The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Darkling. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Darkling:
The Doctor adopts some impressive character traits from historical figures into his Starfleet database, but inadvertently adopts several abnormal traits as well.

I remember Ethan and Rene when they were on Benson and I was so happy when they were on DS9 and Voyager.

SnazzyO

I wish the motivation for the darkling personality (besides live) was more cohesive. Between that and the physical changes, the character seemed too arch.

PJ Miller

Sea Ranch is the best!!!!!!!

Dee McGee

I belive he was in med school or pre-med before deciding to pursue acting.

Andrew Murray

It was more a Jekyll and Hyde sort of thing. Unpredictable personality traits rise, even though through good intentions, the Doc wanted to use the best positive qualities of famous people but didn't consider their dark sides.

Andrew Murray

3 hours of raw recording for the podcast? your editors do a good job to cut it to 1.5 hrs.

Andrew Murray

There a bit of Anakin turning to the dark side in this....the Doc deciding the "dark side" is better etc etc. Slaughtered holograms.....and so forth except no one's "tempting" him except the sub-routines he's created and the monster that has resulted.

Andrew Murray

With Torres one minute she wants to kick the Doc into the next millennium, and the next ---- whatever. Back to normality especially given she warned him this whole thing could happen, with the conflicting subroutines.

Andrew Murray

I can't believe it was only 8 years between the wrap of Voyager (S7 2001) and release of JJ Abram's "Star Trek" (2008).

Andrew Murray

I think the easiest way to portray the Darkling version of the Doctor, was for the EMH to revert to its original programming and overplay the "Zimmerman" persona a little more, leaning into the "dark side".

Sony

lol “Darkling” doesn’t sound ominous to me. It sounds like duckling + dark which makes me think of a cute, fluffy black duckling.

Sony

The episode should've been called "The Strange Case of the Doctor and Hologram Hyde". I agree with Robbie and Garrett, the premise and teleplay was good but the episode as a whole was forgettable.

Sony

I laughed when Kes said "everyone seems to be treating me like I'm still a child. I'm three years old now." even though in Ocampa years that makes her around 30.

Sony

Kes thinks she’s in love The Doc enriched his program Things got pretty weird ~ RD McNeill Zahir romances young Kes and makes her swoon New subroutines turn Doc into a goon He knocks out Zahir, hyposprays Engineer Fixed by Torres his program can now resume ~G Wang

Sony

The ensign in the turbolift looked like a young Lucille Ball. It would've been funny if the malfunctioning Doctor blurted out "Lucy, you've got some 'splaining to do!".

Craig Drebit

wowzers. And only 3 years after the wrap of Enterprise. It seemed like longer!

Craig Drebit

Totally agree with Garrett about how poor a choice it was to portray Evil Doc the way they did - with a permanent skulking brown, beady eyes, disheveled hair and 5 o'clock shadow. It was way too over to top and hard to believe that nobody noticed! And he changes his clothes?? :) Now, Evil Doc appears again in Equinox and is done in a much better way!

Sony

Better than a room full of slaughtered youngsters.

Sony

Maybe the transporters rematerialize people so that their bodies are vertically oriented.

Karen Chuplis

have gone from meh to shiver if they had let the actor just layer the evil in instead of forcing it. And Bob could have done that for sure.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

I'll admit this episode is in my bottom 10 of episodes of "Voyager" I just could not wrap my head around that ending. It would seem to me the Captain would have a few choice words for The Doctor.

Sony

RIght? And what happened between Kes and Zahir? Oh who cares.. I'll forget about this episode again anyway. lol

Barbara Sabo

I agree that the Robert Picardo should have been allowed to play the “evil doc” without all the added features. It would have been so much better overall.

James G. Jones

When Garrett was talking about skiing for some reason, it made me think of when they put in a ski resort here in Arkansas in the late 1970's right next to Dogpatch USA. It didn't last long, the huge snow blower machines couldn't operate in weather above 28°, so skiers had very few days to ski. I live about hour from the abandoned ski resort and Dogpatch USA. The owner of Bass Pro shops bought Dogpatch USA in 2020 and restoring it next few years to open back up again. If anyone knows what Dogpatch was...lol

Maggie Metz

Have to say this episode took the evil factor just a little over the top. OMG the Doctors beady eyes! I would have liked to see the Doctors evil side dialled down to a simmer. Not on my list of favourite episodes - no offence to Robert Picardo of course 😉.

Justin Rhoads

I hate to be that guy but I think in regards to the JJ movie with the transporter… if indeed the concept of motion were still in play after transport (and the grav plating wasn’t sci-fi’ed off into being less gravity on the transport pad, then I think all they would have done was bring the ground closer to them and they would have splat at terminal velocity all over the transporter pad. 😳

Rich Gross

Sea Ranch is awesome! It’s on the Northern California coast, about an hour north of Bodega Bay, about 10 minutes south of a little town called Gualala (which I generally call “Gualalalala”). Many of the houses there can be rented out for a weekend or whatever. I’ve rented houses there a few times.

Sony

Maybe when the transporters are doing their matter-to-energy thing they also convert kinetic energy (someone falling) to someone at rest?

Lisa Minnesma

which kind of makes her relationship with Neelix in season 1 and 2 kind of creepy if she was "still a child"

Stephanie Baker

I like the discussions at the beginning of the recap when R & G discuss their overall rating of the show. I agree with Garrett that the Evil Dr was not scarier due to his physical characteristics. He scared me the most with his behavior, like when he paralyzed Belanna.

Navin Kiser

I'm no expert, but I liked the acting, even if a little over-the-top, of Robert Picardo. It was creepy and not in a bad way. In my mind I always imagined that it makes sense that adding personality traits of historical figures may be over-the-top and possibly based on exaggerated records. Since they won't have the exact personality on record the computer maybe builts the extreme version of mentioned traits. Then the mix of different personalities just results in this almost-comic-like person, but making sense, as he is a holographic person. (No idea if my thoughts make sense, blame it on the language barrier) ;-)

Kassandra

Great Episode as always ;) I found especially the questions at the end pretty interesting. I wonder weather if Bob Picardo could have acted as a medical advisor. Didn't he study some medical subject before getting into acting?

T'Pau first shows up in TOS in the episode "Amok Time" as a very older relative of Spock's. Kirk notes that she is only person to turn down a seat on the Federation council. She then is on Enterprise as noted so she is much younger. She was never on TNG or DS9. Maybe the issues with Kes as brought up by the Doctor is a case of art reflecting life regarding the issues of the actress playing Kes, Jennifer Lien, that ultimately result in her leaving the show. The real life issues as described by several of the show runners in multiple interviews are the exact same issues as enumerated by the Doctor in the sickbay scene.

Rachael Etka

Bob also played a doctor on the Golden Girls when Dorothy has to have foot surgery!
