as far as the vegetarian thing, Riker tells someone that earth/federation quit eating meat years ago. so unless they're eating a fresh kill, replicator meat is just molecules and not make from real food

Hi Garrett and Robbie, just to let you know that all Voyager episodes were 44-46 minutes long, not 43. That must have been before they cut episode times short to fit in more commercials.

Jen V

Interesting, never thought of it that way, makes sense. 🤔

Tacy Muzzy

This is actually one of my favorite episodes! To echo other comments above, I thought the moral issues in this episode were very thought-provoking. It's one of my favorite things about Star Trek.

Continuing my Voyager Rewatch Binge w/ Delta Flyers commentary: 1) On Unity. Robbie - you are way to hard on yourself. This was a good episode. The four ‘jump scares’ associated with the Borg were exactly the kind of adrenaline infusion that I think the audience needed. We’re entering Borg home territory (that’s clear after Unity). And the stakes are higher. That instant feeling of terror was very well conveyed with the combo of visual/action/music/dialog: - The rapid fire orders to battle stations when the Borg cube was first scene; I REMEMBER my audible ‘Holy Sh*t!’ reaction 25 years ago — we just ‘leveled up’ - Dead drone 1st appearance - B’Elana’s ‘Shut it down!’ And the Borg drone’s arm was wildly searching - The urgency as Voyager swung around to get away from the cube: ‘Get us out of here!’ No action? There was just the right amount of terror/action interlaced with normal Voyager pacing - the collective memory of the Star Trek fandom was reactivated by this episode: mission accomplished. Garrett - very nice ‘action hero’ look this episode. 2) Neekrit expanse - I’ve always felt like after ‘Fair Trade’ we left the first Act of the Voyager story behind. We flew the edge of the Neelix’ virtual map and started the next Act. Only complaint: we need a one line explainer that implied the expanse came in patches (to justify why some episodes had the purple nebula effect and others did not. Post Unity we were are free now free of the expanse. 3) On J/C: I LIKED the way she circled him in the briefing room. And it does cement ‘Captain first.’

PJ Miller

I'm late to the Delta Flyers party. But since I am, I can confirm that zom-borgs are truly creepy from season 3 of Picard.

Mark Scheuern

I liked this episode more than you guys did. I thought that it presented some interesting ideas, and I enjoyed the story. Yeah, some issues like the Borg hand sex, but it was fun.

K

I remember enjoying this episode and loving the concept of sharing consciousness in order to heal. Had no idea this was a Robbie episode! Thanks for calling out those lines that we cringe at now, btw. I’m glad to know it lands wrong now to y’all too, even if the norms of popular culture and what we were accustomed to were different then. (Also in the “no colds since March 2020” club and it’s a revelation!)

bakura

Chakotay being connected to the collective becomes relevant again in scorpion. Specifically the end of scorpion part 2.

bakura

As a doctor who fan I've always wondered if the borg were inspired by the cybermen from doctor who, because if you look into them while executed differently there king of simular characters.

Andrew Murray

What if instead of Riley, that character had been Anika Hansen.....would that have been a better introduction to Seven of Nine (rather than in (I think....) "Scorpion")?

Andrew Murray

They could have just got Torres to hot-wire the borg cube, head for the nearest Trans-warp conduit and be home in 5 minutes. Janeway-of-Borg: Investigation is futile.

Andrew Murray

Riley means well I think, after all she's trying to bring order to chaos - the Borg's modus operandi!

Andrew Murray

That thing when you activate an agent that doesn't know they're an agent - Order 66?

Andrew Murray

This ep kind of supports later borg stories like where they encounter Seven's 'unimatrix' members that want to sever their neural link and live as individuals (as short as their lives from that point will be).

David Turner

Yes as also a Dr who fan I’ve also wondered for years though I think it’s just a coincidence.

David Turner

I had to laugh as a britisher when Robbie said about working at the co-op which here is a supermarket chain 😂

Matt

LOL, we need to help Robbie with his picture positioning during the final segment of Voyager chat (as I affectionately refer to it as). Which, by way, is one of things I look forward to every episode!

Craig Main

The ep came out just 3 months after First Contact so had a lot to live up to. The improved make-up is certainly more effective than the TNG years.

