Good episode, weird timing. Seems like it belonged after ‘The Gift’. Kind of threw me off. Loved Chakotay’s struggle at the end as he showed sincere hatred, even though he knew it was irrational.

SnazzyO

Adding: Tom said ‘I should have gone with him’ - which, in my opinion, was an option they didn’t take in planning the survey. He was driven by guilt.

Coal Musterm

Nemesis is my favorite Voyager episode.

Dee McGee

That limerick tho!

ST Fan CB

Uh, other planets have moons that reflect the light of the sun in the system. Why could'nt there be moon light?

Peggy

Thank you!!

I'm very surprised Robbie and Garrett had issues with that town fight scene. For voyager, there definitely are fight scenes that crop up quite often that don't look realistic, or are a bit awkward, or just could be done better. However, this has never been one of them for me personally. Does anyone else agree/disagree? Aside from the hilarious, hesitant "motherless beast" outburst from Beltran, the scene to me always seemed great - very realistic, the soldiers looked/felt dangerous and capable, and the lines between Penno and Karya felt very emotional.

Tiffiny Lawrie

I laughed at the bit about there's no acting class for "how to look like you're lifting heavy things" 😆 it's so true and it always drives me nuts when a performer lifts a large bag like it's nothing, or someone is gesturing with a coffee cup that's meant to have liquid but clearly doesn't 🤦🏻‍♀️😆

Stephanie Baker

Regarding the language and the Universal Translator, perhaps the simulation has its own UT and we are hearing the simulation translation not Starfleet.

Stephanie Baker

I get ‘pulled out’ during this fight scene because everyone, town folk and attackers, have big 90’s hair band hair. Besides that, this scene is part of the simulation and achieves its purpose of manipulating Chakotay.

Andrew Murray

If a convention crowd did go nuts all you need is Jeri Ryan to bring order to chaos!

Andrew Murray

Is this not the one where Chakotay is 'brainwashed' into fighting for one side or the other, and turns out to be the "wrong" side he's fighting for, because Voyager shows up and helps the "other" side (or requests their help to locate Chakotay.

Jennifer Z

Alright, I'll admit it. I too own a Star Trek Voyager commemorative plate. It was supposed to be a Christmas gag gift from my best friend, but I low-key love the hell out of it. It says something cheesy on it like "The Bonds of Friendship" or whatever. Ha!

Justin Rhoads

It’s funny because the rifle looks like a dressed down Chinese QBZ rifle. And the other races guns look like a dressed down AK. It’s funny how often they don’t go out of their way to make weapons not be real modern earth firearms. My personal favorite was the original Star Wars where stormtroopers were clearly running around with German mg-42s with lasers coming out of them instead. 😂

Justin Rhoads

Ridiculously random but what actually always annoys me in shows being trained with firearms, is when they never aim down the sights. In fact I think Robert Beltran is the only one that does so. But the notion of precision shooting whilst hip firing like in that one scene is a little off for me. But overall all it was one of my favorite episodes!

Great podcast this week! As for this episode, it was one of my favorites, surely better than a 7. I’d say a 9 for me. I really enjoyed the first 23 minutes, which were all Chakotay on the sphere. Making Voyager and the main crew secondary added impact to the viewing experience. I was quite okay with not seeing the main cast throughout. The storytelling was engaging and the director’s choice to keep the viewer at ground level during the clashes made me feel like I was part of the scene. The dialogue was fantastic.

Luz R

I love that answer Garrett lol

JR Poole

[comment on the first few minutes] If y'all haven't seen Sid City - Siddig is continuing DS9 stories via script read-through. He brought in Cirroc, Nana, Armin, and Andrew. So, you guys start a twitter, use your current audio set up and read a few scripts over zoom. Later posters, stills and animations can blossom. You two have great chemistry. Make it grow - make it so.

Rich Gross

My guess is that the phaser rifles were made more durable because they expected them to be used in more active scenes and didn’t want to keep remaking them.

Rich Gross

I’ll buy that. And to take it a step further, that would explain the uncommon word usage, as well as going along with the idea that the appearance of the simulated “good guys” might be customized to be relatable to the one(s) being indoctrinated.

Rich Gross

I think it makes total sense that the appearance of the simulated “good guys” would be customized to appear relatable. I don’t think that both sides are the same race, however. If that were the case, a large point of the indoctrination and the idea that the other side looks like “beasts” would be lost. The point would also be lost of the ambassador having the same appearance.

