thanks all!

Sarah Thompson

My locker was full of Voyager photos. 😀 I’ve always appreciated how these two compliment each other and how they push each other to grow.

Pamela Blotnicky

I've been waiting since the Delta Flyers started for the Blood Fever podcast, and you did not disappoint! It was so, so great to see Roxann. She was hilarious and smart and brought great energy and insight. And it's always a pleasure to see Lisa, the true P/T queen. I think it's hilarious that Garrett and Robbie haven't noticed all of the blatant flirting between Tom and B'Elanna earlier in the season. It's all over the place! Must be a guy thing... Anyway, the feelings that came up in Blood Fever were definitely not out of left field. I'm hopeful that going forward, after this episode and after hearing from Lisa Klink, the podcast will fully embrace the awesomeness that is P/T. This relationship means a whole lot to many devoted fans.

Sony

Just finished the last half of this video. Loved seeing Roxann, she's just too good to be true. And it was nice to see Lisa Klink, she wrote a Voyager Masterpiece. Thanks for having them on. Delta Flyers is the best podcast ever!

Holly Smith

WTF?! Why isn’t Garrett wearing black?!

Stephanie

They could have had a good sub story going on where Harry thought he was playing the long game even though B"Elanna had friend zoned him from the start, and then couldn't believe it when his best buddy who he thought was the 3rd wheel swooped in and got the girl. A tale as old as time.

sab ewell

I love Roxann so much and she did not disappoint. Thank you all so much for this one and making it special. It's a special episode for many! I loved hearing from Lisa and Roxann about P/T. They really nailed it. I love P/T for the reasons they mentioned. They are my forever favorite couple and I am excited for the rest of their journey with the podcast!

sab ewell

As for Harry and B'Elanna I have said before I LOVE their friendship. It's one of my favorite friendships from the show. It's rare for a show to make a guy girl platonic relationship without one or both having romantic feelings at some point and they did a great job with the Harry and B'Elanna friendship and I'm glad they never went there with them. Harry was a true friend to her when she needed one and a work colleague cause they were both nerds in gold. I love that the show had Harry and B'Elanna keep their friendship even when she and Tom became a couple. Tom and Harry kept their separate friendship and then of course we had the trio friendship which again I just really liked their dynamic together. So Garrett might have wanted more between B'Elanna and Harry, I'm very glad their wasn't because it would have ruined what I love about them and their friendship. Also B'Elanna needed Tom and we would have missed out on some amazing scenes that could have only happened with those two as a couple. :)

Karen Chuplis

I always thought they seemed pretty flirty. Well, especially on Tom's side. But B'elanna seemed too particularly annoyed with him to be indifferent.

Kimberlee Ostler-Naong

Lol loved this one! Nice to hear from Lisa Klink and Roxanne Dawson. Roxanne is really a talented actress and you can see she puts allot of thought and work into her performance. I am going to have to look up her directing work! Its super interesting to see the different writing, camera people and directing styles.

bakura

i find this episode interesting because the doctor guesses that this is vorik's first pon farr which would imply that pon farr comes on at a certain point like puberty, ok i can see that it would make sense that vulcans only start mating when it's age appropriate, thing is if that's the case then why in star trek 3 the search for spock did the rapidly aging rejuvenated body of spock start to go through pon farr at the age of 7. also i was just reading on memory alpha that originally it was tuvok that was supposed to go through the pon farr but tim russ didn't like that as it was established he had a wife so that would mean adultery. personally i think his wife might have understood given the situation, i mean let's be real vulcans die from the pon farr if not handled, vulcans may suppress there emotions but there not completely heartless. the 2 quickest option's are have sex or kill someone and i think his wife would know he couldn't live with himself if he killed someone through this.

Justin Rhoads

In relation to the end of the podcast conversation, I can think of literally no other acceptable reason for a guy for example kissing another persons wife. Obviously this is the film industry… but I was curious… does this cause a lot of anxiety or social challenges? How do actors, or spouses, in general adapt to this? Is it always this cordial? I totally get that at the end of the day its just acting and there is a story to be told. But I feel like these kind of encounters could be challenging to reprogram yourself mentally! I am just curious ! =)

Julie Miller

Human beings are not monogamous by nature. That assumption is an artificial construct your culture drilled into you and everyone doesn't share it. For many people this is not a big deal in real life. It certainly isn't for actors, who act out all sorts of things they don't actually feel, including murder. Being able to do that and make it believable is the job description.

Utopia Science Fiction

Thank you for another wonderful podcast episode (They're all wonderful)! It was really awesome to be able to hear both Lisa Klink and Roxanne Dawson's views on this episode. I'm glad you were able to have both of them join you!

Jason Fenemore

How freaking awesome was it to see Roxanne Dawson on the Podcast?! Great Podcast as usual everyone!!

Eric Bennett

Does anyone else have issues with the video stopping at certain points and not restarting? I can scroll back and start it again but then it stops at the same point.

Christinaof9

You guys crack me up, this is the first time I feel like you are both totally clueless and not seeing any of the fans reality LOL! (Said with lots of love haha) 😉 It was obvious to me as a fan, even as a preteen at the time, that Tom and B’Elanna had SO much chemistry and when this episode came about it was like an “oh finally” moment that the fans have been waiting for… The chemistry and the little fighting scenes that had build over so many episodes finally came to some fruition in this episode and it was very exciting as a fan! But definitely not the first we had seen of the seeds being planted of them as a couple. I remember waiting in anticipation with every episode hoping for another argument or clash between these two...we knew exactly what was happening.