Rob Salvaggio

If you want to read on the books and sort of the end of janeway's story you need to read Star trekVoyager: Full Circle, Star Trek Voyager: Before Dishonor, and then the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy. The Voyager books lead in to the Destiny series and Star Trek: Destiny merge stories and characters from Star Trek Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Next Gen, and Enterprise together in one, cohesive story. Even both versions of Dax are in the books. It also ends with a destabilized Alpha/Beta quadrant that leads to a lot of more interesting stories for everyone

Debra Crockett

I was thinking that after the guys were done with Voyager episodes, they could take on episodes of other ST that were directed by Robbie and other Voyager actors. Like in Enterprise - both Robbie and Roxanne did a number of those.

G. B.

Yes! Move on to Enterprise, or TNG, when done with Voyager. I have yet to watch Enterprise, but I randomly caught the season 3 episode titled Twilight last week on TV. The episode was fantastic. I later read that Robbie directed it. So… I began my Enterprise journey this past weekend. I am looking forward to an episode a night. It should be fun!

Sony

The Borg Collective Chakotay, linked and kissed Janeway will be pissed ~RDM Chakotay, Kaplan heed the call of distress No one to help, attacked by ex-Borg no less An ensign extinct, Commander is linked Riley and company use one to suppress ~ GW

Sony

“Creepy, awkward Borg collective sex thing” ~ Robbie “He’s making out with his own hand!” ~ Garrett 🤣

Sony

🎵“Chakotay, I just met a boy named Chakotay” ~ Garrett Riley should've sang that. They could've made that whole episode a musical parody of West Side Story.

Sony

“wE nEeD yOuR hELp, ChAkOtAy” *the Borg sleeper agent awakens* 🕴🏻

Sony

Even though I skipped this episode many times, now that I'm rewatching it, it does have a lot of good moments and messages. The Borg jump scares, the zombie Borg autopsy with Torres's reaction, the reference to the infamous Battle of Wolf 359 (which took place in DS9 and TNG), Chakotay's neurolink that will come in handy in another episode and the analogies to cults and communism. Janeway deciding that imposing a choice onto thousands of people without consent is wrong and that what looks good on the surface can be dangerous if given power (Theoretical Communism vs Every historical/ present example of Communism). That's Star Trek for you, there's always more to the story than meets the eye. 🔎

Kelly Bee (CaptainKathryn)

Oh gosh, Robbie, I had no idea you directed "Someone to Watch Over Me"! That episode is my absolute favorite of Voyager 💙

Irene Artho

From now on I will say or think "borgify" instead of assimilate, so much better :) One thing I was wondering about with this episode; when Riley and Chakotay make out while they still feel each other through the connection - does that mean the rest of the mini collective was enjoying a good time as well? :D

Ericka Birkenstein

The One Where Chakotay Cheats On Janeway (in my heart)

Karen Chuplis

I do think what this episode helps with for later is that they have had an opportunity to closely study a drone and it makes The Doctor’s abilities de-borgifying Seven more solidly based. Doc is probably someone that should have been called in on Picard. In my head canon after the finale he for sure spends some time on Coppellia.

Sony

Just like Q, how will they explain his aging on Picard?

Alisa King

I really loved hearing Robbie go into detail about his experience directing this episode. While I definitely noticed the issues they both addressed, I thought this was a great episode regardless. I remember clearly that this episode (and blood fever) was a turning point for me. Having introduced the Borg was REALLY exciting and I was completely hooked after this, even more so than I was already.

James G. Jones

Anyone notice Lisa Klink name has been added to producers credits starting last week? Just thought it was interesting

Sony

Yeah, go Lisa Klink! 🥂 (notice the pun in the emoji? lol)

Barbara MacDonald

So I'm struggling here with something that I think needs to be said about the writing of this episode because I try pretty hard not to leave a trail of complaints behind me on the internet. Lapses in emotional continuity are general phenomena that I've seen repeated in many TV series; Unity just so happens to provide a glow in the dark example. When a serialized drama sells out genuine, deep emotion for a cheap upset, like a fling perhaps for sex-appeal, it's a slap in the face to all involved. In this case, I feel bad for Robert Beltran in particular because he backed up the emotional dump truck and let loose in Coda just a few short episodes ago to show us how Chakotay feels about Janeway. Signing him up for Borg sex at the drop of a hat cheapens that emotional labor for the audience, for Chakotay, and though I can't presume to speak for him, I am guessing for Beltran as well. What message are we, the audience, supposed to take from this? Chakotay's tears are meaningless if another lady shows up? Emotional continuity is critical for long running shows and the temptation to show off a neat idea (sure, exploring the collective outside the collective is a SUPER cool idea...) doesn't, to my mind, justify dismissing what's come before thereby whiplashing characters, audience and likely actors.

Taisho Rose

So... is collective Borg sex a... Borgy?