Yvette Kuhl

I just watched Sid City's Alone Together episodes, so so awesome to see Siddig, Robinson etc reading as their characters, like my heart is just bubbled over.

Irene Artho

I really like this episode, the lesson behind it is really good. I noticed one weird thing: the Vori leader at the start says "Now close your glimpses, defenders. And dream of your sisters and mothers." What..?! This sounds wrong to me. Maybe "dream of your family" or "dream of your wives" but "sisters and mothers"?

Cathy Darvin-Redders

Robbie and Garrett talked about how the overboard concern that Tom had for Chakotay being out of place. In the next episode, Revulsion, Tom and B’elanna say they hadn’t talked since the love confession in the previous episode. I think Tom was trying to impress B’elanna because he wasn’t sure what was going on for sure with her. I also think he feels he needs to make a good impression on Chakotay so he approves of Tom’s potential relationship with B’elanna.

s.oneill2020

Not my favourite Episode, the Story itself is boring imho, but the Lesson behind that is really good, especially for german people like me. As I'be seen the Languageoptions on Screen, I got curious: Do Actors get intrested in the sound of their Voices in other languages? I know OV and german and some of them sound so mch diffrent in German.

Christopher Collins

I am surprised how insightful this episode was. I was not expecting Robert Duncan McNeil to remember so much about the sets for this jungle set for an episode he was not in much. I did not know the jungle was shot at the Warner Brothers set.

Christopher Collins

I think Robert Duncan McNeil did great on his poem limerick this week. I think the limerick won over the haiku this week.

Christopher Collins

I was curious what would be the procedure or security measures while working on Voyager if you were shooting on a different studios set? Like would you have rules about not visiting anything but what you needed to to avoid taking stuff or stealing ideas or getting pictures of something in production currently in the works out from a different studio?

Christopher Collins

I never realized that Jeri Ryan was absent from this episode till Robert Duncan McNeil brought that up. I guess it was a good thing for Jeri Ryan since the last few episodes were so heavily utilizing her character as Seven of Nine. Jeri Ryan probably needed a little break from everything in the last few episodes.

Christopher Collins

I honestly felt like what this episode was missing was more backstory to Chakotay’s past incorporated into story or into the plot of this episode. I was expecting to hear more about how he sided with these people based upon what the Cardassians did to Chakotay’s people or hear Chakotay talk about Marquis tactics and apply them in an attack to gain the support of the villagers or military.

Olivia Peel

I really like this episode, and I think it suits Chakotay’s character particularly well. Garrett and Robbie mentioned how Chakotay seems especially susceptible to falling in with cults, but that totally tracks with what we know about him. He left Starfleet for the Maquis, and then he was ride or die for Janeway within, like, 24 hours of meeting her. Chakotay is an absolute sucker for what he perceives to be a scrappy underdog with a just cause. Not only that, but I found Chakotay’s despair at the end of the episode to be an absolute gut punch. Way back in “Resolutions” he has that monologue where he talks about how he “only found satisfaction when he was in battle” and “longed for peace within himself”. And I felt like the emotional crux of this episode was Chakotay losing his grip on the inner peace that he’s found since joining Voyager.

David Udris

I like how you plug your photos that you use to sign autographs on at the end😅

B obrien

Not a fan of this episode

B obrien

i think it was shown out of sequence because in the next episode Tom says to Torres it’s been three days we need to talk. Also when this podcast ends in a few years rdmc and wang can switch over to doing captain proton..

Ruinenlust

Loved this episode and loved your poetry

Mary Burch

I wonder if this episode was filmed with Season 3? I say that because Janeway has long hair in this episode, but she has short hair in the last few episodes.

Andrew Orlowicz

I know why Harry was staring so intensely at Tom in that scene. Because he knew his chances with B’Ellana were gone now that her and Tom are officially shipped!

Lisa Minnesma

It’s funny how they said it was early (morning) at the beginning of the video lol. Because looking at the video thumbnail I was thinking... man, they look kind of groggy! That explains it lol

Ernán Ó Domhnaill

Regarding some of the props used during the show. The rifles used by the Vori is essentially a Mini-14 dressed up in an after market kit made by a company called Muzzelite. During the 90's these kits were very popular in film and television production because it gave working prop guns a futuristic look. On top of that the Mini-14 was well regarded by many prop departments because it rarely jammed during filming.