Kevin H

Great episode guys. And it was awesome to hear from Lisa Klink AND Roxann Dawson! Really loved hearing everyone’s thoughts regarding the episode.

Eric Bennett

I finally got to listen (and watch!) the entire podcast episode. It is great hearing from Lisa and Roxann. The special guests always add a lot. Hopefully they come back again (especially when Roxann's has her directorial debut with the Voyager episode Riddles).

Lisa Minnesma

I do remember Vorik being in Day of Honor and then in an episode in season 5 I think. But that's all I remember

Lisa Minnesma

I wanted to comment before the Blood Fever episode week is over. I absolutely love this episode! Blood Fever is one of my favourites! Not only for the official beginnings of the Paris/Torres relationship but also learning more about B'Elanna - especially from Roxann herself! Thank you so much for the great interview with Lisa Klink and her explaining things from a writer's room perspective and having Roxann's perspective!!! She's one of my favourites!

Mareina

Garrett's loser in the W&L section was Vorik. Me when I heard this: "Alas, poor Vorik..." I'll see myself out.

Rena Shephard

Great podcast!! And thank you so much to Roxann and Lisa for being there! Awesome!!

Cass

Their reactions about Tom/B'Elanna being out of the blue surprise me as well. While I agree that there had only been hints at a potential relationship, those hints/breadcrumbs are definitely present prior to this episode (he asked her out in Swarm). I wouldn't have minded seeing more of those offscreen looks and flirtations though! Even the first season had some nice character interactions and chemistry, even if those moments were not romantically charged. Both characters and actors have a lot of energy and that comes across whenever they share scenes together. I really agreed with Lisa Klink's comments about why the writers thought these two characters would work and be interesting together. This season had given them some small, specifically flirty moments, then used this episode to propel the characters forward. As for Harry, I think all the early shared work scenes just established him as a reliable work friend, who had a girlfriend back home. I know Harry gets his 'game' shamed, but I took it more as him not being ready to give up on his relationship with Libby, at least in the early seasons.

Miki Tracey

Garret, I can probably explain why they didn't consider Kim & Torres ship beyond the first season. Harry is mild. He's not prone to explosive yelling....ever I think. He is well rounded, and all that good stuff. Torres is explosive and angry with a chip the size of Mc Kinley on her shoulder. She punches or yells first and asks questions later. Which means the only way it'd work is if he had that 'are you angry with me or the situation?' type of response when she yelled. Which means Torres would simply get shut down rather than amped up in any fight. He'd basically be Keiko to Torres's O'Brian. Don't even get me started on the Uniform Code of Military Justice which would crucify Torres for that sort of thing. Harry absolutely deserved better in the human relationship department, but I just don't think it would have been as fun for you or the fans if they'd followed up on a Kim/Torres ship.

LeeAnne Forsythe

Ha!! Wait till Robbie and Garrett see Tom/B’Elanna’s relationship in Scientific Method, gonna be gooood

TheDeltaFlyers

Thank you for your post explaining why the Kim Torres coupling wouldn’t be advisable. A very compelling viewpoint:) ~~Garrett

Charity Ponton

Sorry Garrett.... Harry and B'Elanna were like a brother and sister. Them ending up together would have been weird in my eyes

Pınar Schwarz

I remember watching this in the 90's. The romance between Paris and Torres was surely very romantic and beautiful, well done. But the very hightlight of that episode is the big final moment, when they discover that skeleton of the borg. I remember shouting "yeesss!!" in front of the TV I was soo happy that finally, finally some cool borg scenes were about to come up.

Eliza Thomas

Love this episode and this podcast. So good to see Roxann and Lisa, too. You guys all made me smile and laugh today.

Sarah Packard

I haven’t watched this yet, but I’m so excited Roxann will be a guest!

Knickers AKA Nicki T

OMG I've been waiting for this episode for sooooo long, it might be my favorite, it's definitely my favorite thus far and in my top 5... I've been desperately trying to catch up! The only problem with the episode... I missed Harry! Thank you Roxanne for coming on the podcast, you are so lovely! Loved to hear everyone's thoughts also Lisa Klink, everyone asked to the right questions, this podcast was so rewarding. Sigh. Back to my binge...

Megan Moore

This episode is a favorite of mine. I give this a 9!

Megan Moore

I did not find the saliva gross. And the growling Was sexy. Robbie you and Roxann did an amazing job in these scenes. I’m sure it isn’t always easy to film these sort of intimate scenes. It baffles me that they keep mentioning the relationship was out of left field and there was no indication previously. There were several moments of flirting and there was even a moment where Tom asks her out. And even though she turns him down she was kind of flirty when she did it. So yes it was the first time they were vocal about it but there were definitely subtle flirting. As opposed to Harry and B’elana where I always thought their relationship was just friendship. They seemed to just be close friends that care for each other as friends. IMO I never saw anything more between the characters.

LT Turner Jr

What a great episode and so love when special guests come on. Lisa is always great and so nice to see and hear from Roxann!! :)

Rachelle H

Harry and B'elana would have been good the first 2 seasons and then Tom and B'elana later on and it would have been good to see if the friendship could withstand along with true love. Then Harry get to be with Seven for a bit too. Roxann is so lovely and just gorgeous. This is my favorite interview so far!