Hannah Swartzel-Rausch

I was born during the run of Voyager (97) and I only know one person my age who's had chicken pox. Yay vaccines! Also, I've never heard "happy hunting ground" before and I had to ask my mom what it meant. I guess that's progress?

Sony

Word. But not everyone is perfect, even Chakotay. When he was linked to the hive mind, he wasn't just viewing others thoughts as a spectator he was literally experiencing them (that's how he was used to activate the cube). Obviously, Janeway was jealous when she said "You got to know her very well", but the thing is, they weren't in a solid relationship; it was on the downlow because of professionalism. Maybe it was an "open relationship" even though Janeway did not look happy. lol Also, Janeway had a few flings too. (Counterpoint, Spirit Folk, Workforce, Prime Factors)

Sony

Yeah, Robbie nailed it with the "fall of the Soviet Union" metaphor.

Rich Gross

I actually like this episode more than most seem to. I guess I just appreciate the ones that are a bit different, and this qualifies. One thing about the “Borg sex”: I didn’t see that stroking and kissing of their own hands as the act itself. I took that as “foreplay”, introducing the idea that they were going to have sex while being able to feel each other’s sensations as well as their own. I have always thought that was quite an erotic idea to present in Star Trek, but maybe I’m seeing it differently than it was intended.

Marcus Vanderzonbrouwer

Lol I absolutely loved the skit between Tom and Harry at the end of the credits. It made my day. Please have more of these in future episodes.

Daniel de Rooy

Robbie, I have always enjoyed this episode. I was legitimately surprised to see you be so harsh on your direction of it. With the scene with Chakotay and Janeway, I especially liked the close-ups of Kate and Robert. But maybe you're right about the blocking and movement. I actually have always liked this much more than sacred ground (Unity was like an 8 in my mind, with sacred ground being a 5 or 6, or even lower). That's not to insult your directing or the idea of Sacred Ground. I think all trek episodes have worthwhile and interesting ideas. Every trek story is of a higher intellectual caliber concept-wise. But being a spiritually-minded person, I felt it very much being written from a very cold, scientific point of view. However, since your recap of it, my opinion of it has increased dramatically. I like how you highlighted the moral of the episode being "embracing that we don't know everything - that not everything is explainable." I always enjoyed Unity's horror qualities and felt that was a perfect re-introduction to this villain we know. Maybe it worked out great that you didn't do so much homework on the borg. A more natural introduction rather than a forced, over the top one is what I will always prefer. AND from season 3 onwards I have always felt that voyager's music and score got so much better. Episodes like The Thaw, Projections, Meld, Remember with Roxanne, The Chute with you guys and Unity were the first ones that stuck out to me for having a much more lively and overall, better, music. This continued more and more as the series went on. Not sure if anyone can echo those sentiments?

Daniel de Rooy

Same! I never got that reference either and I was born 96'. I watched voyager growing up and I never realized that was a phrase people say..

Stephanie Baker

I liked the cult analogy that was discussed during the recap. Riley acts like she has seen the light and wants to share it with everyone. EBC Ex-Borg Cult.

Moonglade

LOL! Love the skit at the end on Janeway and Chakotay, guys! Just imagining a jealous, ticked-off 'Dying Swan' now, flapping and hissing :D I always enjoy this episode because of the moral dilemma on The Borg escapees and the question on how long the 'good' ex-borg will hold true to their ideals. I also enjoy it for the acting - it always amazes me how actors meet other actors for the first time (likely on set) and can portray deep connections like this. I thought Robert B and the actress who played Riley knocked it out of the park in portraying their connection and kudos to Robert B for also showing that worry/distrust at the same time. And, of course, Robert B and Kate M's acting in the conference room and in sickbay spoke volumes - more about what wasn't said than what was said in my opinion. The subtext from Janeway and Chakotay is always pure gold and as a J/Cer I always see Janeway's jealousy here. I think Robbie's being to hard on himself on the Directing, I thought he did a great job and I enjoyed what I see as a change in 'the formula' trek scene layouts and shot angles :D

Len

I thought the direction on this was really good

ST Fan CB

ummmm...much like Kirk asked "what does god need with a starship?", I would say "where in the hell did Riley's wig come from?" I mean come on now...

Megan Moore

I saw it the same as you. And I found it sexy and sensual. I didn’t think it was weird at all.

Megan Moore

Robbie I think you’re being too hard on yourself. This episode is very good and I thought the directing was too. Also side note, I enjoyed the foreplay scene. I thought it was very sensual and sweet.
