The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is The Gift. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

The Gift: Kes bestows an amazing gift on the crew before transforming into a higher form of life; the Doctor removes Seven of Nine's Borg technology.

Yeah, I'm not buying that reason either. Kes and Nelix also weren't Starfleet and they had nice outfits that weren't exploitive. They wanted her in a cat suit so that's what they did.

Garrett: "When you say TNA, everyone understands what that means!" Me: "What in the world does that stand for?? Tommy Never Asked?!"

Jeremiah Brown

OMG GUYS! I have been talking about wanting to do something on stage with Trek actors! I was thinking of a live episode type of thing. I have ideas!

Beth

Borg *Alcove I think for regeneration

Marian Bieniek

I remember being devastated when Jennifer Lien left the show. I warmed to Seven of Nine eventually, but what a rough spot Jeri Ryan was put in!

Chris Denny

I was hoping you two would have had Jennifer on to talk about the episode

TheDeltaFlyers

Hi Chris, as many fans know, Jennifer has cut ties with Trek and her fellow cast mates since Voyager was on the air. We did attempt to reach her for an interview, but we were unsuccessful.

Christopher Collins

This is the first time really hearing a lot about the director Anson Williams. I feel like Anson Williams did a great job on the comedy and drama in Real Life with the Doctor and never made the connection that this episode was directed by the same director. I was interested in knowing that.

Christopher Collins

This was insightful hearing your perspectives on this episode. There is so much about this I never caught before. I have seen this episode so many times but never realized it in the actors performances such as Robert Picardo's performance or Jennifer's performance or how talented Jeri Ryan was. This was an interesting episode to balance a character leaving while introducing a new character. Like in the other Star Trek series we never saw this done both in the same few episodes. DS9 introduced characters and left characters like Worf, Jadzia or Ezri in their own episodes rather than have both occur at the same time. I felt like unlike Tasha Yar they left Kes as a character on a high note whereas Tasha Yar as a character in Skin of Evil was a terrible way to leave the character. In the case of Jadzia Dax I think her death was done better than Tasha Yar. What I did like about Tasha Yar was not so much her first season but what they did to develop her character after Dennis left the show and especially after Yesterday's Enterprise. I just feel bad that Jennifer as an actress being on Star Trek did not help her out to get jobs once she left the show unlike Dennis Crosby or Terry Farrell Nimoy.

In addition to your insights about Jen leaving the show and how sad it was for everyone (and I'm impressed at her professionalism, coming back for just two episodes in season three after she was let go), I also want to thank you for your insights about Jeri Ryan's costume and how they really played up her sex appeal. Garrett, I disagree that they had to put her in a skin-tight costume because she was recovering from whatever the Borg did to her; I think it's the other way around - they wrote in that that's why she had to wear the suit so that they had an excuse to put her in a skin-tight costume. Sigh. At the time, a young student at a women's college, I was pretty pissed about that. I'm still pretty angry about it, tbh. There was no need for that. Jeri is an attractive woman and if she was there to get the male demographic to watch the show (again, sigh) she would have attracted them even in a Starfleet uniform. It's like Troi in TNG; she always wore these silly tight dresses for whatever reason and then Capt Jericho in season 6 told her to wear a uniform and suddenly it was like, oh, she still looks fantastic even in a boring old Starfleet uniform. And as for Seven not being Starfleet so she shouldn't wear a uniform...well, the Maquis all got uniforms didn't they? Anyway, I appreciate all the insider information y'all are willing to impart. Every episode is a lot of fun. Thanks guys!

I belive the actual gift of that episode "the gift" was Jeri Ryan. ST producers wanted to put a blonde sexy female spockalike for selling purposes and didn't realize that they were gifted with a remarkable actress instead.

I am a new subscriber and am still waaaay back in last year's podcast episodes. However, I had a question, and maybe you all who have been on here for the whole year know the answer because it's been asked before......but, on the third episode podcast, Garrett and Robbie talk about having multiple directors. I was wondering why? Is this a common thing in television? Thank you!

DezandHer3Dogs

I was literally thinking the same thing!! They decided first they were going to put Jeri in a skin tight suit and then second, they came up with a reason. And what's sad is that I'm not opposed to women showing off skin. It's that this was not a feminist moment. This was dudes deciding that, as Robbie said, sex sells.

Jef Lemaire

Surprised nobody (here or on the podcast) mentioned the hilarious exchange between Seven and Harry about life in Galactic Cluster 3. On of my favourite bit of dialogue.

Elias Nordling

Seven's parents are retconned quite a bit later on.

Jill Florio

I absolutely would buy Meditations With Tuvok. Make it so.

Horatio Moradi

"She's not Starfleet, you can't put her in a Starfleet uniform". Laughs in Maquis.