Ernán Ó Domhnaill

Forgot to mention Robert Beltran has some experience with working prop firearms from working on an Episode of Miami Vice in the late 1980's!

Moonglade

I'm a big fan of the Chakotay character and enjoyed this episode very much. The alien dialogue/speech mode took some getting used to but it was really cleverly done and like Robbie says, almost Shakespearean. Re: a male buddy for Chakotay - fan fiction writers have him being best buddies with Lt. Ayala (Tarik Ergin) who was Maquis. Fanlore goes with them being highly secret ex black-ops or Ranger operatives back when Chakotay was still in Starfleet, with Chakotay being team leader and Ayala being his 2nd in Command. In some stories they come aboard Voyager from Chakotay's Maquis raider ship with a trunk full of black-ops weapons and gadgets - unbeknownst by Janeway or Tuvok -which they use when needed on crew rescue missions. Their methods are ruthless and focused and most definitely not Starfleet, but they get the job done. When Janeway finds out and realises that Chakotay's secret past is so dark , she's NOT happy and it makes for some great tension between J and C. This is something I would have loved to see on the show. Chakotay did need more male interaction imo.

Antje Strauch

Oh that sounds interesting! Is there a special term to search for to find these kind of fanfics?

Moonglade

Hi, Antje :) There probably is, but it's old fanfic from a closed website and likely wouldn't come up in a search. I have a link on the wayback machine I can send you though. I'll DM you on Twitter.

Eric Bennett

Too bad they couldn't get Beltran on the podcast. His take, since he was in 90% of the episode, would have been great to hear.

Jeffra

If you ever watched Road to Avonlea, a spin off series to Anne of Green Gables, then you would immediately recognize Michael Mahonen. Well, I did anyway. He played a jovial love interest of a main character on that show. A very talented actor.

Heidi Lebrón

When suitcases are put into taxi cab trunks like they weigh as much as a feather! Or when someone walks in with two to-go coffee cups balanced on top of each other in one hand!

Heidi Lebrón

My daughter's name is Felicity, and I picked the name when Road to Avonlea first aired. When I had her and it was time to name her, my husband could pick between the two names I had picked for a girl, back when I was a kid: Cecily and Felicity!

Jenny

That works in-universe, but it wasn't the point of the script or direction - Nemesis and Day of Honor were switched for airing dates; Nemesis was finalized and produced before Day of Honor.

Rosemary Kelty

This is such a great episode for Robert Beltran, who always shines in episodes devoted to his character as well as in every episode!! He is fabulous in the last scene where even though he knows that he was conditioned to hate one species, he still can’t let go of those beliefs. Who knows if he will ever be fully rehabilitated? Great episode overall.

Kendra-rose Playfoot

So was this Garrett's first PSF. Lol we got you we have all been there.

ST Fan CB

This episode left me feeling unsatisfied. Usually we find out who the good and bad guys are by the end of the episode. Although the practice of capturing unlucky travelers and brainwashing them to fight is wrong on many levels, we don't know who shot the shuttle down or if the other side also practices brainwashing. That I suppose is the point of the episode. I dont buy the whole Chakotay thing where he always looks for a peaceful solution. Why then is a Starfleet officer in the Marquis using violence as an end justifies the means thing? Does not wash with me. This episode and the TNG Darmok are not even remotely alike other than one Starfleet person is on the planet. Other than that, not similar at all.

Bronson Turnquist

In retrospect this was interesting to hear the experienced director Robby talk about using an airsoft gun for safety purposes. The very next month there was a shooting on a set in New Mexico. As RDM put it: "Good to not have real weapons on set...."

Denise Gilbertson

I love the Captain Proton episodes - they were so fun; I grew up watching those types of shows in reruns and loved it! One of my favorite Voyager episodes is Bride of Chaotica!

Sarah L.

In reference to Captain Proton and the many forms of Star Trek, I loved the Voyager: Elite Force video game when it came out back in the day- not for the campaign itself but for the little things included with the game content. There was a virtual Voyager you could explore with collectibles hidden throughout (including a Seven collector plate) and you could access the holodeck and enter a number of Captain Proton adventures. There was even a video game within the video game called "Borg Slayer."
